Love the opening drive down Wheelabout past the schoolhouse! We have vacationed at Lake Hope every year for 25 years and the trip to Moonville Tunnel was always a highlight for my 3 sons and their friends. Now 23, 20 and 17 they now go on their own, taking new friends and retelling all the stories you've mentioned here. I have a beautiful picture of me and the boys walking the creek trail in the fall with our reflections in the water. It goes up in our living room every fall. Fantastic job! Every second of your video I recall so many memories..... Thank you.

I shall! About 2 years ago we went and I took the boys and friends through the flooded out path with tons of overgrowth,.. Didn't look like anyone had used it. It was pitch black and we got to Tunnel and there were several groups there! Turns out bridge is finished and you can drive to the tunnel!... Boys have EVP devices, spirit box and infra red camera. Too many people then so we went back months later. Rain, thick mist, no moon..... Really creepy.... And,.. They heard walking, something brushed against one of them and they came running back to truck! Not the bravest ghost hunters.,.. I have great stories of cabin 7... Had great footage after several nights of heavy breathing at 3:15am.. Set up camera.. At exactly 3:15am two orbs fly by... Camera goes in and out of focus, fades to black and comes on just as my friend and his wife come running out of their room and my son is also startled by heavy breathing in their faces for second night in a row. Unfortunately, my friend erased video fearing an attachment or other consequences.,... Years later my sons got "demon" on EVP same time same cabin.

Yeah, I'm needing to get back down there again. The only bridge that was in when I was last down there was the one in Moonville over Raccoon Creek. Haven't seen any of the new ones.

I live in Vinton county, maybe 20minutes from Zaleski..be here numerous times and everytime it's something different, there is also the cemetery up the hill, we've gotten great EVP and pictures from there..great documentary!! there was plenty of death surrounding this small town, alot of the original families are still well know names in VC..

Nicely done. A quick note on the signaling. As per 1949 and 1984 track charts. There was a signal 1 mile west of Moonville that in railroad terms would have been a intermediate. It would have governed eastbounds through to the Absolute at Mineral. There was a signal that was 1 mile east of the tunnel that governed westbounds. Prior to the 1980's upgrade it would have governed to the absolute at Hope Siding west of Moonville. If you know where too look there are still signal bases. They are square with bolts in them. You can still find power boxes too. Another interesting note and several railroaders that I have heard say the August 1st 1985 downgrading was a complete surprise with little to no notice. These signals could not have been used to signal for ghosts. As the circuit needs something heavy like a train to interrupt the circuit or a broken rail. Before CTC the line was APB signaling. A poor mans version of CTC where eastbound trains governed in priority unless a hotter west bound was coming.

Yes, on the webpage I had up on my personal site, which is currently offline, I went into a bit more detail about the signals. Was the signal east of the tunnel between the tunnel and the first bridge east of the tunnel or was it on east? I was looking like crazy last fall when I was down there for anything left along the right of way, but I've only seen the old line poles.

I'm currently scouring the area east and west. I know from charts there was one a mile west and one a mile east. I have found a old rr box about a half mile west. The signal bases should still be there somewhere in a mile away. I think the westward one would have been closer to the 1938 wreck maybe a bit further west. I'd have to look at the 1984 charts again to see which road crossing it would have been close too. I did find a old cable to what I believe went to some crane west of the tunnel laying over the embankment in the weeds. Some thick brush that way and probably better going in the fall. But this is the best documentary I have seen on Moonville. The only instances I have had was a photo in 2007 where someone pointed out they saw a face. I had shot a photo through the tunnel toward the eastern end and it was at the right. If I recall pretty clear too. Then 5 years later I made a night trip and decided to use railroad lingo. Towards the eastern end I saw a spec of red light. About the only way I can describe it was a far away rr signal. About the same area of the face. But I digress, this is a good documentary and the first I have saw that looks for confirmation. As you obviously know the place is packed with stories.

I stop at the three crossings to the west to get some pics, went up to the cemetery, and then got a video of the trail from Moonville to where the bridge to the east of the tunnel had been. Also had one incident happen in the fourth video when other people showed up.

I did, enjoyed them a lot. I went up to that cemetery not too long ago for the first time in a while. Nice to know that it is kept up with. I was up there the first time in 2009 and I could have sworn the road was worse than when I went up it two weeks ago.

Interesting video. I've been to the Moonville tunnel back in October of 2014 with a few friends. I remember while I was there I could have sworn I saw a woman in white walking in the woods, but every time I turned to look the figure would disappear. When walking through the tunnel on our way back to the truck, one of my friends said she was starting to feel sick then right after she said that she jolted forward and claimed something big and hard hit her in the back. After that and having to walk through the creek we went to Athens for lunch. While there I looked through some of the pictures I took at the tunnel. In one of them I can swear I saw what looked to be a figure standing on the other side of the tunnel next to a woman with another group that was there. In another there was what looked to be a lit lantern inside the tunnel. After that we left and headed north for home.

Sounds like you had an interesting trip down there too. In the five trips down there that I've made, each has been different. I love going down there. Between the scenery, the history, and the ghost hunting, it's always a good trip for me.

Yep, went to it on my 2013 trip. Unfortunately, I didn't take a light with me and didn't get all the way through. I keep meaning to get back, but the last two times I've been down there, I'll be on my way home and think about it well past the turn.

When I first went down there in 2012, conditions were just right that while in the tunnel I could hear the sound of vehicles on the road. The crunching of the tires on the dirt/gravel road would echo through the tunnel, and at times it would resemble the sound of a rapidly chugging steam locomotive.

LOVE the music. Overall great job and from a railroader, you're spot on with the line's history. Big Chessie fan and sadly the line was torn up a few years before I moved to Ohio. For those that aren't aware - in late 2016 the long anticipated Moonville Rail Trail became a reality with the installation of bridges where it crosses Raccoon Creek multiple places west of the tunnel (some are actually reused rail flat cars). Probably my favorite feature of the trail are the highway crossbuck signs that mark where the right of way crosses Hope-Moonville Rd. They are a nice nod to what the trail had been and for a second give you the feeling that a hotshot Chessie freight to St. Louis might emerge around the bend. :)

Basically it was on the west side of the tunnel. The station was just east of where the road crosses what is now the trail. From what I have heard, there used to be an inn on the hill above the tunnel, but I think that was as far east as the town went with probably a few houses on the west side of the road.

also back then it was popular to take old headstones when a new house was built, the moonville cemetery is larger than the handful of headstones there now.

Yeah, if you check out the videos from my trip down there on October 19th, the posts at the edge of the parking area at the cemetery have been moved back. Looking near the edge of what used to be the parking area, we found a couple of what appear to be headstones poking through the dirt.

The land is part of the Zaleski State Forest, owned by the state of Ohio.

Dunno when you were there last, but here are some updates: the bridge over Raccoon Creek has been in place for a few years, and now the rest of the bridges between Moonville and King's Station are in place. I was there in May of 2021 and they were working on them, so I assume they're open for hikers now. They also had bridges put in for construction equipment, down near the water line. I was able to drive over those with my Jeep, which was pretty awesome. I guessing those are gone now. I plan on going back to the area yet again this fall.

I love your video on Moonville. I investigated there a couple weeks ago using an EMF and spirit box. I spoke with 2 different spirits to find that both were killed on the tracks. I do believe that there are spirits there.

I was there back in 1996 me and a buddy of mine we crossed the creek and walked all the to the other end of tunnel and there was an alter made out of a flat sandstone rock and it had dried blood on it in the center or a pentagram drawed out in the gravel there with burnt out candles at each point freaked me out I said to my buddy let's get out of here and as we turned to head the other way and leave for just started pouring in from the other end of tunnel and filled the tunnel up before we could get out of there

Don't need permission. It's in the Zaleski State Forest. They do have a curfew from 11PM to 6AM the following morning per the Ohio DNR website.

Moonville is something unique. You won't want to leave! Plus with the rail trail effort finally taking shape, bridges are starting to go up (the railroad removed them years ago) allowing easier access than there had been. Eventually the rail trail will connect Zaleski area to Grosvener (west side of Athens). A second tunnel at King's Hollow is also on that line.

Hay mate cool video now have have been sitting here watching this video and i here the brething as well but i have also seen there there is some kind of coloured lights there in the dark like the red blue and white lights like they use to use for the trains as well but then if you watch the wall on the left of the screen it keeps changing but then if you watch the graund there was something that had gone from the left of screen to the right but i'm not sure what it was.

There are supposed to be some foundations around, but they're all overgrown now, and with abandoned mine shafts in the area, it's best to stick to the trails.

There are a couple of buildings to the east of Moonville, technically in Ingham Station. There's a shack that's still standing, a collapsed barn, and the ruins of a house that burned down.

@@RustBeltRailfan Ingham, actually. I have a PDF of a topographic map of the area from 1904, and that's what it's labeled. Sadly, those buildings have all been removed. I was there last fall and they were gone. 😞

I assume they took them all out, and some parks employee is using the siding to cover the walls of his man cave. Going to the area this weekend, so I may take a closer look.

@@RustBeltRailfan there was an abandoned house just north of the rail trail. If that's the one, I honestly don't remember if it was there or not. I'm guessing if it's not been demolished yet, it will be soon, but if it's not right along the trail, it's possible it might still be there. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you.

I'm confused is the brakeman ghost and the headless conductor ghost the same ghost or r they 2 different ghosts??

The headless conductor was one of the early stories I heard when researching Moonville. However, in all of my research, I have yet to hear a name of the supposed murdered conductor, when or where the murder supposedly happened, or even who the engineer was that supposedly murdered the conductor. There was a horror novel written about this supposed story, but it was fiction exploiting the stories surrounding the Moonville area. The accidents and deaths that I list in my documentary are all verified by newspaper articles and have dates, names, etc. I honestly don't believe a conductor was ever actually murdered on that route. Likewise, the story of a plague supposedly hitting the town and another story of the bridge over Raccoon Creek getting washed out that have popped up on the web from time to time. In all my research, there has never been any facts to back up those stories.

The breathing sound I heard was actually heard when I played back the video at home. I didn't hear it when I was in the tunnel. I have heard what sounded like a steam engine on my first trip down there, but it was the echoing of the sound of cars passing on the dirt/stone road across the river.

@@chatanugadotorg as far as i remember there was no signal back then we had no radio's we had order boards about a mile out from each direction we had order boards so the train would be informed of an order it was my job being the youngest on the bridge gang to walk and set the board up and at the end of the day i walked out and knock it down i walked through the tunnel everyday and through Zaleski State Forest talk about kinda spooky one time i got to the board early so i laid down to catch a nap i suddenly felt strange i looked up and there was a fox staring at me about 10 yards away i didn't do that anymore lol
