Nice purchase. Always nice to finally score the one you've wanted. Sheffield steel was once a standard. Might take a hard stone and smooth the edges.

I have some lovely engineering squares from moore & Wright. Very finely made tools that are square 😊

I have also got the same set from eBay. It may be a batch thing but my one is very rough and I returned it immediately. The second set came still very rough so gave up. I have since got both the Starrett and Mitutoyo. They are all significantly better in finish although they costs substantially dearer, no regrets.

Lovely square. The problem with the cheapo combination squares is the subject of an article in "The Home Shop Machinist" about a year ago. The culprit is usually the half-cylindrical nut that slides in the groove. In cheap squares, this nut is garbage (unless you are very lucky) and your square is unsquare. Good enough for woodwork, but hardly good for layout work. I long ago bought a good machinist's square. Made in India but supposedly BS-I can't-remember-what standard, 1:10000 square. I treat it like the crown jewels, and use it as my standard calibrator for my cheapos. The article I cited shows how you can improve your cheapo by making a new nut. But a combination square is a compromise between convenience and accuracy. At its best it will not match a really good machinist's square. Thanks for posting.

M & W are excellent tools. I have had my combi' set for more years than I care to remember. It still works great and is still as accurate as these tools can be. The roughness will reduce as you use it. I have a couple of spare scales/rulers with different graduations that I have picked up over the years to compliment the set. thx for sharing. regards from the UK

i was looking at a friend's new starrett on thurday and it had the same scratchy slide action. a thin slip stone applied to the groovea and the screw hook might ease it a bit. i used a goodly lot of moore and wright tools when i lived in australia and found then quite good kit. don't see a lot of it over here though.

My Starrett combination square set has worked very smoothly and accurately for the last 15 years. I hope the quality hasn't gone down. Too many darn MBAs now just want to get cheap and get that bonus pay.

Nothing quite like opening a new tool that just arrived. In my case I just acquired a 24 inch Starrett combination square kit from my dad's estate. A real treasure both because of the brand and size but because it was his. I would hate to see what the price is new. Over the years I acquired Starrett 6, 12 and 16 in. combination squares on ebay. That was back in the day before I was retired. No more big purchases now.

@samrodian9194 жыл бұрын
f preston if it were it would not have the chief inspectors card in there if it were genuine. I'm not sure Moore and Wright would do that anyway. They would just replace the defective part, which I am sure must be the rule ( Em, it's a RULE not a ruler, a ruler is Queen Elizabeth, your Queen and mine lol) as the three other parts were all catching as they slid along the rule. It must be roughness in the inside edges of the groove in the rule causing it.
