To answer some commonly asked questions... 1) The monitor/recorder on top of my Sony a6500 is the Blackmagic Video Assist (see here 👉amzn.to/2priCKY). I used it primarily to record the on-screen info so you guys could see autofocus points and other features. It was my first time using an external recorder and found it to be simple and intuitive, especially with it being a touchscreen. Not only is the screen highly detailed (1920x1080), but it's super bright for outdoor use. Probably my favorite feature is that it uses SD cards instead of SSD's like other recorders. 2) If you're wondering about the overheating issue that is widely talked about, I was worried about it too. For this particular review, it was about 80 degrees outside and I was constantly switching between 4k, slow motion and stills. Really putting the camera through a stress test and it never gave me an overheating warning. I imagine most of the people experiencing the issue are doing long form 4k videos, because I never saw it. 3) All of the footage in the video was shot with the a6500, except for "talking head" and "product shots." I used the Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS (see here 👉 amzn.to/2qSC44h) most of the time, to capture a shallow depth of field look. I used the 18-105mm f/4 OSS (see here 👉 bhpho.to/2plOh0W) for wider and tight shots. Thanks again to everyone, for your feedback, encouragement and support. I'm blown away by all the positive comments, which are usually hard to come by here on KZbin. It's a breath of fresh air and it truly does inspire me to press forward with more reviews. I've already started making plans to review the Fuji X-T2 and X-T20, since they're already in my hands. After that, I'm completely open to reviewing gear that you guys want to see. Let me know which cameras you'd like me to take a look at and I'll start making a list. 😊📷👊

Hi Moose Winans. How is the work coming on the XT20/XT2 review? I just watched your Dad's review of the a6500 and loved it. I'm a photography enthusiast, aspiring to break into video, and now a Dad as of 2 years ago. That really changed my camera needs. My D5200 has left something to be desired and my hunting has brought Sony and Fuji into my sights. Dying to get your Dad's perspective on the Fuji cameras. No one else is covering that angle.

Nice work Moose. Just ordered the a6500, actually as a backup to my A7R2. One of the neat side effects is that my lenses I use on my full frame will have extended (perceived) focal lengths on this crop sensor body. So my G Master 85 will act like around 135, the GM 70-200 will seem like 112-320, and here's the fun one, my Tamron 150-600, will be like 240-960. Like doubling my lens collection at once. And the in body stabilization is great for all my other lenses as well. It works great on the A7R2, sure it will be just as awesome on this one. Great looking family by the way!
@MooseWinans7 жыл бұрын
Congrats on getting the a6500 📷🙌. You have quite a one-two combo with the A7R2 as your megapixel king and the a6500 as the more compact, speedy chipmunk 😄. Yep, with the crop factor, you have some extra reach when you need it...definitely a plus for sports and wildlife. Really appreciate the kind words! 😊 👊

Hi Moose, nice video. I got attracted here by the title and wondered what a Dad's point of view meant. I'm 67, my son is 37, and we sometimes shoot together - both on Sony a6000 cameras, so I have my own perspective but a generation older. I used to work in photography in my young adult years (c. 1970) where I did pro black and white work. Now my son is teaching me night-time digital, it's a different world for me and a great experience to be his student. Best wishes for the new baby. All those boys already put me in mind of a radio interview I once heard with a female author. She had four daughters and her husband was the only male in the family. So he called the (female) cat George so he could have another male to talk to. :) Thanks again for the warm-hearted video.
@MooseWinans7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim, thank you so much for that. Your comment really brightened my day. I think it's great that you and your son share a passion for photography. I hope I get to do the same with my boys as they get older. Wow, what a story. I sometimes miss the film days. The smell of dark room chemicals, still has a special place in my heart 😂. Ha ha, that's hilarious. If we don't end up having a girl, I'll have to do the same. Thanks again! 😊 👍

Great video! As a dad and also an owner of A6500 (who didn't read the manual), it is an awesome camera. I recently found out about the S&Q mode of slow motion in camera (I used to record in 120fps and then slow it down in post). After using that mode, it made a very nice slow motion video. Once again great review!

Thanks, Moose for sharing your experience! I've been shooting Fuji for a couple of years, tried the RX100 V, and immediately fell in love with it. I can't leave the house without it! It's so much fun to shoot, and I'm getting some incredible results. I don't know what kind of black magic Sony managed to summon but they're crushing it with their range of mirrorless.

I've only held the RX100 V momentarily, but from that short experience, I was really amazed at all the tech they crammed into that little device. You're totally right, Sony is crushing it. 😊📷👊

OK, so this is quite possibly going to be a long comment so apologies in advance. I so very much appreciate the time you've taken in this review. From beginning to end you've been informative, non-preachy and above all else, welcoming. As a massive geek, I sometimes get hung up on the specs and we all know (or come to realise at some point) what's on paper is more often than not, only half the story. Sony should have paid you for this as you're showing off what is effectively a consumer (almost pro-sumer) product and produced professional results. Your ability and creative flair have no doubt shown this crop sensor off to the absolute best of its abilities. I'm looking for an addition to my current 70D setup and although the A7's are extremely tempting with all their full frame goodness, you definitely tipped me over the edge and don't get me wrong, I'm not precious. I was considering the GH5 for a good while too. Will definitely be going with the two lens setup you've listed there but sadly I won't be able to use your affiliate links as aswell as being in the UK, I'm spending vouchers from a photo competition I won recently so have £2,000 to spend in a camera store this side of the pond. However, a like, subscribe and bell turned on from me, for what it's worth. Going forward I know that above all else, you're going to be a great inspiration for me on my channel not just with the focus of the content but the way you produce. I love it. So, thank you. Although at only almost 1,400 subs, I've a way off. Thanks again. I'm off to binge watch a load more of your videos with a pad and pen. Your wife was almost at 'launch' at the time of this video. (Love that term by the way). I hope everything has gone well and your family are all happy and healthy. Cheers! 👍🏻

Really amazing review. Well done. I've been researching for a new camera (currently using panasonic g7) for both facecam gameplays and vlog making, and am stuck between the GH5 and the a6500. Thanks for putting the pros and cons in such a nice way.

Hagazo Coming from you, that means so much! Really appreciate the perspective and feedback from such an accomplished KZbinr. I know Casey Neistat is currently using the GH5 for his vlogs, so if you check out his most recent you'll get an idea for its performance with regards to video autofocus. The one bummer, as mentioned in my review is the screen on the a6500. Since it doesn't flip out, you'll be shooting "blind" unless you use some type of monitor/recorder. Thankfully, the face detection in video recording is so good that it can be trusted for most situations. 😉👍

Great Video, Moose.... I am waiting for the introduction of the next iteration of the A6500 to see what it brings to the table. Then I will make my decision: purchase the new model or get a A6500 at the used price which will be even lower than it is now. Used A6500 prices are decently low at this moment. If I could find one with a decent lens (I'm not absolutely crazy about the kit lens) I might pick up the package. I plan to use this camera with my Canon EF lenses and a Metabones or MC11 adapter but, I will want at least one small general purpose lens to keep the package small for travel...

Rayhan Qadri I think you've hit the nail on the head. A7 series are great for low light, pretty much impossible to beat. The a6500 combines speed and portability, which have their own unique place depending on what's important to you. 😉📷👍

I'll probably opt for A7S since I already own a A7R II and have Metabone Ultra for my EF lenses. Have you looked in to A9 yet? I am personally not buying it as a IDX killer.
@MooseWinans7 жыл бұрын
The A9 is definitely out of my price range, but I do think the tech inside the A9 is exciting. It won't be long before some of those features are passed down to the a7+ and a6k+ series cameras, which will be fun to have.

Awesome vid. My girl is also pregnant and at the exact same stage as yours so it's cool I found this video. I subbed already. I have always had premium compact cams up until now, but I always found the autofocus and image stability to be not so great. Now I am planning on getting a better camera even if its bigger (I will have to carry a lot more stuff than before after the girl is born anyways, so size is not such a big issue for home pics and vids and also for backpacking in our future travels). I found you looking for a6500 reviews, and then I saw you also dig the fuji x-t20 a lot. So I would love to know your oppinion and even a full comparison on those. I am in for nice travel pictures as well as excellent pro-looking cinematic 4k videos. Thanks for sharing so much quality content.

Awesome video man! I want to get into shooting more videos but haven't pulled the trigger on which camera to buy. Currently using the canon rebel t5i.

I think if you're just getting started with video, the biggest feature is good autofocus. The 70D (used) would be a great first step. It has dual pixel AF, which works wonderfully in video when paired with an STM lens. After a while, you may decide that 4k, slo motion and in body image stabilization are important, but I recommend starting with something manageable (like the 70D) and then growing from there.

Great idea the dad review I bet most people will use a camera like this. Fuji xt2 or Sony 6500 both great cameras but for me the Fuji glass out weighs touch screen and stabilisation what do you think?
@MooseWinans7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like the "dad review" idea. I wasn't sure if that would hit home or not. Yep, both great cameras. I actually shot some of the behind-the-scenes videos and "talking head" videos with the X-T2. It's a fantastic camera. I've actually grown to love the joystick for selecting AF points. I agree, Fuji lenses and the in-camera color processing have a unique, unidentifiable quality to them. Sony glass is also very sharp. All in all, I think the choice between the two comes down to price and whether or not in-body image stabilization is important to you. I do wish Fuji would think about including IBIS in some of their flagship cameras. It would be awesome for video. 😊👍

What are your settings for pictures? (Standard? portrait? sharpening? contrast? saturation?). Your pictures look great!
@MooseWinans7 жыл бұрын
For this particular shoot, everything was set to default. I wanted to see how the a6500 captured images/footage without any tweaks. I do think the color and contrast were enhanced due to the "time of day." I was shooting during the golden hour (hour before sunset), so everything had a nice warm, vibrant hue. 😊 👍

great review. my only gripe with this camera is the lack of a body grip. not a battery grip an actual grip as I have bigger hands. apart from that I love my 6500
@davnesto7 жыл бұрын
Hey check out the brand Meiko. They have a compatible grip for the a6500.
@Studat7 жыл бұрын
Davide Nestola but that's a battery grip. I had the fuji xt20 and sold just a grip. no battery.

Yeah, I wonder if there will be some third party options to make it easier (more comfortable) for larger hands. Fingers crossed 😊 👍
