Man, I remember sitting in my living room with my good homie and watching this video for the first time in 2006. We were in 7th grade, and our eyes widened as we became enamored with the genuine coolness of the Ghetto Talkbox. Over the summer, we made one and had a blast. God speed, Moot Booxle.

Anyone else absolutely love that this is still here? This is like the KZbin archives dude! Made my day. I remember seeing this also way back when and I appreciate it even more now. I mean, the video quality is lower but the editing and instruction was so well done. Simple and clear! You go Moot!!

Thank you!! I was one of the OGs of musical KZbin. The first to go viral with a synthesizer video. It was such a different world back then and I believe it’s an angle that is sorely missing from today’s music tech landscape. When I get my health back on track I’m gonna be back to doing that too. Old school. Thank you so much! 🙏

DUDE THIS VIDEO STILL EXISTS. For some reason, I thought about talk boxes again for the first time since high school. I remember using this video to try to cobble together one over summer vacation like christ...a decade ago? KZbin was a much purer place back then. It was also like 3 KZbin accounts ago. Glad to see you're still kickin, man.

This is honestly one of the best KZbin videos of 2006. It's funny to say it, but I mean it. It's a good process video, and it's informative, fairly well produced, and entertaining. This is what KZbin is all about: everyday people making and sharing videos.

Definitely. I have a small collection of synths (Yamaha SY35, Sequential Circuits Split 8, Yamaha DX 7, Korg MS2000, and a small Roland JV-1010, and a Yamaha-TX7) that I've collected over the years. Unfortunately, my health took a huge nosedive and I ended unable to continue building that dream studio. Everything goes to medical bills now and all my equipment is showing it's age. Equipment is needing to get replaced and maintained that I just don't have the cash to maintain any more. I'm hoping things are going to turn around in the future though. I'm dreaming of shoving a modular in there. I saw your studio and salivated. Haha! It looks like you have a really nice setup!
@onetruetroy
@onetruetroy 9 жыл бұрын
+BlackburnBigdragon You have a really nice collection of different equipment. Life does tend to get in the way sometimes and decisions can be tough. I sold all my equipment and have one bundle left: a Roland SP-700 connected to a SCSI rack case with CD-ROM and SyQuest 44. I had to replace a SCSI connector and after it's gone then everything is digital.
@BlackburnBigdragon
@BlackburnBigdragon 9 жыл бұрын
I've gone digital for a huge chunk of my stuff nowadays too. The drawback I've run into with going digital has been that every time I've upgraded my PC, I've lost the use of various software that I've used to work on my music. There are songs that I produced 8-10 years ago that I can no longer go back and even edit or work on any more. If I want to re-record them, I have to re-do them from scratch now. Same thing with music hardware designed to work on the PC. Often, companies just make the hardware and the driver for the operating system at the time and then they're done with it and don't update the driver after that which doesn't help if you update your system a few years later and their driver doesn't work. I've been burned by three external midi interfaces and an external sound card where that happened.

I had those same speakers back in 1998 when it came with a new Gateway computer. They did sound nice. I see them in thrift stores every once in a while. I'm going to pick them up the next time I see them. Thank you for posting this back then. 👍👍👍👍👍

Angry Canadian Thank you for that comment. It has encouraged me! It came at a time when I’m really feeling inspired to try to make KZbin more of a part of my life. I’ve had a lot of health problems in the past that have kept me from being able to be consistent. I lost all my momentum more than once. I’ve had three viral videos! It’s really a shame that I haven’t capitalized on that success. Never too late!!

saw your face in the behringer synth videos an immediately remember THIS video when i started making music in 2006. so i found out what a talkbox is. found this video on this new youtube thing and loved the idea of the video and had to do it myself but knew shit about anything. first time building some cheap diy music gear. my g-talkbox was a completley disaster and won't really work, but i loved doing this stuff. 5 years later i bought a real talkbox from money i made with music, lol. back then it was mindblowing for me to realize, that i can find free videos on the internet to learn making music...

Yep I was influenced by this video, and I sure thousands like me built their own Talk-Box. I purchased a quality horn speaker and furnished a DIY casing. All in all I think I spent 40 dollars total which resulted in a talk-box I've used for live gigs for years. It's in my garage now buried under years of memories. Watching this video again after all these years makes me want to dig it out and play with it again.

@MultiAirGunner Vou have to use a microphone. the signal flow is as follows instrument -> talkbox -> oral cavity as resonant cavity ->microphone -> p.a , seperate amp or recording device. This is a very simple, basic talkbox, not a rocktron banshee II, which can be used like a normal guitar effect but costs 250 bucks.

@Lopaxe i think you just move lips and tounge as well blocking and unblocking your throat. i dont know if you are familiar with the jews harp but it is a small metal instrument that doesnt make sound on its own but creates a vibration and allows you to use your mouth as an amp and change the pitch by making the amount of space in your mouth smaller or lager. the same concept works here except the synth and speaker make the pitch and you use your mouth to shape it into words

would this setup work? i have a pod x3 live, peavey speakers, an old amp and a ghetto talk box. i have my guitar in the "guitar in" input on my pod x3 live, and cables running from the "live out" output to my speakers. (normal setup.) then i have a cable connecting the "fx out" output on my x3 live to the "input" on my old amp, and plug another cable from the headphones output in the amp to the "fx in" input on the x3 live. then plug the ghetto talk box into the headphone jack on my old amp

I have to try this... It definitively shreds T-Pain and other autotuners nowadays apart. Awesome work, man. Thanks. =)

So actually the sound comes from the tube instead of the... speakers from your keyboard?

would a cheap ebay pyle handheld megaphone work? What diameter hose to get at home depot? I was also just considering trashing some cheap bookshelf speaker and shoving a tube into the bass port but making sure to take out the farberglass first and powering the whole contraption from my gemini pa amp
