Our friends Cody and Kristen Walker brought their new Drag And Drive 68 Chrysler by the shop to sort out an electrical issue, and all was going well until it was time to do the cars first ever burnout in the parking lot.
If you ever wondered what an exploding Torqueflite looks and sounds like, this video is for you!

🤞That guy is really lucky the transmission exploded there at his buddy's repair shop, and not in the burnout box at the track, or on a back road out the middle of nowhere! This is pretty much the ideal location for it to happen. (Maybe not so much for UT.....) This guy's next 2 moves are obvious: 👉1). Clean up the mess 👉2). Swap the car out with a 63-1/2 Galaxie with a 460 stroked to 514ci, and a C6! 😁

Ask for one simple repair need HOURS of work.

I've come across that one a few times. Over the years the connections on the back of the ammeter work loose until you have complete failure. In one case it didn't fail, but the whole system voltage was low due to the bad connection. Took a while to find that one. I am one of the few people that I know that actually enjoys wiring. Strange since it requires a lot of patience and I never thought of myself as a patient person. I may be a Ferd guy, nut I love that car! I don't even think of it as "old". I grew up driving cars of that era, so it's pretty normal to me. My daily is a 66. Give those peeps credit for a good sense of humor. He laughed as soon as he blew it to pieces. Not sure I would have taken it so well. THAT folks is why you use a trans blanket or scatter shield. It could have been a lot worse without it. Very educational video. OK, the carnage was fun too.

Loving the Newport, I'm a Chrysler C body lover & daily driver myself. You could also feed a 10 gauge wire to the alternator field stud (if stock) to the starter relay stud to take the bulk of the current off of the ammeter wire. Same can be done to bypass the bulkhead connector with a similar wire to the back of the alternator/ammeter connections, just be sure to have a fusible link here!

I bought a 1978 D-150 that came from California. I'm pretty sure it hasn't been serviced in intervals more than fluid changes! I pulled out the garage, I made it around the corner, and it died! I changed plugs, and it ran for a second. It coughed and started again, and then I got a no start condition! I noticed smoke coming from under the hood and just yanked out the wiring under the hood. I ordered a new harness from the ICM and broke down and went thru the wiring! I got rid of old wiring from the bulkhead, and now it runs great! Having a test light is EVERYTHING! Between UTC and Nick's Garage... you can learn more than you thought you knew about cars and / or Mopars! It's always a good thing when you have extra parts, it helps ease the pain😂!

Tony, I had a 1966 Dodge Monaco my father in-law gave me after he blew the engine 1977. No coolant due to leaking heater core. It had problems like is described in this video. I would go fine for days driving to work. 30 miles each way. Till finally it quit on Thanksgiving 1982. I saw this electrical problem in many MOPARs in recent years at car shows & cruise ins. The wiring block going through the fire wall had rusted & corroded. Yes I could wiggle the wires & lights would work & engine would start. But no brake lights. One time every light bulb in my old Dodge blew up really! The fix was to remove the wiring block & replace every corroded rusted & broken wire. It took some time hanging upside down under dashboard & going to the wires in engine compartment. I had the Dodge for many years till it was totalled in 2 accidents in one month. So get out your wire cutters & butt connectors. Need some 14 gauge wire when some wires had to be cut back a couple inches several almost a foot. Yes the transmission blew too. What makes me mad? I had the Dodge for years in primer due to rust behind the rear tire fender. To get T boned & my son almost got killed in last accident. Those old 60s era Mopars are great. Could sit 4 adults in back seat & be comfortable. Tell Cody the fix I have discussed here. Thanks Tony for your channel helping us Shade tree mechanics.

Back in the 70s at the World of Wheels Rod & Custom show at McCormick Place in Chicago, as the cars were leaving after the show was over, one guy in a T-Bucket type of hot rod had a big block Mopar and 727 trans. He did like a 6000 rpm neutral drop and exploded the trans in a very similar fashion to this! It took almost an hour to get the mess cleaned up, but, hey, it provided entertainment for those around him! I feel sorry for this couple, but I think they already understand the perils of high performance.

Finally some c body content but poor 727. Love this 68! I have my 67 Newport custom HT which I'd love to take down a strip one day. My question, is it only detrimental to the sprag if you let off in 1st gear? So if you change into 2nd while still revving the guts out of it is it sweet to let off in 2nd or 3rd? I'm fearing for my sprag now... haha
@codyramos3200
@codyramos3200 Жыл бұрын
I think its a 1st gear thing.. well from my understanding at least . Burnout in 1st gear high rpm and letting the tires hook letting off the throttle causes the sprag failure... which can literally make the transmission explode .. people have lost their feet when it happens.
