I don't quite get it. This movie is from 1982. I wonder why old LAPD cars with the tin can lights are still used. In 1979 the Aerodynic light bar was used specifically on the Ford Fairmont. In 1980 and 1981 all Plymouth Gran Furies had the red and blue Aerodynic light bar. I saw a documentary from 1981 and it had several LAPD vehicles with the new light bar. Unless these were supposed to be reserve vehicles that were junked.

@@jasonbogart7566 , the harsh reality was that the Chevrolet Citation was a dog of a car, and it also looked like a squished Chevrolet Chevette, and the Chevrolet Celebrity looked like a cousin to the sedan version of the Chevrolet Citation known as the Chevrolet Citation II. Now as for the Chevrolet Chevette on the other hand, Vauxhall made it, meaning their own badge swapped version of the car, which is the Vauxhall Chevette, into a pretty decent rally car, and, with a bit of tweaking to it, that car, even in its lesser Chevrolet form, could not only make the Chevrolet Chevette a decent rally car as well, but also a decent tuner/hot hatch as well. Seriously, one of those Brazilian/Argentinian Chevrolet muscle car V6 engines should be swapped out of said muscle cars and put into a Chevrolet Chevette, along with an improved body, frame, suspension, transmission, and brakes. A vehicle like the Opala SS would be a MUCH more awesome car with a better and improved suspension, body, frame, transmission, and brakes, as well as an awesome engine, like a modified 454 cu in engine for a high end Chevrolet Chevelle SS, for example.

They did. Kind of. The California Highway Patrol did use 12 Camaro Z28’s as an experiment back in the late 70’s because they knew that Dodge would quit offering big block 440 police cars, so they tested different kinds of cars for different jobs. They also tested 302 Fairmont, 305 Malibus and either a Dodge Aspen or Plymouth Volare 318 wagon. The Z28 was the pursuit car. It wasn’t a true police package car but the brakes were upgraded and the rear gearing changed but otherwise they were stock Camaros. They did like the decent for the time performance but they had severe issues with these cars… most of them blew their engines, some repeatedly. The only 2 that didn’t have engine issues were the 2 that were assigned to the Los Angeles area; most of the time they idled in heavy LA traffic. The idea of a specialized pursuit car was sound as the small block sedans like the 318 Dodges were woefully underpowered and weren’t up to pursuit duty. The ‘82 Mustang 5.0 stepped in and became the pursuit car for the CHP and was quite successful.
