If you look at the European folklore of the will-o-wisps its pretty dark it's believed will-o-wisps are the spirits of the dead, fairies or a variety of other supernatural which attempt to lead travelers to there demise (really nice right) and sometimes there believed to be the spirits of the unbaptized or stillborn children flattering between heaven and hell ( again lovely thought)
@sorcerersapprentice5 жыл бұрын
European folklore fae tend to be like that in general. Before Victorian times, where the whole "fairies are people with wings" idea was brought about, they tended to come in a lot of varieties. Ranging from beautiful holier then thou beings (like the Elves from LOTR) to beings that tested mortals (like the Enchantress in Beauty and the Beast) to outright demonic. In fact, the fae in general were believed to be outright demons by the English after the fall of Rome and before the European Renaissance. Even outside of that, there were a lot of deadly fae in folklore around the world. For instance, the Red Cap of Scottish Mythology hung out near abandoned castles and killed people, bathing their red caps in the corpses blood. (Sounds like a fun fae to be around...)

I think it might be her primary skill set. Her woodcarvings are bear themed so maybe larger spells beyond potions, levitation, and telekinesis are bear themed. Perhaps she channels/worships the spirit, totem, or god/goddess of a bear to perform magic. So her spells naturally create bears, especially as they grow in power & complexity. Meaning a small enchantment like moving an inanimate object doesn’t require a bear, but carving and shape shifting does. It might also appease the source of her power, so maybe she needs to make bears to maintain her magic. That’d be my guess.

I'm just going to put this headcanon here that: Merida is a descendant of Mor'du. Specifically, Merida and Queen Elenor are descendants. For one example: though their reasons are different Merida and Mor'du both made the same choice in trying to change their fates. Even both trading their family's signets to do so to the same witch for the same spell. The means to undo the spell, were also both linked to their relationship to their families. History often repeats itself, more so when said history remains unknown from generation to generation. And I'm saying it's Elenor, because she's closer in resemblance than Fergus. This also explains why Mor'du took to attacking Merida, even as a young child. A bear is known as a protective parent. Perhaps it was the wisps leading her into his sight or, something about her that reminded Mor'du of his own family. Signs in tha abandoned throne room hint Mor'du, on some level, regrets his actions and perhaps might want to track down surviving relatives to undo his spell. Impossible as he is a mad, weapon-ridden, violent animal... but, just a thought.

I don't think Mor'du was forgiven nor was his soul redeemed. In the end he became a will-o-wisp, a spirit thought to be caught between heaven and hell or life and death, unable to rest. The nod of thanks he gave Merida and her mother feels more like gratitude for ending his bloodshed reign for good. A fate witch I believe is fit for a man who threw everything good he had away because he felt wronged and became filled with greed. He may have lived a cursed life, yes. However it was he who chose that life and he who is responsible for the death of his brothers and his own kingdom.

It was only because Queen Elinor's daughter was with her that stopped her from completely transforming irreversibly into a bear.

@cybercriminal31103 жыл бұрын
@Asparagus Plant Well, Kenai ended up being a bear so no not the worst. Turning human into an animal is generally a punishment.
@johnathangrey20033 жыл бұрын
Not exactly evil Kenai. Mor’du chose the life of a bear in exchange for power. Kenai became a bear as a lesson for irresponsibility, and accepted it out of love for Koda as well as the joy it brought him. He wasn’t a jerk, just lost until Sitka could guide him down the right path. Mor’du certainly was a jerk though. That’s why there’s an overall difference between the bears of Brave and Brother Bear. Brother Bears bears became what they were through the spirits of nature’s will whereas the bears of brave were cursed by a witches spell fuelled by pride. Forfeiting their humanity in exchange for greed. As for bears being treated as horrible. No. The whole point of Brother Bear is that they are people just like humans. Kenai became a bear to learn how grave & wrong his choice to kill Kodas mother was and Brave depicted humans cursed to lose themselves as they became bears. In Jungle Book Baloo the bear is a wonderful papa bear to Mowglii. In Fox and the Hound the bear was only defending himself from a hunter who was illegally hunting Todd. So bears aren’t given any unfair treatment. Even in Mor’du’s case him hunting Merida actually fits with bear behaviour. Aggressive male bears have been documented to kill bear cubs that aren’t their own to force female bears to go into heat & mate with them. Given that Elinors a cursed bear with cubs, that’s probably why he was after them.

So there, he was punished. In addition we haven't sen his afterlife, he'll likely have to spent an eternity in search for redemption in the eyes of whatever gods rule those lands, have fun with that Mordy.

I always thought the first few minutes of Merida showing her archer abilities would save her(and her mother) by the end of the movie, showing that she's independent and her own independence and power prove that she doesn't need someone to protect her. I didn't expect her mother to nearly die protecting Merida over someone who is 10 times powerful than her own. This is a good twist. Merida doesn't need a prince, she doesn't even know she NEEDED her mother the most. And her mother, despite the arguments, would protect her daughter instantly risking her own life for Merida.
@witchofthestorm4 жыл бұрын
My theory was well, we see 4 brothers. And we see the 4 clans later on. I always theorized that the 4 clans all came from the original 4 brothers. And the witch, seeing Merida basically repeating history, she attempted to add another chance. Great to know I'm not the only one who had thought of this and even expanded upon it. And yes, I believe Mor'du's sould should've been redeemed. He started as a powerful and selfish man that believed he could be king, caused so much death and harm, turned into a bear to attempt to seal his fate. But being trapped, even as a bear, he may have seen all the destruction he brought and felt guilty. I don't know, in a way this reminds me some of Beast/Prince Adam from Beauty and The Beast. Mor'du despaired and regretted all he'd done because he was cursed to be a monster, basically: a monster you act, than a monster you will become. Anyway, I think I'm rambling, I think Mor'du was punished for his power by becoming a bear, and was redeemed because he saw he had become a monster.

I think the fact that his spirit had managed to rise after his body was destroyed was supposed to be proof that he had been remorseful of his actions deep down for hundreds of years, but couldn't escape the curse he brought upon himself. Interesting bit of symbolism with the carving of the brothers and the tapestry of Clan DunBroch, the tapestry is cloth, which can be sewn back together once torn apart, but stone (at least in 10th Century Scotland) could not be fixed when broken. Once Mor'du crossed that line, there was nothing he could do to save himself, the band was irreparably damaged, but Merida and Elenor could repair their damaged relationship and subsequently save the queen.

To be fair, the prince was living in his own personal hell for an untold number of years. They call that kingdom ancient, so it's likely to have been several centuries even. His humanity was all but d=gone and only when he got it back in his spirit form did he realize how bad of a person was. And he's not completely free now. He turned into a wisp which in the movie help guide people. Perhaps this is a start of his atonement, to be an earthbound spirit that helps guide those that are lost from their paths until such a day comes where he's earned his freedom.
@wenstonbryant77095 жыл бұрын
I think that all the wisps, are the people that the eldest son killed. And the wisps wanted to finally end mor’du’s rain of terror and ultimately his suffering. Hoping that Merida, and her mom were the kingdom’s salvation, and sensing the desire within merida, the wisps showed Merida the way to the witche’s shop so that someone was finally strong enough to kill mor’du. And then they showed them the way to the mor’du’s fallen kingdom. There Merida learns what happened to him, in full detail. And ultimately understands how to change her mother back. The mother then fights mor’du. It’s my personal believe that she learned that the pillar was the answer to kill him from a past experience. When they began to flee the ruins of mor’du, the mother tripped and slipped into a pillar. After remembering that near death experience, she slams mor’du into the pillar to kill him. Then after his soul is finally set free, he himself transforms into a wisp, and nods his head as if to say, well done and thank you for saving us(US being mor’du and the rest of the kingdom there. He then floats off to join the rest of his family in a restful slumber. Shortly after their destiny in this legend is fulfilled, merida’s mother Eleanor is returned to her former self. I then believe that at the end of Brave, the wisp that we see fly out of the screen is actually the father/king of the old kingdom, looking at the saviors of the land. Then he flies off and joins his sons🔥.
@Kishu14144 жыл бұрын
I had a theory that Mordu and his brothers were the ancestors of the four clans. Even though that makes Merida and her suitors cousins, it was because of a common ancestor many decades ago. It would also make sense for the need for an alliance with Mordu’s brothers’ clans to make an alliance with their stronger more powerful brother clan Mor’du’s descendants Merida and her father.

I couldn't find any evidence of Mor'du's age anywhere (No Disney Wiki or Wikipedia article I could find even hinted at it), but I'd think we're talking centuries. You don't get a situation where four clans rise to prominence with the kind of history the modern clans have, while a kingdom like that of Mor'du falls into decay and then becomes the stuff of legend, in just a few decades. It seems that Mor'du's curse prevented him from dying of old age, as well as being borderline-unkillable in battle

What cracked me up was how they could mistake the Queen when she was a bear for him. Weird thing is the people who did the voice of the Queen, Lord Dingwall and the witch were in the Harry Potter movies. I was amazed the witch played Mrs. Weasley. The only fault with Brave was it was at the VERY end after all credits they show the crow delivering all the stuff Merida bought

An outstandingly awesome and brilliantly fantastic video.:) Thank you so very much, for making and sharing this story.:D

From the way they pronounce his name I'd say Mor'dhu is derived from Scots Gaelic though I'm not sure the grammar is correct. The two-handed sword used in Braveheart is called a Claidheamh-Mòr (Claymore) which means "Great Sword" but the adjective comes second.

Seriously the wise and just brother were also fighting each other . All other brothers should have united against their elder brother and divided the kingdom equally. Seems like all brothers were greedy and selfish as the elder brother

This origin was SO well-done, Brave is one of my favourite movie's to watch with my mum. Also CONGRATULATIONS~! I'm so very happy to see that you graduated and have gotten your own place Isaac! ☺

First, congratulations on your graduation from college, Isaac, we're proud of you! Second, the prince had a chance to redeem himself, yet the Wiles of power corrupted him. Even in the afterlife, he will be held accountable for his actions. Another great video, Isaac, and the best to you in your endeavors through life.

I think being trapped, mindless and fueled by rage towards everything, in an age-worn body for so many generations is enough of a punishment for the eldest prince and he could finally be at peace again once he died

@@itfigurescomics6704 Y'know, I stand corrected. I was certain that Madam Mim was from "The Black Cauldron." I honestly only remembered Merlin. I went back and looked again, and sure enough, she is in "The Sword In The Stone." There's a witch in "The Black Cauldron" that I was certain was her.

Well moving on and being judged are two different things. We saw him die, and then turn into a wisp. I think he was made to serve as a wisp to atone for his actions.

I think while Mordu was a bear he must’ve suffered great and agonizing pain like reliving the lives he took or feeling the betrayal he caused and I think that would be a fair price for his released soul. He had to have gone through everything: the agony, the slaughter, the sadness, the fear of everyone he hurt in order to come to the absolute conclusion that he has done so much wrong. Imagine killing the people you grew up with, who you loved and who loved you back. Imagine killing people who didn’t even deserve it and it was only for your selfish cause. I think he suffered decades enough to fully pay for and realize the damage he had done.

Those who crave power often become enthralled by it and thus become monsters. As the old saying goes: "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely"
@hinatachibi72235 жыл бұрын
When people are blinded by intense emotions, it can be hard to reason with them (and they oddly become very determined on that single goal). However, I feel he should have not been able to just be set free after having his soul depart from the monster. If anything, his soul should have been sent to a purgatory or had gone through a trial of some sort to truly have him repent for the damage he did. Late night commenting is bad I'll end it here 🤷♀️

It seems that Mor'du also became semi-immortal (a concept of an individual can live forever as long as they aren't killed) after he consumed the spell considering that he was a former prince from a kingdom described to be ancient and still alive during the events of the movie.

I was actually kinda hoping King Fergus would eat the cake and become an immense bear that would rival Mor’du and they’d have an all out fight. That would’ve been epic ngl. Edit: I just realized that wouldn’t have really looked as cool as I thought because Fergus has a peg leg. Actually seeing a bear with a peg leg would be pretty cool ngl- *What am I even talking about?*

Can you do a video telling the origins of Iago the Parrot from Aladdin? The only things I know about Iago, is due his long partnership with Jafar, Iago has a vast knowledge of magic more than the Genie himself, and Iago was purchased by Jafar in the marketplace some years before the events of Aladdin.
@BellaKarim235 жыл бұрын
I don't think that he was actually forgiven, freed yes but not absolved of responsibility. He became a will-o'-the-wisp. His soul still on earth as the little blue creature. That isn't forgiveness. In the British folklore will-o'-the-wisp are actually malicious, usually but not always, little blue fire fairies or fairy fire that lead people astray. In the move, the will-o'-the-wisp lead travelers to their destiny, to the witch's house to get a spell to teach them a lesson but that would also classify them as bad since it is a fate that is dangerous and could lead to the same curse he faced. Merida and her mom learned their lessons but like Mor'du, others may end up like him. It's a bad trick and he became the same thing that ultimately led him to become Mor'du and would be leading others as he and Merida had been led, for good or ill. That isn't forgiveness or absolution. It's both a punishment and a penance for his own deeds. His legend would teach others about the price of foolish pride and he would lead others to take the same test he took and failed

I believe every one deserve a chance or redemption. Like 50 out of a hundred. And while I like to think the prince had two sides where his greed took over his Conscience. While the greed took over his heart making him to things he wasn’t proud of. Deep in his soul he wished for his brothers love as did his father. As he was the first born and years older he watched his brothers be born and thought as advisers they would give him to become a great kingdom still. But his greed, ego, and pride wanted more than family, and so both he and his family paid the price. But his soul was trapped in the beast caged in the prison he created in his body. But he finally has redemption.
@Angelicbrandy5 жыл бұрын
I don't think his soul was really redeemed, he turned into a wisp. Perhaps he now has to serve the witch and repent for his wrong doings like the other wisps before he can move on?
