You know, i think at the end of the day Clay does care about Orel. When Orel hugs him or say "I love you, Dad", Clay still smiles and could totally tell Orel to get off him. Clay doesn't know how to process a loving father/son relationship; he still unknowingly appreciates Orel's one-sided love.
