As an American who studies the history of the of the US, I applaude Professor Haldane's assessment of American values and trends. It is important to remember that the States CREATED the Federal government, not the other way around. One of the longest-running debates in this country has been the Rights of the States versus the Federal government. The Civil War was a watershed event in the history of the country in empowering the Federal government over the States; as Professor Haldane points out, the Second World War was another in which the Federal government found itself governing as a Super Power with an further reduction in the Rights of the States. Obviously, the debate over States' Rights is still alive and well in this country.

"According to the different relationships and different aspects, justice has obtained more appropriate definitions throughout the centuries. Hence the concept of justice: communicative, distributive, legal and social. All this testifies what a fundamental significance justice has for the moral order among men, in social and international relations. It can be said that the very meaning of man's existence on earth is bound up with justice. To define correctly "how much is due" to each one from all and at the same time to all from each one, "what is due" (debitum) to man from man in different systems and relationships-to define, and above all to put into practice!-is a great thing, through which every man lives, and thanks to which his life has a meaning." From a Christian point of view who has the mind of Christ, how can you not receive revelation? (1 Cor. 2:16) Revelation comes from The Father, through The Son by The Holy Spirit. Jesus, the word made flesh was sitting with Peter and He didn't tell him, so how could it not be a revelation from The Father through The Spirit? If you are not led by The Spirit you are under The Written Law {religion} (Gal. 5:18 Aramaic) I find that revelation leads me to Scripture. Yeshua answered and said to him, “You are Blessed, Shimeon Bar Yona, because flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in Heaven.” Matt. 16:17 Aramaic

It is interesting how this philosopher would consider the concept of the soul. Much debate over this even among Christians from neuroscientists and philosophers. "For most of human history we have cherished the idea that there is a separate immaterial part of each of us - a mind or a soul - that must live somewhere within our body. That has gradually changed with the advent of scientific approaches to mind - body relations. We now view the mind as a functional property of the brain, not "something located somewhere" The mind is a firmly embodied process within the brain rather like the program that runs within a computer" Neuroscience Psychology and Religion , p.24.

"Which 'revelation' is one to accept? One needs to apply an intellectual filter in the reading of the scriptures" (34:00). In this single short sentence Professor Haldane encapsulates THE PROBLEM for the Christian Church today......the problem of HOW we read our scriptures! We are not devout Muslims, who are compelled to read our scriptures literally, or as fundamentalists (contrast The Koran, The Imrans: 3:5ff); yet many Christians give the impression of believing in 'inlibration'; rather than 'incarnation'. Why would you go to the writings of a First Century Christian missionary, and ex-Pharisee, to seek a systematic ETHICAL code; and omit all contemporary insights into human behaviour? At the root of this question lies one of the treasured 'sayings' of Jesus ('pericopes'), which was incorporated into our scriptures: "The Sabbath is made for man: not man for the Sabbath". This is where the 'liberals' in the Church ARE on to something. But, for some reason, those same 'liberals' appear to have lost sight of the young Jew who taught, gave offence to the 'religious', was crucified, dead and buried: and then ROSE AGAIN. For some reason, the 'liberals' find this claim by the primitive Christians, to be peculiarly, 'unbelievable'.

Ultimately there is no point in talking to someone who dishonestly changes the meanings of language, won't reason and demands total surrender. Arguing with a fool proves there are two fools in the room. But maybe they are not fools but charlatans. In which case I am the only fool in trying to reason with them. Nowadays I just walk away. I doubt that qualifies as toleration. More like contempt and despair.

Can one be outside oneself? Be totally objective for lack of a better word? No. I cannot be what I am not. In the sense of that, not even God Himself can be what He is not. He is Subjective - all comes from Him. Nothing exists apart from Him. This constant objection that one must be objective and not subjective is an impossible task. You cannot think outside yourself. You can learn, you can change your opinion, you can not comprehend etc. but you cannot think another’s thoughts in its totality. All philosophers have a belief - how can they not? Perhaps the only philosopher who hasn’t, is the philosopher who was never born.
