Formulas and Gateways are behemoths of death metal for the turn of the 21st century imo, and it feels like people don't give them enough credit because David Vincent wasn't on them

Yep, always has. They trailblazed death metal. There ain't much modern death metal has it didn't learn from Morbid Angel, Carcass, Napalm Death, Deicide. They did it first. And in my opinion, best. But there's at least a little bit of nostalgia in that. I was there when it blew up in 1990-1994 or thereabouts. When death metal achieved its greatness.
