i'm swiss and i remember that when the news of his death came around they stopped the regular tv programme for a tribute to him, it was a huge thing as many of us identified with him, somewhat like with roger federer, and i was genuinely sad. my sister knows his wife (same climbing club) it was sad all around:( if you understand swiss german, watch the srf dok documentary about him and his family, very well made!

Climbing is kind of underrated. The number of sherpas that died or summited and nobody knows their names or cares to know. Ueli is the greatest at speed climbing the highest peaks in the world. Telling someone like him to not climb alone is like cutting someone's feet off and saying, "See but you wont ever fall again because you can't walk". He climbed is what he did and will for the rest of eternity. RIP.

The guide who found ueli's body put it this way: If you have been to the Himalayas, you will often see Bharal, blue sheep, very high on the mountains. They are very agile and fast so as to protect themselves from snow leopards. But sometimes, blue sheep fall off from cliffs. Each time they do, there is a different reason. Sometimes they fall due to rock fall, other times, they have perhaps run too fast, etc. Perhaps we must think of Ueli as such - as a Bharal, as one of our blue sheep of the Himalayas who one day fell for an unexpected reason but was otherwise a master.

Courir sur la montagne c'est être "the best" ?! What a poor conception!

I was lucky enough to meet Ueli in 2016, on Cologne Alpine Day in Germany. He was such a nice guy and during his talk used the many Eiger climbs and records as a running gag. @@douglasgray1648 To be fair, the difficulty of the peak he was ascending is always massively underreported in these videos. He was climbing a peak that was many times more difficult then Everest from a technical aspect, at a great height, and without support, guide ropes or even a trail to follow. He died on a rather difficult and dangerous climb, not an easy one.

Sorry, but Anatoli Boukreev is the Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 T800 Terminator of mountain climbing. Not only did he go up Everest without O2 since Terminators don’t need oxygen, during the Everest disaster which killed and maimed many people he repeatedly went into the darkness:during a storm to find lost souls and bring them to safety. In a culture that finds it acceptable to leave people for dead due to the effort it takes to save them, Anatoli had the balls and the skills to go into the storm and bring people out of it. On the other hand, Beck was left for dead twice by people that never checked for a pulse and didn’t want to “waste” energy to bring him off the mountain. I’d rather have 1 Anatoli than 10 guys with speed records

I miss Ueli and his accomplishments, his fall was brutal, I have read a few stories that described the condition of his body after his fall, it was horrific, he was basically torn apart, as in being in pieces. Gruesome way to go for sure. Ueli paid the ultimate price, but he wasn't going to stop what he loved to do. I don't think it was a horrible death for him overall, if a warrior dies in battle, that is a fitting end for them, him dying in the mountains was a fitting end for him. I could never see Ueli ever growing old with what he was pushing in the mountains. I have no problem calling him the GOAT. Ueli will always be remembered, therefore, he is never gone.

It's all well and good that mountaineers want to push the limits. But if you have family who depend on you, just as Rob Hall did, just as John Harlan did, well, is your drive so important to you that you would to a large degree sacrifice their futures:?? Maybe it's a bad comparison between Harlan and Hall, but it's the same thing. When you're married, your chief responsibiliy is to ferry your family through to fulfillment. I'd appreciate any opinions on this.

Another tremendous mountaineer was David Lama. Sadly, he died quite young. One of his late accomplishments was a solo first ascent of 'Lunag Ri'. On his first two attempts, he climbed with the famous climber Conrad Anker. On the second attempt, Conrad suffered a heart attack, but was able to descend and be flown to a hospital for surgery. Conrad survived but stopped high altitude climbing. David returned a year or so later and solo'd Lunag Ri, being the first person to summit it. (There's a 3 minute, mostly drone video of this insane ascent kzbin.info/www/bejne/h36weHmQnZuqras) David and two other world class climbers later died in an avalanche following a very technical but successful summit in the Canadian rockies,.

He didnt know if his Lhotse project was possible as no one had climbed the route between Everest and Lhotse before. Ueli said in his video: It will be a success unless I die.

.....why do some find it necessary to mention the obvious horrible things esp. When it comes to something as delicate like this tragedy?... Frozen cold stone vs clay....what's the outcome if you bash the two together?....the answer should be apparant?...so why mention the horrible?..if you ever seen something as such up close?...it will change you....well...hopefully at least...

Climbing must be the epitome of narcissism, risking your life when you have a family at home. Getting in trouble means someone else has to risk their life to save yours….pathetic bunch.

Most number of summits and fastest were held by Sherpa. Almost every Sherpa family has one or two who summited but the there is discriminatory exclusion of Sherpa. Tenzin Norgay was not knighted but Hillary was which shows the racism as both of them were from British expedition. Ueli was a great climber but not a good person as he and his buddies were known for picking fist fight with Sherpa on the Everest.

I remember my brother showed me a video of Ueli climbing the Eiger in record time. I was impressed by two things: His talent, and his blatant disregard for his own life and for those who loved him. I told my brother - "I give him three years - max". I guess I was the stupid one - he lived 5 more years. There is a big reason the greats - Hillary and Meisner - lived into old age. They squandered not their talents.

Are there many climbers who do what Steck did - climb without any protection - who survive for long? Like, eventually you're going to fall, right? Nobody's perfect. It just seems insane to me.

No there are not, Alex Honnold thankfully retired from free soloing. As soon as snow and ice are involved, death is 100% guaranteed if you push past your prime. It's an arrogant and selfish endeavour if you have a wife, if you also have kids it makes you a genuinely awful person

I remember when I learned about mountaineering after reading John Kraurer’ s Into Thin Air. Alex Honold really impressed and then I discovered Steck. When you know the history of the Eiger’s north face, you realize just how incredibly insane his speed runs of it are. Then to add that Annapurna ascension. I thought he’d be setting records for the 14 eight thousanders. And then tragedy struck, mountaineer lost a living legend. He really pushed the maximum potential a human can physically achieve.

@@kartyl1wielki He's a great writer but was critical of Anatoli but he explained his criticism well and still gave him credit for the rescues he did. So while it's certainly John's perspective and not the necessarily the consensus, it is not at all lies and false accusations. Besides his take on Anatoli, I don't think there's anything else controversial about it, so it's definitely not "full" of anything.
