I went to see Morbius, with the intention of being able to make one of my standard video essays investigating something, some theme or some idea, from the film. This... did not happen. Morbius left me broken, bruised, and ill. I don't typically make videos like this - it's fairly nitpicky at times, and skews a little closer to the 'CinemaSins school of faux-criticism' than I'd like. But this isn't an analysis so much as it's an audio recording of me losing my mind in the wake of this disaster of a film. I wasn't even sure whether to publish it. Part of me wondered if I should have kept the audio to myself, and treated it as therapy rather than content. But some of the folks in the Discord wanted to see it, so here you go: Pillar of Garbage going insane over Morbius.

From what you say, Milo could have been pretty interesting. He spent his whole life being looked down upon because of his condition, by bullies, by society in general, and that made him bitter. Because of all this built-up anger, the moment he becomes a vampire, he decides to lash out and be the bully for a change. Maybe make Morbius start off just as bitter, but over time he develops past his unlikeable qualities, while Milo actually gets worse.

To add on to this point you could have had a scene before Morbius goes off to Morbius himself where Milo calls him out on being a jackass and Morbius dismisses it and Milo lets it go because they are friends. Could even have a point where Morbius is beginning to grow but isn't ready to admit it. He catches Milo doing something JUST AS BAD as the earlier scene and Milo replies "Why do you have a problem with it? You do the same thing," and that would be the cold splash of water that Morbius needs to full realize how much of a jackass he's been but gets too wrapped up correcting himself and or dealing with fall out from his earlier actioinis (such as the high of being a vamp and nobody could realistically stop him) and then when he finally confronts Milo and sees how much of a monster he has become Morbius could have lamented that he never noticed how much his friend was suffering and now it maybe too late to save him AND how he so narrowlly avoided going down that path himself. I don't know I'm just spitballing hre.

One thing that really annoyed me was how the woman was turned into a vampire at the end when the movie spends ages showing us that it was specifically the interaction between the disease and the cure that made Morbius and Milo into vampires. Also, Milo being an intelligent man (now vampire) should know that killing so many people would cause the military to come after him, thereby ending whatever new world order he was planning pretty quickly. And the whole hero and villain have the same abilities for final fight trope is well past it's expiry date and needs to be thrown out.

OK, they can't be ham-fisted enough to go for the girlfriend; I mean, that's a done-to-death cliche at this- "Did you guess? Well, either way you're right because it happens to both of them." That's dumber than I thought they'd- "But then it *doesn't!* It walks one of them back-" Ugh. They can't even commit to killing someone off for a whole movie.

You had more control then me lets get of of town will have to do blood transfusion until i have figured out this blood lust glad im going through this with my best friend! Milo: But i dont want to go back! i want to have fun! we are the evolution! Morbius: Buddy i doubt you want to be hunted your entire life your rich. Lets find away to keep are powers not kill people and party just promise we continue to use blood transfusion that we been doing fo 40 years what's a few more days. I agree man Like what were they thinking? I honestly wanted to give it a chance because Venom, but they some how made the movie worse. Morbius isn't interesting nor is anyone else. I think the only character that can say that is interesting is Milo. He had that ONE scene where he couldn't defend himself, although their were 4 or 3 boys against him. Then he seems angry that Morbius is getting to close to his assistant which I guess is enough for him to ok be jealous. I can understand him dancing was goofy but he didn't care. If you finally got the ability to walk again and hell, SUPER POWERS, would you care how others thought of you dancing? Hell you can just end them. Though this isn't enough That guy from Fast and Furious was there. He was there. The only good thing about the movie was Vulture appearing and that's it. At least Venom had characters to bounce off of each other and make interesting interactions.

I took Milo's lack of reaction to Morbius's transformation as a sign of his sociopathic and misanthropic tendencies. He thinks humanity is beneath him anyway, so a literal thirst for blood is a feature instead of a drawback. His coming into prison and leaving the cane for Morbius, in a similar way, is to taunt the latter as an expression of/foreshadowing how he's drunk with the power of finally feeling alive for the first time in his life.

@@PillarofGarbage Hope you're doing all right now! You remind me of this James Herriot story I read forever ago. He decided to go into work with a high fever, probably with his judgement impaired by the fever. This woman came in with her dog, she often came in with her dog when it was not sick and she was just worried, and, again, the dog was not sick. But this time, Herriot lacked all capacity to be tactful and he laughed in her face, and... She started laughing too. A delirious vet having hysterics was all she needed to convince her the dog must be okay. So sometimes, yes, working impaired can cause you to trip over something your normal brain missed, like a cadence that makes you sound extra engaged with a topic. I'll say it again: Give the license back to marvel. They seem to know how to handle Spidey villains then Sony does nowadays
@GeneralBolas
@GeneralBolas 2 жыл бұрын
They can't do that. Spider-Man license-based product is basically the only thing keeping Sony Pictures afloat. The minute they let go of it, the studio will fold and be sold off in bits. Indeed, Sony Pictures is just in a weird financial position. Sony Corp would love to sell them off, but they can't. Their deal with Marvel explicitly says that if SP gets sold, the Spider-Man rights revert back to Marvel. So the one thing that makes Sony Pictures valuable is the one thing someone looking to buy them will not get. So nobody wants to buy them, not even Disney (who is still digesting Fox and probably looking to buy Nintendo or EA to get in on videogames). So Sony Pictures is a product that can't be sold, and the only valuable thing they have is Spider-Man product. Therefore, they have to keep making them, even if they're hot garbage.

Here's my take on the scene where Morbius and Milo argue over the cure: Milo: You found a cure? Morbius: It's not a cure. It's a curse. Milo: What do you mean? Morbius: *points at a newspaper with the news on the massacre at the ship - which the nurse never went* I did that. I have become some kind of...vampire. A living vampire, so to speak. I get these episodes of bloodlust and... Milo: Can't you control it, though? Morbius: I've been trying since the incident on the boat. It's why I have been so absent in the past week. Milo: And? Morbius: It's no use. My synthetic blood helps a bit, but the time between cravings is becoming shorter and shorter. Soon, I won't be just satisfied with synthetic blood. Milo: I... see... Is it really that bad, though? Morbius: What are you saying? Of course it is! I'm a murderer because of what I created! Milo: Look, that's bad, I know. But look on the bright side, you're cured! You no longer have the shadow of death lingering over your head anymore! We just have to be careful and get a lot of donated blood. Haven't you watched any vampire shows? Morbius: This isn't TV! This is real life! No matter how careful we would be, we would slip eventually. I'm already a murderer because of this curse, I'm not letting you become one too! Milo: You ungrateful bastard! After everything I sacrificed for you! It was me who paid for all of your studies and experiments! It was my money that you used to make the synthetic blood that earn you that prize! Morbius: I never wanted that prize! And I gave back every penny back to you! Milo: After everything that I've suffered! Being look down by others! The pitying looks! Building up hope for a cure time after fucking time. Only for you to fail and break it down again and again! After all of that, now that you have finally made a cure, you're holding it away from me!? Morbius: Are you not listening!? It isn't a cure! It's a curse! Just give me time, Milo! I can give you a real cure, I know it! Milo: Time!? That's the one thing that I can't give you anymore, Morbius. I'm tired of waiting! I'm dying, Morbius! I'm getting worse every day! I don't care if I become a monster, at least I'll be alive! Morbius: I'm sorry, Milo. But I can't - I won't let you become like me. *Turns around to grab the viles of the table* Milo: *Breaks a bottle on the back of Morbius' head, knocking him out.* I'm sorry, Morbius. *Grabs the viles and leaves* But I can't wait any longer.

Matt Smith, as an actor, could've been so much better if they had set him up as a big bad for a sequel, at least we could say, "maybe the next one will be better", but instead they wanted to Spider-Man.

Thank you for seeing this and making quality fun of it so I didn't have to see it. Also, do they say verbatim differently in England? We say verr-BAY-tim here in the USA but our two linguistic pools pronounce and even use many words differently. I remember my mind being blown when I realized as a teen that things are different *to* each other in England instead of from like here. I'm not able to watch this film anyway: I didn't know how much serious childhood illness is in the film, but we just lost our almost four year old son less than two and a half years ago after thirteen months of hospitals and treatments and we just aren't willing to be traumatized over Leto's failed bat experiment. "I can look past a flawed surface layer, but there's nothing beyond it here." Great, perceptive, and very clear line. I really admire your "thought to text" circuit in your writer's brain. And your Eternals video was my first of yours and was a truly amazing point of entry. Funny: critics didn't like this movie or that movie, but there's people like you and me who could talk for hours about why Eternals was special, and if anyone would defend Morebeesss for hours, I suspect they would come across as repetitive. "He's scary and he tries to be good but he wants to be bad." Haha right Sony doesn't have rights to variants. Oh and oh yeah: you've mentioned since this you have COVID! So sorry, feel better. This helps remind me not to let my guard down. My wife's pregnant with our fourth child (remember, we lost one, so only third here), my daughter is 14 months, and my 8 year old has asthma and serious respiratory issues when he gets a cold. Thanks for the kind words! Re: verbatim, I’ve definitely heard the pronunciation you’re talking about in the U.K., but I’ve also heard ‘VER-ba-tim’. It might be down to regional variations, I’m unsure. Sadly, there’s quite a bit of content in Morbius that you might find traumatic, so I think you were likely right not to go see it - awful quality notwithstanding. On that note, I’ll try to remember content warnings in the future should I ever talk about media touching on that topic. But thanks for watching this and for the positive feedback - and good luck avoiding covid!

Might just be me, but I don't think it's as bad as people are saying it is. I enjoyed Jared Leto and Matt Smith's performances and were probably my favorite parts of the movie. The origin of both were pretty nice. I also love how they showed Morbius before becoming vampiric. The scene of him taking care of that girl was nice and added to the character. And I liked how Morbius was struggling to control the lust for blood. Kinda wish they did more with that. I also love how Morbius discovers what Milo did. It took me a bit to realize he left the cane too. Also the effect for when he's in the wind. However there are some things I dislike. 1. Milo turning into a villain. I feel like they kinda rushed it. The way Milo goes on about how Micheal ended up being better and preferred by their father figure, and being so close to a cure only for it to be denied is a good set up. They just rushed it. There should've been more scenes about their father figure continuing to talk about Morbius' accomplishments with Milo, although proud for him wanting and failing to make that figure proud. And I think there should have been a scene where he stole the cure out of spite or anger instead of him just sneaking it out. 2. The way the officers act. I can't really describe it, but I don't really think detectives act like that. I feel like they jumped to conclusions to quick or just flat out uncharacteristic 3. The romance between Morbius and the nurse woman. Nothing wrong with having it, but again it felt rush. There's really no hint that they've been together for a while if that was what they were going for. And if not, then I don't understand why the sudden need for them to be in love. They should've either enforced that they were already in a relationship or not have it in the first place. 4. The vampire/transformed look. I think they either should've done something different or touched up the look. It does look unnatural, but it also feels over the top and often times bad. Honestly I think if you fixed these problems, it would be pretty good. Hell, if it had nothing to do with Marvel it'd be a decent story. I personally give it like a 5/10. I've definitely seen worse. *cough cough* Crimes of Grindlewald *cough cough*

This movie puts infinity war to shame, I cannot express how mad I am you didn't objectively give it credit nor waited for the extended cut in which he has a full 20 minute scene naked having sex with a giant bat and eventually saying the extremely philosophical line "It's morbin' time" as he and the bat climax.

I havent seen this movie and dont even know if ill ever bother (which is weird since i have a guilty love for both venom movies, ik im terrible) but why on earth do they not even give him a comic accurate look. Even if you hate venom you cant deny the look for the character is chefs kiss, yet morbius wears a weird black suit or hoodie, when a weird little spandex outfit with a big v and little cape would be so goofy and hilarious, also why the fuck did they give him a weird little beard, it looks so weird in vampire form jusy give him the little goatee

Man, someone really wants me to buy a Jeep Grand Wagoneer. I mean, I could buy a decent three-bedroom house for less where I live, so maybe they should fine-tune their marketing. I don't know if it's the KZbin dolts in advertising or just an algorithm, but maybe a multiple choice question before a video isn't the way to target potential customers, and maybe saturating every video I watch with ads for a vehicle I will never be able to afford isn't going to sell me a $90,000 jeep. I watch KZbin and I don't pay for cable TV. Figure it out, dude.

I get that Sony is trying to cash in on the new interest in super movies but they had a lot of time make something good and just settled. It’s unfortunate.

14:46 tbf I am not a NYC detective either. But I am pretty sure most detectives in that moment after seeing a guy who allegedly needs crutches to walk around suddenly turns into god damn chuck norris bodying multiple other cops in front of you, starts moving at inhuman speeds and making inhuman jumps...yea I think most would try to shoot him in the head.

My fave part is that Jared Leto was an insufferable, annoying prick constantly doing his method "acting" and generally being a fucking pain, including taking so long on bathroom breaks because he insisted on using the crutches until they got a member of the crew to take him in a wheelchair. But my heart was happy because at the London premiere one of my friends (who also uses crutches) told him he had used them wrong. The whole film.

I'm so glad I did not see it. It does not interest me at all and feel bad for you having to endure the film. I'm not a fan of Sony doing these kinds of films. Its weird and so strange. Morbius just doesn't look interesting to me. I'm sorry you had to suffer.

I went in expecting trash, turned out p alright I think, a nice lil popcorn flick... until those post-credit scenes. I fucking hated that post-credits, especially given we got less then two minutes of Venom in No Way Home. LESS THAN TWO MINUTES IN A BAR.

OK so morbius' makes sense for a Marvel property. Like in their universe, latent super power genes react differently when science shit happens I'm not even kidding... fun fact: spider man's power work the exact same as this version this. Magic blood
