In lieu of the typical pinned Patreon link, please consider directing any spare change to The Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.net/ - Blue Beetle is, obviously, far from a perfect film. I’ve talked about its limitations myself, in previous videos - as have a great many other reviews/analyses here on KZbin. The point here isn’t to argue otherwise - it’s to look at the way a film is contorted, misrepresented, and nitpicked mercilessly into a launching pad for anti-fan content & narratives. Footnotes: (8:43) 1: It’s also worth noting that Jaime’s Blue Beetle was created concurrently with 616 Spidey’s Iron Spider suit (both appeared for the first time in February 2006, with the similarities, the ‘arms’ and the nanotech basis, being unveiled for each character over the next couple of months). There is truth in the claim that Blue Beetle (as a character) was partially a response on DC’s part to Spider-Man, but it's _not_ true in the way it’s being leveraged here - accompanied by the the visual/tech comparisons to MCU Spidey, the true claim is being saddled with some sneaky subtextual baggage. (21:46) 2: Fans tend to protest claims that Mauler has any role in the alt-right/anti-woke pipeline by denouncing points like the ones I mention here as ‘guilt by association’ - and, solely because I know that otherwise I’ll get approximately ten billion comments on the matter, I think it’s worth laying out why I think that’s a silly response (and why the section from 21:24 to 22:00 is in this video). Guilt - nor any judgement on character or beliefs - is not what’s being asserted. What’s in question when people make this point is whether or not Mauler is playing a part in that radicalising algorithmic funnel. It doesn’t matter if he’s ‘guilty’ or not. It doesn’t matter if you’ve spoken to him and he seems politically moderate. It doesn’t matter if he _is_ politically moderate! It doesn't matter what his _intentions_ are - it matters what he does, where he does it, and who he does it with. If you grant that such a pipeline exists, and if you grant that Nerdrotic, Geeks + Gamers, et al. are part of it, then you must also grant that by repeatedly appearing on podcasts like FNT, and by having FNT’s regulars on EFAP (to say nothing of the way EFAP appearances have helped build the profile of some of the anti-woke neophytes), Mauler - as a personality, not as the sum of his main channel videos - is a _de facto_ part of that pipeline. A minor part, perhaps, but a part nonetheless. As a well-established personality in his own right, appearances draw more viewers, thus better analytics, thus more recommendations, and so on. Now, if your objection to all that is that _none_ of these characters are part of the pipeline, nor even EFAP guests such as Sargon, then congratulations - you’re not a hypocrite! But you _are_ an idiot.

The fact that he called his truck a Taco, may be because he is Mexican, or because it is a Toyota TACOma. Taco is a common nickname for the truck. I used to work at a Toyota dealership, and we had plenty of people call them Tacos, because when you are talking about a thing over and over again, it’s pretty common to give it a nickname.

For those who don't know: almost 4 years ago Nerdrotic invited an open white supremacist Bowlestrek. A guy who has said this gem: "In good old days cities like London and Toronto were mostly white, but now they have become a victim of a massive social experiment. The goal of that experiment, is to wipe out the white Christians. For a review (read: a conversation about how the Jewish plot has destroyed the show) of Doctor Who.

That review also featured a strong contender for the stupidest lie ever told on his channel. Bowlestrek said (to which Nerdrotic nodded) that the episode "Fugitive of the Joodoon" has a white man as the villain. That statement is so categorically, unapologetically untrue I have no idea how he came up with this. That kind of interpretation is so brain-dead I actually doubted if those two idiots even knew English.

No, Heroes can kill. The concept that "A hero must never kills" is only a thing maybe since the Batman Nolan Trilogy, I don't see why Mr.A, Harry Callahan, Doomguy, La Gardère, Herakles or even Zatoichi are lesser heroes than Spider-Man because they have killed their ennemies. Now that you disagree with their philosophy is one thing, but saying outright that it goes against being Heroic is a bit too far. Especially that Spider-Man had killed ennemies (Morlun, Digger, Green Goblin or Shathra), granted most of those were during the JMS run, but Stracz gave a reasoning, those were predators wanting to "consume" Spidey and he had to slay them to survive, doesn't make him less Heroic.

It's like Superman, I love Superman, Kal El will do his best to spare someone, but understand that, by moment, that's the only option left. There's a great scene showing that in Superman/Batman : Apocalypse, Supes and the Amazons fight a Legion of Doomsdays, and he freezes all of them to then erase them with his optic blast. So, you don't care about this movie, your dad watched it because he's Mexican, and he won't watch anything similar ever again. This is called pandering. Will your father now watch every superhero movie, did he become a fan? No. Did the movie lose a ton of fans overt his? Definitely. I guess you are right, you father is happy, but the company is net negative. *Applause*. YOu have no idea what you are talking about. @@longislandicedtea6323 Respect for anyone not like you needing to be earned by reaching some arbitrary goalpost that NEVER gets applied to those who are like you. You see it with how people talk about gay people, trans people, every ethnicity of people that exists, used in every social situation there is. It's always "give a basic level of human respect to people implicitly until they prove themselves not worthy of your respect." Except when, say, bigots see a black person move into their neighborhood or a trans person shopping in the same supermarket. Then they always apply a hypercritical eye on them, about the value of their person and the level of decency they deserve. They're not valid in spaces frequented by the bigot or in social dynamics until they've proven themselves via special treatment to the bigot (they need to show more respect from the start than the bigot shows them) or otherwise assimilated into the bigot's lifestyle. The bigot mistake treating someone poorly until they've reached some usefullness barrier for _them_ as somehow the proper exchange of respect and human decency. So in the above's example, it's "latinos won't be seen as mere delivery staff if they make sure to present themselves exceptionally. It's the _normal_ way they present themselves that's the issue!" This of course ignores how common it is for latinos presenting in any manner of elite or eurocentric ways to still be assumed to be labor, just more friendly/professional labor presented that way for their comfort. And of course it's inherently wrong because nothing about presenting as yourself becomes inherently less worthy of respect if you're latino. That speaks to the bigot viewing what they see as latino as negative, it's their perception that's the only error, the only thing that's harmful.

I am a Mexican-American nerd and a big fan of superheroes. Blue beetle (Jaime reyes) was one of my favorite superheroes as a kid, just behind Spider-man and Static shock. I was first introduced to him in the cartoon Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Since seeing him as a kid, I have read some of his comics and enjoyed his portrayal in Young Justice. I even remember in middle school drawing my own superhero who was basically a rip-off of Blue Beetle named Red Ant. I went to see the Blue beetle movie in theaters and I enjoyed it. Not the best movie ever, or anything, but I still had fun and enjoyed myself. Very funny, decent action and some touching moments, especially with the dad. Id probably rate the movie as a 7/10. In my personal opinion, I think the Hispanic rep in the movie was fairly accurate. I think the characters felt like real people and some of the struggles they faced are real struggles that many real Hispanic people deal with, including racism, gentrification and being undocumented. Jaime's dad, in some ways, reminds me of my own dad, who also immigrated to America to make a better life for his family. I can relate to the pressure Jaime feels to try to make it big because of the sacrifices his family made for his sake. Jaime's uncle in the movie also reminded me of people I've met in real life. And of course, Jaime's Nana was awesome. She was very funny and cool. Overall, I can tell that the creators of this movie know their stuff in regards to Mexican American culture. This isn't like a documentary, of course, but it felt like an authentic portrayal to me. Of course, this is just my opinion. Some people might feel differently and thats ok.

I would really love to see an adaptation of Jessica Cruz (Green Lantern), not only is she an awesome character that has been criminally underused in screen adaptations, but even from a cynical big-corpo "inclusivity is profitable" perspective, she's like a diversity triple score shot: She is Hispanic, but not so immersed in the culture to alienate all the racists (except those who take offense to brown skin), she's a woman, but her stories have little to no focus on women's issues, and while she's not overly feminine in behavior or appearance, she's also not so masculine to drive away all the misogynists who are scared by "strong female characters", and she has mental health issues in the form of general anxiety disorder and agoraphobia, which pretty much anyone can relate to, as feelings of uncertainty around other people or new situations is a fairly universal human experience.

MauLer is not a comic reader, plus he's a gigantic hypocrite. So I won't take what he says as valuable, his essay on "Objectivity" was a good insight, but he seemed to have never realised how much what he said in it applies to himself. Comic's biggest genre was horror before Comic Code, heck, Lee & Ditko wrote horror until they had to put Spider-Man because of said code, and Spider-Man always played a lot with it. Most of his first ennemies are typical comic horror bad guys, lizard people, martians, creepy old man, a man hunting other men. You cannot get rid of those. Plus you'll always need a little bit of horror. It's like Empire Strike Back's director said : "Because we are doing basically a fairy tale, you need horror. You need it so the child will understand there are stakes and the Hero might loose the fight."

My favourite response is to ask such people what was "woke" about Rings of Power that doesn't also apply to House of the Dragon. See there's a bit of a problem for the anti-wokes in that House of the Dragon was popular and successful... so it hurts their message to describe it as "woke", but all the same complaints can be applied to both. Strong female lead, mentions of sexism and class divide, black actors playing characters that were originally white. Both shows had all of these attributes, but apparently only one is "woke". In the end, of course, it comes down to one having good writing and the other not having good writing... but they can't acknowledge that because then you can't say Rings of Power failed due to being "woke".

@@BillMan5000 True. Though, in fairness, I'd say HotD is overall more faithful to its source material than RoP is. I don't even despise Rings of Power the way most do, though I do agree its inferior to HotD (and PJ's Lord of the Rings movies, obviously).

The most hilarious thing about Gary is as well as getting his information along with Doomcock from 4chan he is a failed comic store owner who blames "Woke" comics for his bankruptcy not that he was probably scaring people away with his ranting bullshit that was actually a parody in Space back in 2000 "You didn't understand Star Wars You Weren't there" Gary is also a Quanon Believer along with Krissy Mayr who is constantly dogwhistling that all of Hollywood is run on child napping, really the funniest of the sad collection of broken toys on the stream is Heel Vs Baby-face who is a failed Writer who made a big deal about his failed job applications to the BBC claiming it's Wokism not he's a bad writer it's actually something you see with alot of anti woke film reviewers the hate is usually linked to a an IRL failure.

Conspiracy is the easy out for people who don’t want to face their own failures. Didn’t know heel was a failed writer but honestly most of these people being failed creatives who go alt right because they don’t want admit they suck sounds right. How else does an “expert in medieval weapons” write a book where the main protagonist is unironically a rapist but it’s ok because he’s really sowwy about it.

I'm glad the general public reacted the way they did to that Nerdrotic video. They've been a blight on the website that survives by remaining just obscure enough that the moderate masses don't cancel them. The type of people that search for those videos have no interest good faith media criticism - they just want to hear the sounds like they like to hear while playing a game in another monitor.

I'm confused how they thought this movie was woke?? I thought they loved traditional heteronormative family values? I thought they loved Chri stianity? I thought they loved it when the guy kisses the girl at the end? I thought they loved male leads? (Oh its because they're brown) And also how does he consider One piece the best show of 2023 when the whole theme of the show is explicitly about raycism, classism, an extremely diverse cast and has a few gender swapped and race swapped characters (all things these people hate)?? Oh it's because Blue Beetle didn't perform well while One piece did. I just know if One piece didn't get as many views, all the thumbnails would be "JUAN PIECE WOKE FAILURE" with a picture of inaki godoy as a racist Mexican stereotype.
