Slept on the Wirral's most haunted hill // Bidston Hill

September 2022. I spent a morning exploring Bidston Hill, and a night bivvying on the hillside. Had issues with my Rode mic in the night, with Bidston Hill said to be notorious for causing electronic malfunctions. The vibes up here can get heavy, I recommend you experience them for yourself.

theres nothing spooky about biddy hill i lived in the observatory for a few years worked at tam oshanta farm biddy hill was my backyard i used to flipflop all over ther hill in the summer nights, i used to like sittin on the roof on bonnynight watching all the fireworks, loving the vids kidda keep on keeping on bob and mr tao xxthat poor girl got murded when i was living ther found her body right by the ob, the bizzies where there for yonks it was horrilble

I was walking past the observatory by myself one day, visiting some family friends. I felt like I was being watched by something and when I got to the brick wall beside it I heard what sounded like rustling on the other side. It followed me as I walked, so I ended up sprinting onto one of the paths out of the forest. I've heard these noises since, a few times I've been down there alone.

Hi and sorry for the late reply! There are definitely creepy vibes up the hill, day or night! There were areas at night I felt like I didn't want to hang around in for too long. Just a weird uneasy feeling.

The third rose nearly two hundred feet into the air above a clump of underwood-a giant of a vegetable, with a red column as big as a cottage, and a wide shadow around in which a company could have manoeuvred. It was conspicuous far to sea both on the east and west and might have been entered as a sailing mark upon the chart. But it was not its size that now impressed my companions; it was the knowledge that seven hundred thousand pounds in gold lay somewhere buried below its spreading shadow. Great video!. Sorry I’m late to the party here. We went with the school a few times (st George’s in wallasey) an they took us in the mill an we had to tick off all the carvings that you show in the vid and some others. There is some old graffiti inside the mill if I remember. One thing they didn’t show us but Mum an Dad, Mum was local so knew of all the stories, was the carvings that depict actually sacrifices. On one of the cliff walls there, there is an image of someone being struck with a knife and things of that nature. Obviously the school didn’t show us those ones 😂 One interesting thing I remember teachers pointing out was there were lots of small man made Swiss cheese holes around the mill. It was explained that some of them were referred to as cauldrons an things (which they may have doubled as) but they were actually so folks could make their own lead shot for their pistols and rifles. I can’t remember if they explained why there was so much shot manufacturing going on?!. Also the local hall that was up there (bidston hall), was so popular with the Earl of Royden that when he later purchased it, he had it moved piece by piece to his estate (it’s the hillbark hotel now), it has (what some believe) a Jacobean fireplace of sir Walter Raleigh’s house. Also when the building was sited at bidston it is said Lord Stanley had a group of actors come up including young William Shakespeare, but he thought the show was pants 😂. Sorry I’m going on a bit here Will but I hope this of interest. A few years back they took a load of voluntary blood donations up Bidston, Arrowe Park way an it came back there was a lot of Viking DNA still in the area, a high concentration. Quite a few from that kneck of the woods (including relatives), suffer from that condition the actor Bill Nighy has were the little finger an then one next to it lock up due to tendon issues, this is hereditary illness from the Vikings. Anyway sorry that was lengthy, keep up the good work 👍

Hello Adam mate, loved all the information you shared! Thanks for that. I remember similar with school, think I went with Somerville and we done the same, all sat around the hill with clipboards. And there's definitely a sense there that the real history is hidden or lost. What I talked about in the vid is barely scratching the surface really, may go back one day and see what else I can find. The hill is a weird place with all the carvings, ome of which seem to have vanished in the last 30-40 years but elder relatives recall in detail what can only really be described as Satanic carvings. And they date back hundreds of years. Defo a hidden dark history in my humble opinion! And I have Frankby on the list for possible future vids. Bidston Hall/Hillbark is one of the most excitement-inducing reasons to go to explore the place. It is always great to meet a fellow Wirral history hunter. Thanks for commenting, I appreciate it!

Hi Will another great video, I lived on the Ford estate from 4yrs old till I was 15, on 8th Avenue, Herondale..Bidston hill was like our backyard, was always up there especially in the hot summer holidays, under the canopies of the trees, from running around the rocks under the bridge next to the windmill,like goats,haha, to what we called the penny slot, you would start from the top by the observatory and climb or jump from tree to tree or jump onto the bushes and you had to make your way to the bottom without touching the ground, saw many injuries and gouges into all parts of the body from branches etc, then we made massive swings, made hideouts, and yeah we remember the witches steps, heard of another tale of a banshee and many Halloween satanic rituals being done. There's also Bidston Manor and tamoshanter farm, There was also supposed to be another sandstone carving of dinosaur footprint, not 100% on that one though, we did class days out from the school down the road Ballantyne. Yeah I loved biddy Hill as we called it, was a lot more to see when I was a kid talking over 40yrs ago now, the treeline has obscured a lot of it now, as for the Pete boggy marshes am sure the heathland would unearth some treasures from days gone by. Hello Wayne mate, thanks again for the support, means a lot. Loved reading about your memories of Biddy Hill. It's such a rich, atmospheric place, the sort of place you can experience something new each time you visit! When I filmed this vid, I went in the day with a list of carvings and tried to hunt them all out, but couldn't find them all. The ones which interested me the most were the Norse Sun and Moon deities, crazy to think of these Norse-Gael settlers using the hillside as a sort of astrological compass, with the carvings aligned to sunrises and sunsets. So much lost knowledge... Also tried to steer a bit clear of the Satanic stuff ha! Met a man who told me a story of driving under the bridge on Vyner Road late at night, and seeing a large group of white-robed figures on the road. Stuff like that makes the hairs stand up on the neck! The voices I heard in the woods when I was setting up the tarp camp, I ask myself now, was it people? Or disembodied voices?! No way of knowing, but spooky!

Oh wow! Brilliant video with plenty of interesting info.... HOWEVER.... I DO NOT KNOW HOW THE HECK YOU MANAGED TO SLEEP UP THERE ALL NIGHT, BY YOURSELF! And for me to say that is saying something as I actually live ON THE HILL..... (the sandstone cottage , literally a few feet from the Sun Goddess.... Well that wud be me 😂 hiii 👋😁. I've been here since 2004, so 18 yrs now. The rustling of wild animals roaming through the bushes past midnight, the "eery echos" accompanied by the whistling of the wind as it whips and weaves between the very many majestically sized oak trees, has become.... Somewhat of a second nature to me now. I no longer freeze on the spot from every other sound. Infact, every now and again, on special astromical occasions, such as that of the most recent Blood moon, I will walk up to the top of the hill at 2 / 3 am, just to see it at its brightest. I always feel safe as I know the hill like the back of my hand by now! Otherwise.... No chance wud I be roaming around up there alone, in the dark... Never mind campingout there!!! Just noooooo, too scary. I can't belive you actually did it.... You're either insanely brave or just insane!!! 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂. Really did enjoy this video though. Ill look forward to the nxt. 😊❤️

Couldn't find the Moon deity though, any idea where that one is? Are the cottages made from local stone? Funny that as the Wirral's most famous band The Coral brought out an album called "Magic and Medicine back in the 2000s with songs about witchcraft and spooky tales. I'd image that they frequently visited places such as this.

You are not the only one! I have heard many similar stories from unrelated people. I might go back to this area in a future video. at 515 the older mill was the site of a airraid gun in the war not a mill there used to b a little hut that would lead to the airraid shelters under the hill just by it, its just a concrete slab now,theres a carving of a man being hung on a horse just by the ob but it nearly buried now u can only see a little of it 55 years ago u could see it all, you didnt mention the optical telegraph that was up there,we was told it got its name from bidders hill as the mill would mill the whatever then sell the flour to bidders outside not sure on that one though

Very cool information Bob, I appreciate it. So much to see there, the carvings are particularly interesting but when I went there to film there had recently been fires on the hillside and a lot of it was covered in soot and burnt debris so was hard to find the carvings just going off directions I'd found online. Also find the surrounding areas of Bidston Hall, Bidston old village, and Flaybrick Cemetery of great interest. Since making this vid, I've had several people tell me crazy stories about the Hill, one in particular who swears he encountered robed figures in the road whilst driving under the bridge on Vyner Road North late at night. That is creepy! There are many similar stories about the place. I met a man who told me he was driving up Vyner Road North a couple of years ago, late one night, under the bridge, and disturbed a group of robed figures in the road. He said they all just turned and stood staring at the car, before a couple of them started to approach. Of course he high-tailed it out of there! Bidston Hill 'plays' the volcano in Jules Verne's 1874 novel the Mysterious Island and it is also Spy-glass Hill in Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel Treasure Island.

When you mentioned the windmill turning out 100lbs of flour a time, I immediately thought of the fruit loaf that could be made with that. The best vid yet, Bill. I'd forgotten how gorgeous it is up there, its undoubtedly the nicest spot on the Peninsula, with only the wrecked stolen motorbikes and bits of wank mag strewn about to betray the fact that its up next to the North End. Its refreshing watch vids with descriptions and researched facts, and as usual you've done your homework beforehand so nice one. In the 60's there was a pair of Goshawks nesting up Biddy Hill, and birdwatchers came from all over the country to twitch at them. I think they done one during the bad freeze in '67/'68, never to return. I'd heard tell of people digging peat up there when I was a kid, so there will be trenches, like. Margery Hare was one of the unfortunate midwives and herbalists that the church and state decided couldnt do what doctors could do without the devil's help, and her disappearance is probably a case of her "vanishing in a plume of smoke", as it were. Youre a lot braver than me sleeping out up there, Bill, its a wonder you didn't get your balls caught between the trees. In all your walk toward the camera shots, you still walk like you've just received bad news. Perfect bush vid, Bill, thanks for that

Remember going up biddy with a mate in the 80s it was pitch black , and we spotted someone just sitting looking towards Liverpool on their own, we walked behind them and they never flinched, never looked round to see who was behind them , never moved a muscle, it freeked us out, it had nothing to do with the mushrooms we'd taken..... honest.😉😜

The Wirral looks like one giant enchanted garden with woodland, it's simply a glorious place. I'm wondering have any top films been filmed there? You could even devote one entire video to those Satanic areas along with the witch places. I was feeling scared for you when you decided to set up camp. I remember watching a documentary plus a film about a place I think is in China a giant forest where people go to commit suicide. There's been many sightings of entities in the forest which is also known for witchcraft and satanic ritual activities.

hey will I grew up on the ford estate and when i was younger I was on the hill and saw a fire and weird dancing at the Windmill so I get you when you say about satanic worship goin on ther it was summer time when i saw them and i was about 10 years old . scary innit mate :)

Thanks for the comment, it is definitely a risky place, I was on edge most of the night! In the end I was so tired I just slept on the bench and thought, "if I get caught I get caught!" I didn't though thankfully. One of the best sunrises I've ever seen. When I was sat waiting for the sun, the boxer Sean 'Masher' Dodd came walking up with his dog and sat down on the benches with me. Ended up having a conversation with him for over an hour then had to run away so I wasn't late for work. A very cool place!

At the time of making this particular video, I had been using a small outdoors mic which plugged into my phone, but my phone fell over on West Kirby beach one night and got submerged! When I made this Bidston vid, I was still trying to use the mic but it was giving off odd crackles and cutting in and out, so I've stopped using it now. Started just using my phone, and using a better editor to try to enhance the audio that way! Will be making sure to turn it up a few extra dB in future vids!
