Oct 2022. I spent the day exploring the Thurstaston area of the Wirral, and the night atop Thor's Stone, on Thurstaston Common. This area of the Wirral is steeped in history, and I really enjoyed tracing some of it. I also said "Thurstaston" so many times, I gave myself a lisp. Respect the land, leave no trace, all fully adhered to. Recorded with a Samsung Galaxy S20.

Really interesting. Born in Pensby in 65 and lived there until 83 used to enjoy the rock, me and my mates sometimes went there. Wow it’s been over 50 years since I last sat in that dip on top of the Thors Stone were you bivvied. I used to call that dip my flying saucer as I used to pretend it was a space ship. All those grooves cut in the rock by hundreds of thousands of Wirral kids feet over the years incredible that there is anything left of the rock. I think I’d be scared to see how much it has shrunk over the decades, I’ll bet it would be noticeable if there were a series of photos taken at the same spot. Thanks for this and well done on your research, the Wirral is just full to inspire many a young persons mind. Keep on doing this stuff mate it’s great.

Thanks Chris, I loved reading your memories of the place, can only imagine the fun you must have had up there, lucky to grow up with such beauty and wonder on our doorsteps! I'm glad you enjoyed the vid, I will endeavour to get round to looking into a Pensby vid in time. I'll first have to pluck up the courage to say "... and in 1229, the place was recorded as Penisby" on camera though, haha! Thanks again, Will

Not Farr is frankby cemetery, of which, there lies a fishing lake. The 3 times I night fished here, never caught nowt and a strange cold fog would hang on one side of the water. You could hear sound differences to, between the night and day. Stranger even still is the environment around the witches cave, just off the path of the Wirral way, near the old station that's now gone. I bet you can't camp there all night without quacking your undercrackers. But ! If you do find the witches caves, have a look on the eroded beach front, at night with a black light torche. Happy Jem hunting! It was what the Vikings were up to and why they fought so hard to stay here and they did. The wirral is catacombed with tunnels, dug by them, looking for it. It was everywhere back then, all kinds of it and still is in some places.

Nice one John! Frankby is a place which interests me, defo somewhere I'm gonna get out and experience fully eventually. Some interesting info here, might need a map for these caves! Witches Caves sound epic, I did camp at the Dungeon cave, that place had some similar weird happenings through the night like you describe. It is up a wooded hill a bit, with a really small stream running downhill at the bottom of the woods. When I was there I heard a woman's voice carrying on the wind from down by the stream, humming some kind of tune in a soft tone. Needless to say, I hunkered down deeper in my bivvy bag and didn't go out to see what was about! That whole side of the Wirral is mystical. Will

Hi Mike, an interesting experience you had for sure! I'd agree with what you say. A few weeks ago I was back here myself. Watched the sun set from the hilltop, the winds were incredible, ended up surfing in the wind on the outcrops lol! I spent a bit of time in the woods on the Royden Park side this time, and there are definitely energies all around the place. Walking through the trees, the energy permeates the place. I didn't stop, but I reckon if you stopped and really focused in the area, it wouldn't take long to draw something in. It seems we are on the same page with this stuff mate, tis why I go outdoors, to experience the vibes and encounter the energies of places. Going to start including the topics more in future vids too! Thanks for the comment Mike

Hi will, nice video and nice to jog my memoirs, I've been in and around most areas of the wirral and research regarding our wirral pastimes, I am a metal detectors and have learned so much more about our local wirral history than I ever did through all my years at school,withe the Celtic,viking, roman,Scandinavian,norse, saxon,Georgian,Edwardian and elizabethan eras we have so much history on our doorstep, I have found some hammered coins, Elizabeth 1st c:1567, Thurstaston. Roman sestertius bronze coin, Chester, roman double headed snake clasp, deeside, I am in and around storeton fields researching the battle of bruanburgh battle between the vikings/cells against the English,c:937. Also shotwick village, all documented in the doomsday book,. Keep up the videos and research, if I find anything interesting I'll pop a message on your site.

Hi Wayne, and thanks for the kind words. That is really interesting what you're talking about, I love exploring the history of these areas! Do you do metal detecting regularly? I find it crazy what you can find in a place when you look really closely. Some of these places I've known my whole life, but when you spend a few hours digging, there are always new things to discover. I will be doing a Brunanburh vid eventually, just got a bit more research to do first! Keep in touch mate, would love to know how you get on with your metal detector in these ancient places. Will

@WillMcCool yeah as and when I can, I work away a lot so when I'm home and I get a few hours to detect I will, I have been researching possible links from viking settlements to areas linked names that we have surrounding the wirral and to the shoreline of Thurstaston and the battle of bruanburgh and the location around storeton. I have some permissions on storeton fields and am hoping to unearth some artifacts that put such an event linked to the battle etc. Then there's the quarry and links to the Romans. But anything I find is interesting and gives you info on the history of the wirral and its inhabitants...I will keep you posted if I find anything...

Proper coat that, Bill. The last time I was up there, I was looking at the decades of inscriptions, and oddly, one of them reads "theres lumps of it round the back". Excellently researched, as always, Billy lad; One of the facts you promised to mention, but didnt, was that when the Vikings attempted to land on what is now known as Harrison Drive, they got legged by the LEBB, and thats how they ended up landing on the banks of the Dee instead. I had always thought it odd that there had been no supernatural or fortean activity recorded in the area around the stone, because every time Ive been nearby to it during the night hours, I've purely shit me hook.

I know that names have real purposeful meaning. My name, from my research (though very minimal, admittedly), means "Thors Stone" also. [Dustin-Dorstien-Thorstien-Thors Stone]... Or something like that, (again, apologies for any spelling or grammatical errors) My question is, as most names of ancient and even modern times have meaning... would my name, Dustin, (Thors stone) have important implications, stories, fairytales, mythology, historical or theological implications, either biblical, pagan, mystic, historic, ect?? I only ask as I have an overwhelming curiosity what my name REALLY means, or implies?
@WirralWill
@WirralWill Жыл бұрын
Hello Dustin mate, and thanks for stopping by. As to your question 😅 you seem to have it mostly worked out yourself! There is also a really old English form of the name, as Tustin. You're 100% spot on with the Thor's Stone reference. Think the direct translation would be 'Thunder Stone'. Pretty cool, but I've no idea about the mythology side of it. Hope this little info helps 🙏
@Corey87
@Corey87 Жыл бұрын
@@WirralWill yes, I've seen the variation Tustin, along with several others. My question was really involving your purpose, job, calling, destiny, ect in life. I ask because all biblical names were the same among people and there "esoteric destinies/jobs/callings". I know I suppose it may seem silly to some, but with what you've learned about that name, I was looking to see if you had any valueble insights.. If not that's fine, just a daydream/supposition that I'm enthralled with the thought of :)

Hello, and thanks for the kind words! You are lucky to have such natural beauty on your doorstep! Just the whole of the west Wirral coast... what a place! I've had several experiences on the Common and around the Stone. If you stand in the wooded hollows, amongst the sandstone cliffs after dark, you can feel strong energies, almost on the verge of manifesting. I couldn't tell whether good or bad energy, but I don't think it would take much to draw it in. I may go back to a particular spot in the woods and see if I can find out more! Also, I would say that there were defo some sort of ceremonies carried out either at the foot of the stone on the West side or at the top on that side. Just a feeling I got whilst sat taking it all in for several hours! You may think I sound crazy, Will

Apologies for the delay, I’ve only just seen your reply 😊 I’ve definitely experienced things too around there. Most recently, I sat for a while against a tree looking at Thors rock. I think the north side as we had walked from Hillbark hotel way. I felt transported somehow. The energy felt very peaceful and natural. Irby Heath (opposite the cricket club) has wonderful energy. In the 1950’s when my Dad and his brothers were little an old man lived in that wood for years in a sort of tree house. He used to tell the children all kinds of stories about local history and wildlife. Thank you again for your brilliant videos 🙏

@@Lovedayperiwinkle Hey and sorry I forgot to reply to this sooner! Love your stories of the energies, those are the experiences I look for when I'm out. It is interesting, I would say there is definitely a different vibe on the North side from the South. The South side is the one people climb, and there isn't an inch that hasn't been carved. The North side overhangs and casts a shadow, has a little moss on it but isn't as weathered. Such a cool place! The old man in the wood is a beautiful memory, tis sad that you don't find characters like that anymore. Will

@@WirralWill Over 35 years ago there was a glade in a wooded area of the heath that was alive with birds and butterflies in the summer. There was certainly a mystical atmosphere about it. Then one year the trees were gone. I asked a park Rangers, whom I knew, what had happened and was told the trees and bushes were ripped out to allow more area of heather heathland to establish.
