Thought it was pronounced "mord-heim", but whatever floats your boat. IIRC the Skaven had access to the most heroes, which are key to finding more wyrdstone and getting more coin, so fill our your warband with all the heroes, even at the expensive of not having a ton of wargear (with the exception of helmets, I didn't take any armor). Black Skaven will usually become the heavy melee hitters (I was partial to flails, even better to couple that with the +1 S potion or relavant Strength skill) and I've had a couple Night Runners turn into very deadly shooter (get a couple attacks and the knife/star throwing skill). Take a Sorcerer and hope you get "Children of the Horned Rat" for free rats...always a good ablative shield for your heroes, or to engage the enemy and knock them down, while your hero goes in for the kill (sadly they can't climb). Starting with a Rat Ogre is a real gamble, since most beginning warbands don't have much that can wound it (other than lucky mass missile fire, a Vampire or a Possessed); it's great early but when warband ratings increase and folks get better weapons, Rat Ogres become a liability. Great game, they need to re-release or support it again.

You make some valid points: take as many heroes as you can and find enough fodder to shield for them. Equipment is a luxury early on, unless you play a warband that allows extra cash or your heroes are good enough to take advantage from them. Like higher BS or STR to deliver those killing blows. Typically you want a high number in your warband so you don't have to start taking those leadership tests to route with the first casualties.
