In my opinion, having fewer online guides is a good thing, in some respects. It means that you SHOULD just go and play and try things out and see what works and what doesn't. That to me is way more fun than theory crafting and copy-pasting a list.

I've started collecting bolt action very recently and have quite a small budget. After a small bit of research, I've found I can make a technically functional army with a single box of infantry. Using just this one box, I've made a 662 point Fallschirmjager army, and I'm planning on getting a support group next

I'd love for you and your mates to get stuck into some campaign games, it's the next step from 1000 point pick up games. Trying to unpick a line of bunkers and mine fields with a three to one advantage. It's the best.

I love my Guard but the tournament scene is getting to the point where I think it’s time for a break. Don’t get me wrong, I love tournaments but realizing Guard aren’t getting any support and the meta is dominated by moneyhammer pro players is getting to be a bore. Maybe bolt action is worth a look.

Had to laugh about the "in your first two games you'll get relatively light causities" comment, in my first couple of games I'd lost almost all my men by turn two. It's very possible with some terrible luck and my tactial genius.

As both an imperial guard and WW2 historicals (mostly flames of war) player, just need to tell you how much I love you. Keep being you. My two favorite wargaming Brits, one's yelly ones turn the volume up, I'd love to see y'all play bolt action against each other

One of things that made me a bit hesitant in jumping into bolt action was actually the fact that it is a smaller game, I like the feel of a company or multiple platoon sized engagement, then I learned about tank war. And I'll say the system works well and is smooth even at higher points values. The Rulebook even has a section for that in the appendix regarding the ODL rule which makes activations matter even more, and with the tank war supplement you can run armored platoons, and running 2 platoon games of 2000 points has been a lot of fun, manouverability still plays a large role, and often times you see large concentrations of troops fighting while there's several smaller skirmishes around the board. This is especially fun in attack and defense missions where each player is looking for an opening to either fill or exploit. All in all It's been a breath of fresh air compared to 40k in it's current broken state.

K47 needs rules for custom walkers. I also don’t know how they made a game with mechs and the Japanese only get 2. One of them is a flat out German mech?! What is that crap?!

@@jsizzlesaurusrex so there is a comunity rule set out there for BA to make your own vehicles (experiment/late war stuff) and I know some people have been using that sort of to build there own custom stuff in konflikt. it just involves alot of comparing various difrent vehicles, like at one point I figured out the point to add a tesla cannon to an AB41 and a semovente 75/34.

i heavily recommend the wargames atlantic resistance plastics, so cheap. You'll need some bases but with the price of metal models it's the way to go.

It's been so long since I played, but a fond memory was my Japanese sniper somehow plinking just the Sgt of the SS squad I targeted, possibly not even killing, as my opponent brought a tank, I belive a tiger or panther with them, and with only one pin marker, scared the squad off the field

I think the big thing with Bolt Action is that people lean more towards historically accurate (within limits of the rules) lists compared to competitive lists. Another thing people forget is that you can have multiple force selectors in your list.

Most tournaments if they allow theater selectors, which I prefer, only allow the same force selectors to help prevent cheesing things out with options.

What's your opinion, if any, on Konflict 47? From what I understand you can use most BA WW2 units alongside the scifi units

I think all you really need is a box of infantry. Inside is 30 models (40 in the case of Soviets) and bits to make officers, lmg teams, and at least one special weapons team (at, sniper, light mortar, at team). From there grab a tank and transport you like.

I have played a bit with my friends, I have Russians and some Germans that need put together. Plan on doing a US 8th Armored army next year because that's what my grandpa served in and a US 33rd Infantry force for Konflikt since I served in the National Guard unit that it became

2000 point army. I laugh at that as I got about 15,000 points for my Soviets and 18,000 points for my German and I have been only playing for about 8 months now. got 17 vehicles for my Germans and 14 vehicles for my Soviets everything from a Sd Kfz 2 Kettenkrad up to a Jagdtiger (Germans ) to a Ford GPA SEEP up to a JSU-152 for the Soviets. I usualyy run 1000 to 1250 point list for both But with just getting the Jagdtiger I might actually have to do a 1500 point list to bring it out as for inexp it is 448 points and regular it is 560 points. But I am also probably going to take it with the low fuel rule where every move or pivot you roll a dice and if it comes up a 1 then the vehicle is stuck as it ran out of fuel, if you roll a 2 then on the next turn it can move but falls under the out of fuel rule. Anything else on the D6 it still has fuel and so can move, but you get a 10% discount and so it is only 404 points inexp and 506 points regular.

I’ve always loved the look of ww2 minis and recently used 40k proxies with this game system. Feels a lot more balanced and the dice draw adds that extra suspense…my 9yr old loved it so we will be taking the plunge next payday.

You could very much do that, you'd be missing order dice but in reality it's nice to have the orders written down on dice but but not necessary. You could use anything to represent them, Same with pin markers, I know people who use bottle caps. I'd recommend a cheap second Ed rule book, it has slimmed down army codexes in the back. The cheat reference sheet from the side bar of the bolt action sub reddit is really good for new players too.

Am I the only individual who plays more than one military simulation game? I have three naval engagement games, Dystopian Wars, Black Seas Napoleonic, Steel Fleets WWI navy, plus Dread Seas and Age of Sail. We have a bunch of GW games like the Blood Bowl, the air combat thing, the bigger scale air combat thing, the big stompy robot thing, Space Hulk and an early version of the Kill team. Oh! and it is a total cack playing Apocalypse with two Warhound titans v multiple Imperial Knights, Bane Blade and Shadow Sword Then we have Flames of War desert campaigns, I am building for Alam El Halfa but also take pot shots at my son. We have hit the beach starter set for late war. We have Napoleonics French & British armies 28mm and Epic. A couple of really small scale air combat WW2 games and BFG Imperial fleet, Eldar and Chaos fleets. The point is that no one ever said you had to play the one game all the time. And our newest endeavour, Bolt Action late war, (Mainly because games don't seem to care about periods of the war and an early war unit will not have the fire power to deal). To address another issue, GW 40K is not a 2000 point game. Although that is an option, most competitive games I played were 1000 points with a roster of alternative units. Further the game rules allow for combat between 500 and 2000 points with many a stop in between. But on the 2000 point thing, I could field an army with 11 units worth 2000 points. In my BA starter set I have two vehicles, three crewed weapons, three infantry squads, a FOO & mate, a 2" mortar & mate, a CO and mate. You know, 11 units in a thousand points-ish. But it all came from the box. I gotta say though, I hate small boards. 4 x 4 does not allow for proper flanking like a 6'x 4' boards. Most players I played on that size board never new how to use the space. By the way, when you said people need a refresher when playing 40K because the same old problems crop up. I rather think that is the players. I have to admit I used to be Orks and it was fun until Phil Kelly nerfed them so badly while pricing them through the roof that I ditched them. All my favourite Ork toys were made illegal. So I switched to Eldar and I have been gaming them ever since. I learned to change with each new rule set and treated as a collection hobby so that I can set out any kind of army I like and be competitive. It is just a matter of the right tactics for the day and learning mutual support for your units for specific tactical objectives in the game. I don't see it being any different in Bolt Action.

I know I'm 3 months late but just a small note, if you want you can absolutely fit let's say 2 tanks into a list, or 100 men. Each platoon you bring has to consistent of the CO and 2 compulsory infantry troops, and otherwise includes all the restrictions you mentioned. However there is nothing stopping you from bringing more than one platoon if points permit it. This is more viable if not required when you start playing games with higher points limits but it's still technically possible in a normal 1k point game.

hint if you are interested in italians for bolt action. I really recomend you look at wargames atlantic Italian kit. it comes with a good ammount of options, I think 30 regular troopers and two models to use as HQs along with a medium machine gun. thay are also better sculpts then bolt action in my opnion. there german kit is also amazing and thay are going to be releasing some ww1 Russians that will be perfect for early ww2 Russians (or poorly supplied russians)

@@jsizzlesaurusrex my greek army/resistance force for konflikt/BA, uses the resistance mixed with stuff from the German panzer Lehr box and the Italian box. also sort of started uninentially building Bolt action greek civil war edition because I'm building my Russian force to represent the communist elements of the greek resistance.

The WWI French infantry box can work well for WWII as well. Whether as WWII French, or as Harlem Hellfighters. WA also have a box for German Panzer Lehr Division troops. Good for late war veterans or tank crew.

@@Bluecho4 thay specificly included bits in the ww1 french kit so you could use them as early ww2 troops. and I expect a similar addition for the upcoming ww1 soviets kit.

My infantry load outs are rather straight forward. Germans I take 10 man squads of either Regular or Vet Grenadiers with 4 Stg-44's, 1 LMG, and the rest with rifles or MP-40's depending on points and round it out with 2 Panzerfaust. Soviets it's 11 Veterans with 3 SMG's 1 LMG, and the rest rifles with 2 Panzerfaust and they have the tough fighter trait. Why 2 Panzerfaust? Because 5 times out of 6 the first one misses. And being a 1 and done weapon that can be devastating against something like an early M-3 Stuart with it's 2 MMG's and 2 LMG's for a total of 18 hit dice!!!!

Light casualties in turn 1 and 2? LOL I was teaching a new player how to play and lost both an 88 and a vet sniper team in the first three dice of the bag turn 1. Dude couldnt not roll 6 with his mortars, tank and sniper team. Unfortunately the hyper competitives are making their way into BA. We have a store down in South FL whose BA community thinks they are playing 40k and always bring super cheesy and/or very unhistorical armies to events outside their area. "Friendly" games with 4 vet outflanking engineer squads with flamers, multiple Ho-Ros accompanied by hordes on inexperienced spearmen. They are really spoiling the event scene for many of us.

What are your thoughts about making a list with heavy artillery instead of tanks. My grandfather served in support of the 6th army in the Philippines and it would be great to make a list that's both playable and honors his memory.

Artillery is actually better than tanks in game, what they lack in mobility they make up for in pins and hit templates

Obviously, a person who wants to deviate from 40K but wants to use their existing models should look into One Page Rules. But if you want a collect an army in a completely different game, Bolt Action is a good choice. This video is for those people.

Completely agree. OnePageRules is amazing. However they don’t really have an equivalent yet for bolt action, and I don’t know if they necessarily will. So if you’re specifically interested in the dice activation and historical battles, I think bolt action is still a good option.

@@anywhomusic Dice activation, yes, that is a concern. But you CAN replicate the historical battles to an extent using just the Human Defense Force army list from Grimdark Future. (Just without the more futuristic weapon options, like plasma).

I'm not really sure that your argument that bolt action is a much 'younger hobby' than 40k, in relation to the existence of its competitive scene, holds up in relation to the historical wargaming hobby. People have been wargaming WW2 for far longer than GW has existed and Bolt Action is just one of many rulesets for the period. Competitive gaming was always fairly unusual in historical wargames - it happens with ancients sometimes, yes, but even the very idea of using points to create army lists was a pretty alien concept in many historical wargames until fairly recently. Bolt Action is a bit of an oddity in that it tries to bridge the gap between historicals and the GW design ethos, but don't mistake 40k for a model to which it aspires.
