Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Château. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.

I agree with many of the comments, place either foam or corrugated cardboard under your paper, it’s a more forgiving background so you can press into all the areas of the block. Also, use a proper relief ink for your brayer. You can coat your brayer by using a piece of glass or plexiglass to get a nice even coating by rolling it out on that flat surface. Relief ink is tackier than regular wall paint and I feel it makes for a better print. Hope this helps😊.

Hi to both of you. Once youve glued all the bits together you could take some rice flour and wood glue to make a little paste. Cover the tabs and lines with this and when dry sand lightly until smooth. This won't crack and you can paint over it. You can then cover both sides with acrylic glass (better than perspex). You could frame them for the windows or just put hinges on and seal edges with silicon. This is where my brain is going. Either way i think they are stunning.

For the blocks of wood, you could use an acrylic varnish so that the paint doesn't soak in; and you'd get a more uniform application. And for Sara's fabric projects, perhaps you could experiment with welder's cloth as it's heat resistant.

Anna uses vinyl tiles cut out to make her designs, perhaps use that instead of timber. It could work with the machine since it can cut leather. Have you thought about making decorative name plates for each of the guest bedrooms? Or even each room in the house? Sara, have you thought about 100% wool, it is flame resistant. You can buy all different thickness of wool felt or fabric.

Sarah, I just thought of another experiment for you. This is for when you’d like to use the iron-on interfacing/backing for your fabric appliqués, to iron it on to the background fabric before embroidering (whether this is optional depends on how stiff you want it to be). Anyway, to know whether a super slick option is possible, maybe test (bowl of water at the ready and hand on the kill-switch) a piece with the iron-on stuff tacked in place. I haven’t used that for several years, but I seem to recall that you iron it onto the back of the fabric, cut it out, then dampen it to steam-iron it to where you want it. (Instructions come with it.) Of course, I don’t know whether it would go up in flames, or be too hot for the fusible stuff, or what. But maybe since full activation doesn’t take place until water/steam is involved, it could work. 🙂

So many possibilities with that laser machine. A rubber roller is definitely the way to go for putting paint on the stamp. In order to spread the paint equally on the roller, put a blob of paint on an old pane of glass and then roll the roller over that until it is covered. However, I wonder whether wood is too hard and unflexible for your purposes there. I think you need lino or another flexible material for a large stamp like yours.

Hi Sara and Stephan, now that I finally have the correct spelling of your names...my apologies on that. The wood for the stamp may have to be sealed with a varnish so that the ink or paint isn't absorbed as it is. Anna uses linoleum which doesn't absorb the medium and is easier to print by hand. Tweaking your idea should make a big difference. Mark & Scott

Very interesting, I never saw a completely open laser cutter before! Our lasers always were covered from all sides. How is it with the dust and the smoke, don’t you need a ventilation or something, so that the room doesn’t smell too much? I mean, it is just wood, but ply has glue in it, so if you use the laser for example all day long and inhale the smoke, it might be not the best for your lungs… But I love, what you create with this laser cutter, beautiful designs! Really great! (Sorry for my English 🙈, I am not a native speaker…)

Steve, regarding the wood block, did you plane the wood first before cutting the pattern? In addition to the kind of paint, there may have been uneven top surface that could account for the light print. Also i believe Anna carves into linoleum. When i used this technique eons ago, i used linoleum attached to a wood block. Wonder if the Creality would carve into linoleum? Also you could prevent paint absorption in the wood by giving it a clear top coat or primer…just something to seal the wood. That machine looks like great fun!
