THAT LAST ONE IS MEEE I'm sarcastic to my friends and family but if they do it back to me, half the time I'm like that Rocket Racoon quote "You were supposed to use a sarcastic voice! Now I look foolish!!"
@Lillyluvsanime2 жыл бұрын
When I first heard Rocket say that (we were watching in the theatre) I kinda yanked on my mom's arm and whispered excitedly at her "that's me!" Now, I do struggle a bit with sarcasm conceptually, mostly because... why not just say what you mean instead of saying the opposite and expecting people to understand it's opposite. But being around my step-dad for more than half my life now has helped. The purpose is humor. I am quite proud of myself when I do a solid sarcasm. But yeah, the tone has to be like... cartoonishly exaggerated for me to pick it up, or if I know the person really well and gradually pick up on their patterns.

Yea, my Mum used to always use "the voice" with sarcasm as I was growing up, so I thought for the longest time that sarcasm was when you use said voice. Took me until adulthood to learn (I think through an autism tictok?) that it's not. She just stopped using the voice one day and I never picked up on it and thought she was being weird.. 😑

Wait, so when I can't talk without forcing the words out of my mouth, that's because I socially drained myself? Gurl, I've been wondering why there are times where I can't talk after I've had a long day. That's wild. I thought I was just being dramatic because that's what my siblings said, this makes so much more sense.
@Lillyluvsanime2 жыл бұрын
That's a type of non-verbal state that's tied to shutdown. When all your resources are depleted, when the battery is drained and the spoons are gone... you have no energy left to talk, the connection between the brain and the mouth just kinda cuts off. At least, that's what it's like for me.

About the Asperger's syndrome tiktok! I was actually first diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger's syndrome when I was 7 (so in 2007) and for the longest time I would summarize Asperger's syndrome to anyone who asked me about it as "the milder form of autism". Turns out that was my internalized ableism and complete lack of knowledge about myself and I didn't stop doing that until 2014 when someone finally told me about the diagnosis change in 2013. And then I had a awkward period of my life in 2014-2017 where I was a Struggling Teenager because my parents kept going back and forth over whether or not I was "actually autistic" or just "higher functioning therefore not autistic". Thank god my family mainly moved past that, more so my stepdad then my mom, but I'm grateful for my time on Tumblr and the like for helping me better understand myself and my autistic ass lmao. I now know for a fact that I am very much simply autistic

I was also diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. One thing, though, is many countries still haven’t removed it as a diagnosis, so it’s not completely true it’s not a diagnosis anymore. I agree it shouldn’t be, but health professionals will still say I have Asperger’s when I go to the doctor or have been trying to find a therapist. 🙃

Hello hello, someone who is not autistic but suspects that they are here, wanted to share my own experience even if I do or don’t have autism So I’ve always liked doing things more by myself and I’ve always had a hard time socializing and working in groups, eye contact is a HUGE no no for me, hate it sm but still try, I have a hard time identifying emotion and a test I took with a professional doctor in 2020 or 2021 (they were face-to-face sessions) said that I have two extremes and no I’m between when it comes to emotion, I either feel too little or too much, that I have a hard time controlling my emotions and that I am more of an apath than an empath, I also struggle with understanding metaphors and meta language in some cases, unless they are very similar to it’s literal meaning as well as stimming when happy, angry, nervous or in agony. I was never diagnosed with it and I am NOT self-diagnosing, I’m just saying I suspect myself of having it due to these and a few other signs that, according to the research I’ve done on autism, match/are similar to signs of autism Hope this doesn’t offend anyone, if it does please tell me (I’d like to also know how/why it’s offensive if it is) Have a good day!

I feel very similar honestly. As a teenager I thought I could be autistic but at the time it was seen as a "bad thing" and mostly a thing for boys, so I never bothered to mention it while I was in therapy (which I hugely regret because now I can't afford general therapy much less a diagnosis). I also didn't realize there was so much variation to it because I only ever saw/ heard about autism in regards to people on the low-functioning and non-verbal end of the spectrum. Anyway, now as an adult with access to even better resources than I did back then, and seeing (from yt/tiktok/etc) other people's experiences with the autism spectrum.. I just get more and more convinced that younger-me was probably right. But as you said, it's not so much a self-diagnosis as a self-theory. I think about it like this: If I go to the doctor and think I've got an ear infection, they probably won't start by looking at my toes, because the issue is likely in my ear. Having an idea of what you might be dealing with can't hurt, so long as you don't start trying to self-treat or argue with actual doctors and whatnot.

So I made them have autism so I could relate more to them and one thing that just instantly clicked was the idea that they love the way the headphones vibrate when loud music is playing And I didn't know why it clicked so fast in my mind until I realized that that is literally one of my stims so like are there any stims that people don't realize they have until they actually think abt it? for any undiagnosed people reading the comments, you'll get through it! I'm on a 4 year + waiting list and being female I was missed by the healthcare system and listed as dramatic by everyone in my life, when i discovered what autism was a year ago I cried but it wasn't fully out of sadness, I felt a wave of happiness because for once in my life I felt like I'd clocked it and everything that I'd ever struggled with or experience suddenly just all made sense in that one moment so it was an overwhelming amount of information to take in at once. At the time I was 14 so I rely and still rely on my mom (that changes in 10 days) to refer me to healthcare (healthcare in the UK is accessible to minors under the age of 16 with parental permission, some cases being exceptions depending on the circumstance, once you turn 16 you can book an appointment yourself I assume, I'm not too looked up on how it works so if I got it wrong please let me know) she didn't believe me at first dismissing me telling me I would've been diagnosed a long time ago before coming back a week later and saying she'd actually looked into it and was concerned, with the permission from my school i was then referred to my doctor who then made me do a questionnaire in which I scored 9/10 so I was then referred on to CAMHS. 6 months later i was put on a waiting list after my first assessment in which I was told formal diagnosis could potentially take anything from 4 to more years, by the time i am diagnosed i will be at least 18 at the minimum, i am to receive speech and language therapy soon under CAMHS requirements and the official paperwork for that was signed around 2 months ago and so far nothings happened, its gonna be a long wait but coming to terms with my kind of awkward position is getting easier slowly, you can do this! Try to form connections with people on the spectrum, they can often explain some things to you you may be experiencing that you don't fully understand or just be there as a form of support as i know autism is an extremely mentally isolating disability, being able to relate to people when you've felt different all your life is an amazing feeling and i really recommend it! Keep going it'll be worth it in the end :)

I have an autistic brother and I think I'm autistic aswell. But I don't want to straight up go ask my mom that bc I feel like she will say that I'm faking it. I stim and get hyperfixated on things and I am picky on some foods. Some foods I will not eat no matter what. I hate textures that feel like sand or loom like they are smooth but they aren't. Like, the texture is grainy. I also get upset when it becomes to loud or a sound becomes to much. But then again, I could be faking. Idk

7:05 wait. that’s what they’ve meant this entire time? i’ve always hated those questions because it was very rare those videos actually contained something i didn’t already know but that’s not what they’re actually asking??? why are neurotypicals’ questions so complicated

Ok the one about the “urge to never speak again” happens to me a LOT. Especially during high stress moments like disagreements or if I’m having a meltdown around someone who doesn’t care.. I get into this fantasy about not speaking anymore.. Can someone tell me if this is because I’ve masked for so long that I didn’t go “non-verbal” when my body was telling me to?? ( I’m not officially diagnosed but it is in my family and I’m pretty dang sure I’m autistic) But this “mute fantasy” has plagued me as long as I can remember.. advice or opinions??

3:38 My mother really likes to make new foods a LOT and it really tics me off. She doesn't know I have Autism, but she definitely knows I have sensory issues ( A lot more than you ordinary Neurotypical) Like- come ON man Edit: She always called me a picky eater and always says "You don't like anything" When I groan seeing the dinner she's made. It's not that she isn't a good cook, its just the texture, taste ect. that always gets me!

My parents: *saying how I shouldn't get fidget toys because those are meant for people with ADHD, ADD, and Autism, saying I don't have any of those because I can sit still and then asking why I want them* Me: *thinking about all my autistic symptoms that I have had since I was basically able to walk* "...I just like them, I guess..!" Also me the next day: "Where the heck are my spiral rubber bands?! And I lost my noise cancelling ear plugs too?!" *Aggravated internal noises*

I’m late diagnosed and I have no idea how my parents didn’t know I was on the spectrum. I literally had a blankey (small blanket for babies) until I was 14…. And also if I didn’t do all my homework for the week by Tuesday I would cry. It was all just labeled as bad habits and being sensitive.

I love chips… hot chips specifically. They are my safe food,I have had hundreds of different types of chips, I love them, I’m gender fluid and and autistic, social norms make, literally no sense to me. I love rain, rats,and my special interest thing is mushrooms. Does anyone else with autism relate to being super sarcastic but then when someone else is sarcastic is confused you? That happens all the time for me

Haha! It seems like we're really similar people, hot chips are so my safe food! Although I like potato chips too!!!! Although I'm not gender fluid I am trans so yeah that!! Also the sarcasm! Yeah! I use sarcasm all the time but I have to ask "Are you being sarcastic right now?" it's stressful LOL

Gender is a social concept so it makes perfect sense that autistic people don’t identify with or get the norms. I saw what was happening, knew what they wanted me to do, and did my own thing anyway because it’s more reasonable and fits me better.

I disagree with the person at 2:21 I’m on the autism spectrum and prefer people use person first language. Because being autistic isn’t my identity, it’s just one part of who I am as a person. Also it’s kinda strange to label someone by their medical diagnosis. I also have IBS, but I’d never refer to myself as an IBS adult.
@bath_foam45762 жыл бұрын
i guess its a person to person thing?
@LIsAlwaysSleepy2 жыл бұрын
I just wanted to add my perspective (I am autistic) everytime I personally have had some use person first language in reference to me, it has been by their own explanation because it reminds people that autistic people/people with autism are deserving of respect. Personally my opinion is if someone has to use people first language to remember not to be disrespectful then they never had any actual respect. There's also the opinion that children need person first so they don't feel bad about themselves for the autism... which wouldn't be a problem if they (neurotypicals) didn't demonize autism in the first place. This is, of course just my experience and why I personally prefer identity first language. Preferred language is obviously up to the individual, I just struggle with person first language due to the amount of times it has been used for me patronizingly and against my wishes or have had non autistic people just straight up tell me im wrong for my preference
@randomxstuff2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for adding your perspective! For me, I prefer identity first language because my autism is how my brain works and changes how I think and behave. It isn't just a part of me, it is how I see the world and interact with it. This is just my experience, feel free to disagree.
@Marispider2 жыл бұрын
That's fair, I feel like it's a case by case thing and people shouldn't worry too much about which is the right one. I don't have a real preference - I usually say "autistic people" because it's shorter than "people with autism" but I use them interchangeably (unless I'm talking about someone specific and they have a preference) - but from my understanding people who prefer identity-first language do so because they don't want their autism to be seen as something that can be outgrown/cured/ignored, or as something that they should be distanced from.
@kalimera34522 жыл бұрын
Yeah. If you are autistic, your brain is literally wired different. Everything that you do and think comes from an autistic brain. You cannot separate autism from the person. Therefore, I prefer “autistic person” rather than “person with autism.” The latter makes it seem it’s a separate ailment of some kind, when it is not an ailment, just a different brain type that will never go away/can never be removed or rewired.
