And my outfits are also extremely colorful. But I make it work and regularly get compliments on my unique style. And when it comes to color, of course you don’t want to look like a rainbow puked on you, but there’s even a way to do that and have it look nice. You just have to find the right balance of matching and contrast. Like matching your eyeshadow to your outfit but your jewelry be a sharp contrast to that and your shoes and bags match your jewelry.

The whole contrast thing is related to the resurgence of color seasons. The idea behind color seasons is that some things look more natural/harmonious on certain people and somethings will look less natural/dis-harmonious. I (and a lot of others) view color seasons just as a tool to help understand what effect different colors will have on you so you can create the kind of look you want rather than as a hard and fast rule. Your contrast level helps determine your season and how dramatic certain things will look on you. The way you tell is by taking a photo of yourself (without makeup) and turning it black and white. If your hair eyes and lips stand out, you have high contrast and are probably a winter or spring (depends on your undertone). If your hair, eyes, lips, and skin all kind of blend together then you have low contrast and are probably a summer or autumn (once again depending on your undertone). Your undertone, warm or cool, also helps determine your color season. Knowing your undertone helps you pick the right shade of a color to compliment your skin tone. Using undertones and contrast levels together can help you determine if something will look natural on you or dramatic, if it will give you a glow or make you look dead. Color seasons are just color theory repackaged in a more marketable way. Some people get crazy strict about it which is sad because that does limit your creativity but it can be a really great tool when used as just that, a tool. Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk * Steps off of soap box * *Edited for spelling

I always thought the low high contrast thing was about how strong your features are. Like if you have harsh brows and very dark defined eyes you shouldn’t do very heavy dark smokey eyes with a red lip. Idk if i make sense really 😭
@tearfulxsoul14 күн бұрын
Yeah I get this, I thought the same thing. I have very very strong features. I have dark hair and deep brown / hazel eyes but my eyebrows are light brown and I naturally have very little of them 😂 so I have to use a darker eyebrow pencil to accentuate my features and use darker/cool toned eyeshadows. I can still use every colour of eyeshadow it just depends on the tone. I can pull off most lip colours, mostly nudes, browns, but only a true cool cherry red and not a warm red. If I try to do my makeup in that “natural makeup look” that people use in tutorials I look sick 😂 My mum and sister are both blonde, my mum has blue eyes so if she does pinky shades and a bit more natural it looks beautiful and highlights her features. If I want to use pink I have to use a deep, darker pink/mauve or neon pink. Idk I never really thought about this high contrast thing, I just always thought about doing my makeup in a way that highlights my features. My makeup and my mums makeup still have a contrast in a way but you don’t really think about that. More just about whether it flatters you or not and adds to your makeup look. Unless we painted our face with just our foundation colour and nothing else there will always be contrast lol. I feel like the contrast thing has just tried to turn colour theory into something else and make the concept of using makeup that accentuates your natural features into something fancy. Seems like a lot of people just wanna ban freedom or creativity in makeup 😂

@@UnderTheElmthe contrast convo is actively limiting people from actually learning how to do makeup and finding makeup that suits them. most people who “don’t look good with lots of makeup” for example usually just have a lower skill level. Robert clearly said that ofc color theory exists but these trends are limiting people
@folfelit13 күн бұрын
@UnderTheElm the problem is that contrast is not inherent with human faces. Small eyes with high contrast makeup will look smaller - is that inherently bad? What if you like small eyes? Then you would think you're high contrast while everyone else claims you're low. It falls down to preferences. It wouldn't be so criticized if people explained how it works instead of claiming faces can be inherently high or low contrast. High contrast exaggerates - if it's big, it'll look bigger. If it's small, it'll look smaller. Low contrast does not affect size/ impression. If you want to exaggerate a feature of yours, high contrast there. That's it. Faces aren't inherently high or low contrast, except eye and hair color - which isn't even used in most of the examples both high and low examples (which tends to be multiple East Asian women of dark hair and eye, or multiple white women with light both somehow each having high and low variations.)

@elizabethtangora435314 күн бұрын
High contrast is the look when you take a picture and edit the contrast way up: the dark areas like eyes and lips become darker while the light areas of the face (mostly large areas of skin unless the person is very dark skinned) become lighter. The part I don’t understand is how that relates to makeup. A study I read once found that when presented with a series of androgynous faces, people identified them as masculine or feminine based on the level of contrast. So scientifically, if you’re a “low contrast” person who wants to look more feminine you should be applying makeup to make your lips and eyes darker. But that doesn’t seem to be the trend? 🤷♀️ I guess I’m glad because the implications for dark skinned people are pretty problematic.

If the high/low contrast thing is real, doesn’t that mean 99% of East Asian girls have low/medium contrast and can only do plain natural makeup?😂

Thank you for talking about the color correctors! I specifically use a Peach color corrector for my skin and was constantly told over the years (mainly by these "influencers") to use the orange one. The Peach corrector has worked wonders on my dark spots and under eyes. Thank god I figured that out before my brother's wedding this year, haha 😅

High contrast/low contrast is a real thing. It’s just looking at makeup the way an artist might (like a traditionally trained painter kind of thing). BUT that doesn’t mean you can’t do what you want or it won’t look good if you don’t follow the concept. We usually end up following it by default anyway. It’s really just looking at it through a different lens, which might be confusing for some or helpful for others. I’m always just like take and leave whatever works best for you because it’s your face at the end of the day.

To be annoying for the sake of being concise, it's this, * one way an artist would. I get frustrated that the moment social media could (not even does but COULD) support creative and innovative artistry they fall back to not being rule breakers of things that are tried but not true everytime. I feel this way bc of respect for the traditional art as well, copy paste can't do it justice and it feels like I'm being gatekept in the shallow (and eurocentric) end of a pool, there's no safe way to dive into historical influence anymore unless you try to isolate your references from other people. That can be a really cold way to proceed. More a rant, not tryna fix your point just establishing mine as constantly alternative without that even being my intention. It honestly sucks for people how gated the community has gotten.

I had a makeup artist tell me once that I shouldn’t wear makeup, in particular eyeshadow because I have “harsh features”, Mind you, the “harsh features” are because I have a medical condition that has caused facial abnormalities. I was told that at 16 when I was apart of a wedding. They still did my makeup. I’m not saying that the contrast thing isn’t a real thing that has to do with our individual features. Beauty is science. It’s not just social. BUT, this wave of social media content creators telling us that we have to do this now is giving off the same energy my makeup artist gave me. It’s telling us (especially younger people who don’t know better) that you can’t do something because the “rules” say you can’t, and because you don’t look a certain way. Again, it might be rooted in science. Art has theories to it. Makeup is art. But, it sure does exclude a lot of people and even for the people who are included, they have to follow these strict rules as well. Just like apparently I can’t wear makeup at all because I have big, popped out eyes, big cheeks and big lips.

@@projectalyce I’m so sorry someone said that to you. It’s not true. Everyone and anyone can wear makeup. I’m sure you look great with or without makeup. I have an autoimmune disorder and had gotten used to doing things a certain way to accommodate the physical manifestation of it. My medicine has returned me to the way I was before I got sick but I still do my makeup the same. Old habits die hard and I do what I like and am comfortable with, not necessarily following what the consensus on the best technique is. As for the high contrast/low contrast concept - it’s a similar idea to light and shadow, what you bring forward, what you bring back. These are tools for people to use or ignore how they please. If any influencer or person is telling you that you have to do your makeup a certain way they are lying to you or are misguided themselves and being short sighted. At that point, it’s no longer A lens, but it’s being pushed as THE lens, and there’s not much art in that.

@@projectalyce she’s got a major skill issue in my opinion. Like, what’s her damage??? For real, that’s insanely cruel. To tell ANYONE, let alone a *16 year old* AT AN EVENT,* that they “shouldn’t wear makeup” is unhinged and degrading. I’m probably definitely preaching to the pastor here though… A face is a face. If makeup is for your face, all you need is a face. End of story.

I don’t think the contrast makeup is stupid or hard to understand, but I hate that it’s a “trend.” I think it’s super helpful. But I’m also a visual artist and have been deep into color analysis all year. I think people on the internet take things too far. Color theory is hard and subjective and people act like it’s easy or objective. I think for people who don’t have professional expertise and consistently don’t like how their makeup comes out (me), it’s helpful to use color theory as a tool to find what suits them most. Color theory is also play. Not all of us act like it’s the only way things should be. It’s been a great tool and breakthrough for me 😊
@Merdragoon13 күн бұрын
I didn't even know the High, Mid, and Low contrast was even a make up trend until Style Theory talked about it, and they make a really good point that it's only really good for "netural/natural" looks because the color has a very different thing to it, and really should be used as a tool then a need. High, Mid, and Low Contrast in art is only good for Monotones as a "full peice" but also only should be used as a tool for what you're trying to achive. Make up is a form of art as well and should follow the same idea of it being a tool instead of a necessiety.

13:52 this guy has almost exactly the kind of darker tone all the way around the eyes that I do! i don't usually wear makeup but have tried to put on some for a photo or event, and concealer under my eyes always just looked unnatural. good tip from him about matching your skin tone instead of going lighter as is "typical"

I have one nice thing to say about the contrast trend, which is that it gave me a language to understand why I don't like nude lipsticks on myself - and whenever i feel like doing a softer lip i keep this language in mind to remind myself how to do it so i like it.
