Personal experience: A friend of mine from my teenage years always wanted to show his parents that he was capable but they kept calling him useless because he had talents they didn't care for and weaknesses that they describe as a disgrace to the family. He broke eventually and his parents threw him out. He already had terrible anxiety and this developed to severe depression and personality disorders. Luckily me and my friends helped him out and we did what we could. He relies heavily on meds just to function but hey he lived. That's what matters. However, he has difficulties a lot of the times to get out of bed and doing simple things quite a bit. If he needed to talk to someone, I do what I can to speak to him. In Asian culture especially, the moment you do anything that is considered a "disgrace to family" such as having a mental illness you're likely to be disposed off like that as my friend sadly went through. There are worse things in life than death itself.

There are countless children who developed mental illness due to parental and societal pressure. In my generation, I have 2 cousins who were both top students. One developed OCD, the other developed schizo affective disease. Ironically, all of the other cousins who didn't/couldn't excel academically were all mentally normal. Childhood, school, and even work life, are just too cut throat. I don't know what I did right in the previous life, but coming to America for school and work wss the best thing to ever happen to me. I feel really bad for my 2 cousins. They were very smart as well. Our parents constantly used us to compare and pressure each. To see them crack under pressure was a fate they didn't deserve.

Will you expect the same of your children, and what if they have mental illness that prevents them from being better than you? I think the expectation that things will become better is not only a false illusion but also dangerous. We don't drive our cars and expect nothing bad will happen, and as a result not wear seat belts. Why should we move forward in life expecting things to get better all the time? It's dangerous and foolish. Better to live in reality day by day and see where you and your children go in life.

@@sohu86x Of course that is a very special case. I'm talking about my case specifically. My parents were the traditional type that has high expectation, signing me up for after school activities, frowning on video games, expect either a career in the medical or engineering field. They have a very outdated view on mental illness which is if they can't see it then it doesn't exist. I do give them credit for not seeing it as an excuse because they saw the results of extreme pressure on my cousins. Growing up in a Western world with more exposure and awareness to mental health I will of course will not pass those type of pressure down to my kids. Will that means I will not pass down those values down to my kids? Nope. There is a reason why Eastern culture has the kind of success it has globally. Everything in moderation. The sad reality for a lot of the people in China is that job scarcity is a major problem to manage when the country has over a billion people, which has made it almost impossible to provide jobs for every single individual. This is why there's fierce competition when it comes to academics. Most parents don't want their kids to struggle the same way they did, but what this does is create a huge pressure on children at a young age, when they are supposed to have fun and enjoy life, not needing to feel the pressure of adulthood. One of my uncles told me when he was kid, going to school in China was that, being second best is considered a failure and that getting straight A is not just a sign of achievement, its a major requirement that will have a big impact on your future and earning a career. This was one of the reasons why my family left China and came to the US. After seeing the pressure and mental illness these kids suffer, I'm happy to say that my family immigrating to the US was the best decision they've ever made.

Acknowledging that all humans have mental and emotional needs is a simple reality and fact of understanding that humans are not just physical bodies, but that we also have a soul (mind, emotions and will) and a spirit. Holistic health looks at these 3 areas of health - mind/emotions, body and spirit. Not understanding our humanity or our true health needs is ignorance. Just like our bodies can have a broken bone, or disease so too can our mind, emotions, heart and spirit. The problem is that we cannot physically see our mind, emotions or spirit like we can our bodies, but they are just as real as our body parts. Just because we cannot see them, it doesn't mean they don't exist or are not real.

This is the result of a very crowded country that has bet everything on capitalism; the "you sink or swim" type of ruthless Darwinism. For those who are living comfortably in the West, let's not be too quick to pass judgement on others simply because our societies have long gone past this same stage of crude capitalism. On the other hand, when more people are talking about mental health, it actually is a sign that the society is in the early stage of getting wealthier and can afford to start confronting it as a problem. When you're dirt poor, mental health is not even part of the medical dictionary.

In the context of the current economic downturn driven by the CCP’s "involutionary" political policies and the deeply ingrained culture of social comparison, it is unsurprising that many, particularly young people who have grown up in a hyper-competitive educational environment, are experiencing heightened anxiety and uncertainty about their future. This pressure is compounded by exploitative labour practices, such as the infamous "996" work schedule, which demands long hours at the expense of personal well-being. The combination of economic strain, social pressure, and relentless work expectations could be described as a "capitalist CCP-style" syndrome-a fusion of capitalist exploitation and authoritarian control that leads to both psychological and economic stress. The real challenge for the CCP is whether it can evolve beyond its rigid, patriarchal mentality and self-serving agenda to address these growing pressures before the label "Sick Man of Asia" resurfaces in a modern context. The regime’s current strategy-focused on maintaining control, stifling dissent, and perpetuating its top-down governance-only deepens societal frustrations and widens the disconnect between the state and its people. To genuinely alleviate these concerns, the CCP would need to take bold and unprecedented risks. Foremost among these would be abandoning its tight grip on power in favour of policies that promote individual well-being, safeguard labour rights, and foster social mobility. Re-engaging with the international community, especially developed economies, is crucial for revitalising China's economic outlook and addressing domestic discontent. However, this would require the CCP to relinquish some of its authoritarian control and embrace reforms that encourage innovation, protect workers' rights, and open up the economy to more meaningful global collaboration. Yet, such changes would challenge the very foundation of the party's entrenched power structures, which thrive on centralization and corruption. Shifting away from a patriarchal, top-heavy governance model to one that empowers citizens and welcomes external influences is not just a political challenge but an existential one for the CCP. The central issue is whether the CCP is willing to take the necessary risks to loosen its control in exchange for long-term stability, social harmony, and economic growth. Failure to do so not only risks further alienating the population but also increases the likelihood of internal unrest and prolonged economic stagnation. The question is not merely how the CCP can adjust its policies but whether it is capable of fundamentally reforming its approach to governance before the internal and external pressures it has created become too overwhelming to manage.

CNA succeeded in making me believe that Mao was right about mental health being a bourgeois disease. This is all thanks to how CNA chose to approach this topic: choosing interviewees from Shanghai (the city infamous for worshiping the West), interviewing an economist for an investigative report on mental health, and blaming mental health issues on a lockdown that has saved countless lives from a deadly virus (Shanghainese are the ones constantly whining that they can't go out and have fun). The mental health industry can be quite lucrative, no wonder CNA is eager for China to have an ... overproduction ... of mental health patients.

I would like to know more. So Mao did not destroy buddhist culture and made an environment for overworking it's citizens?
@huhwhatjason3 ай бұрын
@@simonk5571 Buddhist culture: Mao is enamored by the Journey of the West (a work fusing elements of Buddhisma and Taoism), and he often sees himself in the role of Sun Wukong. Overworking: Mao won the revolution using the "the countryside surround the cities" strategy, which was only possible because he won the loyalty of peasants in the countryside by freeing them from exploitative landlords. If you're truly interested in the answers, you'll investigate the matter yourself and not rely on either me or CNA to inform you.

They deal with it by pushing their children to achieve perfection but the parents themselves remain stagnant. It's as if the children are a stock investment or a gambling chip.
