The train we built in the last episode heads out to deliver its cars and pick up a few. Plus a surprise! (Spoiler: I got a boxcab locomotive).
My model railroad is a 10' x 13' HO scale shelf layout set on Long Island in the mid 1960s (give or take). Why I model the LIRR is a long story... It's "done" to all outward appearances, for now...

I just learned this week that the boxcab diesel that Grand Trunk Western used to switch it's ferry yard in Milwaukee, Wis. for many, many years was purchased used from the LIRR.

Nice boxcab! I tried building the Roundhouse kit for one, converting it to DCC, but failed. I've always been interested in the very compact yards served by car floats on the west side of Manhattan. Operating a layout based on the Erie's would be fun. But the yard with the circular freight house (Lehigh Valley?) was the coolest, in my opiniion, although coupling and uncoupling cars on the tight curves could be a nightmare in HO. It would be neat to model either one, but well beyond my capabilities because they would require hand-laid track. I suppose you could do the Erie yard by trimming all the excess from #4 switches. But yeah, coupling and uncoupling would be a nightmare and it would all have to be perfect or there would be lots of derailing. Perfect track work is not a strongpoint of mine...

May I ask where you got the decals for that RS1? I have an undecorated one I want to paint in that paint scheme but can't find the decals. I enjoy your videos of operation on the LIRR lived here my entire life ride the rails to the city all the time.

The RS-1 is actually an Atlas model that I bought as is. However you can get LIRR decals from Island Modelworks. I don't know if he'll have exactly what you want, though.

Possibly a dumb question, but whats the point of a caboos if its gonna be at the fromt of a train?

When you consider what a caboose is for, on a short train it doesn't really matter where it goes. Putting it next to the engine makes for much easier switching.

@@Anon_Omis I believe on long trains some cabooses were fitted with pumps to help bring up the pressure on the brake line, but on a short train that wouldn't matter.
