The 1972 Lecture also says Neil was bought by Crovans Gate Mining Company and now survives

Yeah, it was the other two S&M engines who got worked to death.

The last fact was quite the interesting one. Since it's already known that Gordon was named after a boy who lived on the same street as the Awdrys and Wilbert was named after the reverend himself. So it's very likely this would be the same case for other characters.

Here are 2 Thomas Lore Facts you never heard. 1. Thomas was rebuilt at Crovan's Gate in 1916, hence the reason behind his iconic shape. 2. Gordon was rebuilt at Crewe in 1939 as a 2 cylinder locomotive, giving a reason behind his front running board.

It wasn't Neil who was "worked to scrap iron", it was one of the other two. Neil was sold to the Crovan's Gate Mining Company, and the other was sold somewhere else.

I initially thought that too but the proportions in Awdry’s drawings, the cab windows in particular, bare more of a resemblance to a C1. Notably the variant with the larger boiler. Henry Oakley does look similar though but not quite the same
