It's funny that they think that variation is the key to progress when consistency and specificity are essential. I'm sure that even professional CrossFit athletes periodize by adaptations or by abilities. They must have specific days, weeks or months to do Olympic lifting, calisthenics or running exercises and in all of them they must carry out progressive overload.

The best CrossFit athletes don't actually do CrossFit as it was originally designed. The majority of their training is monostructural. They have a dedicated strength session, dedicated running sessions etc. etc.

Conjugate features variation as its primary reason for adaptation. In addition to avoiding overuse issues. Matt Winning talks extensively about this. The problem is that for people to understand training at the highest level, nuance is required.
@I_Might_B_Wrong3 ай бұрын
You’re misunderstanding Conjugate variation if you’re comparing it to CrossFit. Variation is not the driving force of progression. The principle of variation in Conjugate, for one, doesn’t vary from workout to workout like CrossFit. The variations rotate only when progress starts to stall, and the variations are used to target the weakest links of the athletes in each lift. If your triceps were limiting your bench and you did a ton of work to bring them up, you now get to find what the new weakest link is and change your variation to focus on that.
@thejdshipley3 ай бұрын
lol, “…to understand training at the highest level, nuance is required”. No, this is nonsense. Variation does not drive adaptation. Stress drives adaptation. Variation is merely a fun of idea that does nothing for a typical trainee.
@user-dn4lg1dv5v3 ай бұрын
@thejdshipley obviously, stress drives adaptation. That's understood. But the law of diminishing returns also applies. If adding more weight every session worked the way you guys teach, you'd all be benching 1000lbs. Clearly, Matt Winning knows something about being strong. I'll stick with his teaching over Ripatoe Dogma. It's great that y'all preach the barbell movements and progressive overload. That should be the cornerstone of everyone's training. But after the novice phase, variation is required. There's a reason you guys only coach Beginners.
@joeberger34413 ай бұрын
@@user-dn4lg1dv5vI'm a huge fan of conjugate principles and agree it works beautifully as a peaking program (or even year round strength development). That being said, a more linear, less varied program still "`works" even if weights aren't added every session. Obviously you won't be able to continue to add weight to the bar every session (or even every month) once you get past a certain point in training, but that's OK. Progressive overload doesn't necessarily mean that weight or reps need to be added each time. It simply means that the level of stress needs to remain relevant. Even if adaptations are slowing down, they're still occurring. For an experienced trainee, a given load might remain challenging for MONTHS before finally breaking that plateau. This is perfectly fine and normal. Most newbs actually completely hop programs at that point rather than ride it out. If weight or reps can't be added, one can also use metrics like bar speed, RPE, and technique improvements as a way to gauge strength adaptations. So yes, conjugate definitely can work and is proven to work, but a more linear program is not irrelevant and progressive overload is always a factor, conjugate or not.

@@user-dn4lg1dv5v You're right, Matt Wenning has some good info. I think Rip has a lot of good info too. I'm not sure who you mean by "you guys" as I don't think any Starting Strength coaches have responded to you here, and I know I'm not one for sure. I've trained with Robert Santana who is, and he's ALSO a Renaissance Periodization coach on their diet and coaching team. Even guys in the SS circle aren't necessarily dogmatic or restricted to only coaching beginners. I've also trained with a dedicated Powerlifting coach. When I reply regarding Conjugate, it's from experience learning about conjugate, not from following SS Dogma.

@michaellee98833 ай бұрын
Well, I’ve got a couple compression fracture deformities in my thoracic spine. Thoracic spine pain is relatively rare. Have you tried taking a wider grip? Are you setting up the squat correctly by focusing on engaging your spinal erector muscles and lifting your chest so your spine is in a stable, strong, protected normal anatomical position? Are you engaging your abs? The goal is to create a giant cylinder of engaged muscles around your spine.

You might have weak abdominal or glutes and your other muscles are over compensating. Try doing planks and glute bridges for a couple of weeks and see if that helps.

Let’s do last man living - fittest on earth.

@AIK.18912 ай бұрын
@@woodshcc5 so… if it doesn’t matter - why put it first? If it doesn’t matter, in order to make the test safer, an intelligent decision would be to put it first. But they didn’t. Planning an event includes things like having adequate safety protocols with lifeguards (trained!) etc. But it also includes structure of the moment. “What, when, how…” If it doesn’t matter from a testing and/or physical standpoint to put the swimming Before running, it should be, in order to Not jeopardise the safety of the athletes. Like they do at the Ironman… it doesn’t matter from a testing point of view. But it does certainly matter from a safety point of view. But then again- Ironman is a real sport and CrossFit is not.

Getting coached is good advice. Need to set your core and low back at the top and the back and spine really shouldn't bend or move during the rep. Make sure your feet are wider than shoulders and toes out 30°ish, AND keep your knees wide so your hips can get into the bottom position.
