🎲 Game Rules ♟
In Coup, you want to be the last player with influence in the game, with influence being represented by face-down character cards in your playing area.
Each player starts the game with two coins and two influence - i.e., two face-down character cards; the fifteen card deck consists of three copies of five different characters, each with a unique set of powers:
Duke: Take three coins from the treasury. Block someone from taking foreign aid.
Assassin: Pay three coins and try to assassinate another player's character.
Contessa: Block an assassination attempt against yourself.
Captain: Take two coins from another player, or block someone from stealing coins from you.
Ambassador: Draw two character cards from the Court (the deck), choose which (if any) to exchange with your face-down characters, then return two. Block someone from stealing coins from you.
On your turn, you can take any of the actions listed above, regardless of which characters you actually have in front of you, or you can take one of three other actions:
Income: Take one coin from the treasury.
Foreign aid: Take two coins from the treasury.
Coup: Pay seven coins and launch a coup against an opponent, forcing that player to lose an influence. (If you have ten coins or more, you must take this action.)
When you take one of the character actions - whether actively on your turn, or defensively in response to someone else's action - that character's action automatically succeeds unless an opponent challenges you. In this case, if you can't (or don't) reveal the appropriate character, you lose an influence, turning one of your characters face-up. Face-up characters cannot be used, and if both of your characters are face-up, you're out of the game.
If you do have the character in question and choose to reveal it, the opponent loses an influence, then you shuffle that character into the deck and draw a new one, perhaps getting the same character again and perhaps not.
The last player to still have influence - that is, a face-down character - wins the game!

julia was able to single-handedly elimate tiff just because she didnt pay the 3 coins for every time she tried to assassinate someone regardless of the result. this completely brakes the game.

TIFF SHOULD LOSE BOTH OF HER CARDS FOR CLAIMING CONTESSA. YOU LOSE ONE FOR GETTING CHALLENGED AND YOU LOSE ANOTHER CARD FOR GETTING ASSASSINATED.

Btw the reason this is a rule is because everyone who gets assassinated would always just claim Contessa. The punishment for claiming Contessa AND GETTING CHALLENGED is you lose both of your cards. Knowing this rule, it also makes fake claiming Contessa really strong because someone is risking BOTH of their cards for the fake claim.

I mean fair enough, but my friends and I play it the way they play it - if you claim contessa to block an assassination and you get caught lying, you only lose one card. It's just like every other card you fake; for us, it's more fun this way, otherwise everyone just dies really quickly (when we play, anyway) And we don't really have the issue of the 'everyone claiming contessa', since you still pay the consequences and lose a life - but maybe we just play it differently :p

According to my knowledge of the game, there are three things they're doing wrong I believe. One is that no one else can block on behalf of the person who's getting assisanated or stolen. It has to be the person who's on the receiving end. Second, I think when players lose their influence cards, they get to select which one of them they would want to discard. The others don't get to choose that. And lastly, when you discard an influence card, you don't put it in a discard pile. You instead have to just turn it face up and that shows that the card is no more longer in use and is killed. I think these are the official rules. Not exactly sure. But well they always have house rules which differ from the official rules, so it's fine 😁 I like Coup 😁 Also, I just remembered, as an ambassador, you just don't switch both your cards. You pick two cards from the top of the court pile, take a look at them. Now you have four cards. Out of those four, you get to keep any two you like.

In the rulebook there is no rule against blocking for other players. And I quote in the rulebook "Counteractions can be taken by other players to intervene or block a player's action." You can block others as far as I interrupt this rule. I am a judge for other games, my understanding of this rule doesn't seem to be wrong due to the fact that I don't see anything online researching how to play the game.

one more thing. If you block an assasin but don't have a contessa, one influence gets assasinated and the other one also perish from the fake block. If you challenge an assasin and the assasin has the assasin card, then you loose 2 influences as well, same reason: one is assasinated and one is from failed challenged. Therefore, it is very risky to challenge an assasin with 2 cards.

Correction: When you try to assassinate and they claim Contessa, challenged or not, the person assassinating still has to give up 3 of his/her coin as "spent", they cant just retract the assassination pay

Did anyone notice that at 3:20 when Tiff claimed she was a captain, Geo should've challenged her??? She had 2 captain influence cards and just got another one when she switched her two cards, meaning she should know where all 3 captain cards would be (2 in the middle deck and 1 as her own influence card). This means that there is no way Tiff could be a captain, and that would've changed the game a lot.

I like all the fun and stuff in this video *BUT* read the rules people. We are watching this mainly to understand the game. Instead we leave confused and have to read the rules again. 1. When an assassination gets blocked by the Contessa the fee _remains_ spent. 2. When you lose an influence the card remains open infront of you so that people can see what has been played and calculate accordingly, you don't suffle it back to the Court deck. 3. When you swap cards with the Ambassador you _first_ take 2 cards, then exchange one, both or none with your face down cards and then return two. It's important to do it in this order. Also there is a huge title at 2:32 "AS DUKE, X CAN BLOCK X'S TAX". *NO* he can't. Nobody can block Tax neither as Duke or as any of the other 5 characters.

Guys if you get one thing from the comments please have it be this statement: Contessa and captain (and ambassador block) can ONLY block for YOURSELF. Period. No blocking for others. Duke can block anyone's foreign aid, that's the exception. A dead card stays face up in front of the player, so that it is NOT back in the game. Ambassadors can look at 2 cards and keep 2 (or 1 if they lost an influence) of the 4 (or 3 if they lost an influence). We also play Blocking of stealing differently than you guys, but it isn't as big of a deal, only the stolen from player can block in our games, or else the captain is a super weak card.
