Pat actually had an assassin when Simone went to assassinate Brennan, which makes his whole interaction at 17:00 even more wild. Pat does not have a Contessa, but still manages to make it look like he messed up and accidentally revealed his card. You can *see* the panic on his face and his entire demeanor shifts as everyone immediately pins him as having a Contessa! By simply pretending to be a bad liar (or actually being one, I legitimately cannot tell) he has put himself in position for Brennan to rely on him, and he immediately switches gears to set up the iconic "Then Perish" moment. They didn't play it wrong since they had a ton of fun and it was super entertaining, but they made several very large rules mistakes (or house ruled things they didn't mention) but for anyone watching this with the idea of learning how to play: 1. Contessa cannot block assassinations against other players, only when the person targeted claims to have a Contessa 2. When you "lose influence" either by being caught lying or being the target of an assassination/coup you flip over the card in front of you. It does not get shuffled back into the deck. This makes more information available as the game goes on.
@dovalslayer23 Жыл бұрын
Ok thats what i was wondering when he first lost the assassination play he just shuffled it back in. As for blocking for others ive seen that as a rule going back and forth for different people
@TheRealJuiceGrape Жыл бұрын
@dovalslayer23 the rules very clearly state "the player being assassinated may claim being contessa to counteract and block the action". They played it wrong
@raisins777711 ай бұрын
The base game rule is contessa can assasin-block for the holder only, captain/ambassador can steal-block for the holder only. A duke can coin-block anyone (obviously). But *anyone* can challenge any card claim, even as a third party to the play.
@calvinjohnson624210 ай бұрын
Though the rules don’t suggest you can block other people’s Assassinations, I wouldn’t play it any other way.

This was the first video I had seen of coup being played, and despite seeing many other coup videos and coup expansions since then, it remains the most entertaining to watch so far, despite my having watched it 5 times. I would love to see this cast return for another game or two of coup, especially Brennan, because he really adds a special element to the personalities. His duke persona was awesome, and makes it worth re-watching if only to watch the range of the other's reactions to his 'dukely' decisions. Priceless

It was really fun but... It was so frustrating to watch because omg those rules were so wrong! That's not how you play at all... Check out the rules online. You can't block for other people other than yourself. Only thing you can block is foreign aid as a Duke. And when you reveal your influence card, turn it up and place it on the table. It only goes back into the deck, if you didn't lose.. So if you were called out and that influence card was true. Or if the ambassador/inquisitor tells you get rid of the card, which you shuffle back into the deck and redraw. If you lose your influence card because you were assassinated or called out, then you place it face up on the table to reveal what your card was. That way as the rounds go on, it's easier to start seeing who is isn't who they say they are, and who is. It's like poker where they reveal their hand, except that they are still in the game, and you use that information to figure out who is bluffing, who bluffed before and they were lying.. And so on. It becomes so much more of a brutal and calculating game. I love coup. I play board games with a group of friends, and we play this game all the time, normally as either a starter or casual game in between board games, before we start one of our more longer board games like agricola or caverna... XD

For those considering picking this up, a few rules notes: 1) When you lose an influence card, you flip it face up in front of you for the rest of the game instead of shuffling it back into the deck (though the way they play could make for an interesting house rule, it becomes harder to keep track of information that way). 2) When a player is attacked (assassin or captain), no other player may use counter abilities on their behalf (contessa, ambassador, captain), though anyone may challenge the attacker (you can always challenge any claim, no matter who’s doing it or why). This is not balanced to be a game of alliances, it is a game of strict self interest combined with the occasional spite call (Simone). None of this is to say I found the video any less fun, but it always helps to point out errors in play when missing them can lead to a less than optimal experience for someone unfamiliar with the game.
@AlgaeGaming5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for explaining! I'm not sure if I'd like it better with or without the "using defensive abilities for others". Also, shouldn't Jenna have lost a card after 11:28 when she called out Brian's Contessa?

Jenna did really well with her Contessa. She stayed out of the drama, didn’t try to get greedy and antagonize any Dukes. Because her Contessa had basically zero financial or military ability other than protection, she kept her head down and made it so she couldn’t be assassinated.

I love that you guys are playing one of my favorite games. 2 quick clarifications (that don’t matter, because they had fun playing) 1) contessa cannot block an assassination when you’re not the target 2) when you lose an influence, you place the card face up (you don’t shuffle the card back into the deck) Last note: Pat’s best move in that last bit would’ve been to just take 1 coin and (if all other players adopted a similar strategy) he wouldn’t be the first to 10 coins and thus wouldn’t be the first forced to coup
@christiangarza81224 жыл бұрын
Though in my opinion the Contessa house rule could make the game a lot more fun and interesting.

Also, if they call you out on being an assassin, and you are not one, you still have to pay the 3 coins. Paying resolves first.
@killer9984 жыл бұрын
Amina This is technically incorrect. Paying three coins is part of the action as assassin, when proved you don’t have the assassin, you can’t actually perform the action. Thus getting the 3 coins back. It says this in the rule book under challenges. “If an action is successfully challenged the entire action fails, and any coins paid as the cost of the action are returned to the player”.

Well she also was in control of the table socially. She, from the beginning, walked everyone else through what was going on. She played the people and spoke up regularly. She played the game less on her turn with actions and more on everyone else's turn with her words. So it was her control of the table that let her win I think. The second viewing you certainly catch her masterful play. I dig it
@ButterflyScarlet5 жыл бұрын
@@calebsimmons8539 Yeah, usually people who try to go this route tend to draw suspicion by being too quiet. By speaking up regularly while measuring her own actions, she gives the appearance of being far more involved than she actually was.
