Years ago, while in high school, I was gifted a 71’ Ruger M-77 in .25-06. I hunted hard and long with that rifle thru the 1980’s and 90’s and still own it today. It’s mostly a safe queen now; showing only a few marks on her. The bolt is so smooth, the wood is beautiful. It’s a bull barrel 22” long. I would love to have an RSI

I got a ruger m77 compact in 308. I have killed 8 deer ,3 coyotes and 1 hog with it. I absolutely love it. It’s so light and handy with the 16 inch barrel great for my thick Georgia woods where I usually never shoot past 100 yards. But I did reach out to 300 on a doe and she got the job. I couldn’t recommend this rifle enough it’s been putting meat in my freezer for going on 15 years now.

Great video and great rifles. If I am not mistaken, the Sportsman 78 was made for sale in "Big Box" stores like Walmart at relatively low price. Sears and Montgomery Wards tended to market guns under their own "brand". I bought two of the Ruger Model 77 RSI "International" rifles for my sons. They are not the "Mark II" though. They both have the tang safety, as does my Ruger 77R .30-06. My oldest son was just coming to hunting age in 1983. His own deer rifle for his birthday in October would be just the perfect gift. My second son was only a few years behind. A local gun shop had two of them. One in .243 and one in .250 Savage. Both were excellent chamberings for Texas deer hunting, especially for younger hunters. They had a good price on them, so I bought both. I added a Leupold M8-2.5x scope to each. They are still in use by my sons and grandsons. Beautiful rifles.

Great decision on the 2 RSIs! There isn't a more elegant and fast handling rifle out there. The tang safety is fine - I never had an issue with them and the position on the tang is ideal. Take care and good shooting!
@garyK.45ACP
@garyK.45ACP 3 жыл бұрын
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thank you. Yes, the placement is ideal, but I did prefer the ability of the Mark II to unload with the safety in the ON position. Not really an issue if you follow basic safe gun handling rules. And FWIW, I prefer the .250 Savage over the .243, but either work well for the smallish Texas whitetails.

Remington did several "plain Jane" versions of their firearms under the Sportsman name. The Sportsman 48 was the 11-48 shotgun without the checkered stock and engraving. All the parts were the same and function was identical. You have quite the collection.

Mike, I was thinking about your descriptions of the various recoils for these rifles. I usually only shoot heavier recoiling rifles during the cooler hunting months so I'm wearing a jacket or coat. I never worry about any caliber that's been derived from the 30-06 casing or similar power ranges. Heck, even my 375 is enjoyable for a few shots with summer Tshirts. Truthfully, I've never felt any recoil when I was actually taking a shot at a deer, always wrapped up in the moment. Take care and be well.

Nice to see the Ruger. That rifle model was my first rifle and I still have it, in 308 win though. As you say it has a flawless function and the saftey is in its own leauge from other rifles in that price range and it's completley comparable with the best safteys out there. I rely on that saftey for 100% when it's in the rearest position and block the fireingpin. My father who shot Mauser M98 in the Swedish military service said when he hanled this rifle that "It's like a Mauser", and sure it is because it's a very true M-98 action that works just as fine as the original. Now a day I hunt with a Mause M03 but still love my small Ruger in full leangh stock.

Thanks for the excellent video. I own 5 M77 Rugers all but one are the original tang safety model including one RSI in .308. The other is a Mk. II with the three position safety. The first time I shot the rifle the stock seemed somewhat odd to me (the rifle is all original). Since that time I have noticed the same thing in other Mk. II Rugers I have handled. Although the stock is very similar to the original M77s it seems to me that Ruger made some small change to the stock when they went from the original M77 to the Mk. II. For this reason I still prefer the original M77.

I actually prefer a rifle with no floorplate and only for one distinct reason. The guy that owned the gunshop that I grew up in got a tag one year for polar bear. This would've been in the early nineties. The guide flew him around in the Nunavut territory and they found a polar bear. They landed and John took a shot, hit the bear but in the commotion accidently hit the floorplate release(results of wearing heavy clumsy gloves in a drafty plane) and immediately dropped the next three rounds of 375 H&H into three feet of snow. Yes he had several more rounds on his person but that wasn't part of the original plan. The bear ran out of life short of the plane as it was charging but it wasn't by much. He really needed a follow-up shot but it wasn't there. Two of the dropped rounds were recovered but to this day there's still one round of 375 H&H somewhere up there in the tundra. I actually love that Sportsman 78. I've never seen one or heard of one until this video. Another great presentation!!

My first serious hunting rifle was an M77 Mk2 RSI just like that, in .30-06. Another wonderful action, but while mine was initially quite accurate the stock warped and accuracy declined. That very thin barrel didn't help. After several attempts at glass bedding it I eventually gave it to a friend.

They're very fine; yet you're experience is not uncommon. I had a similar situation and borrowed a solution from my Browning BBR. I milled out a groove in the warped full forend and imbedded an aluminum mini I beam in epoxy for as much of the length of the wood that fit. No more warping. It was even lighter. Not for everyone - this kind of work. I'm sure you bought something more stable. Thanks for the note.

A friend of mine brought his Ruger 77 to me because the bolt had become jammed and could not be retracted from the action(A different story as the the cause). Long story short, after dismantling the action I had to remove the tang safety thumb button. It was connected to the trigger with a piece of spring wire, and I thought there was way too much slop. Since this safety only blocks the trigger I told my friend that in my opinion this was not the safest rifle in the world, and I would be glad to find him another rifle with a three position safety that locks the bolt.

Hi Ralph - I remember that wire - and it often falls out when the rifle is disassembled. I ended up buying a Timney for my 77 tang safety. The Mark II and Hawkeye are more positive for sure.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Many thanks for your informed comment. I also have several Ruger no. 1's and love them. I've never disassembled one and often wonder if it has the same type of connecting the tang safety to the trigger.

I have one of the m66s and I’m having a issue with the slide being rather sticky no matter what oil or grease I’ve used, can’t find any info online to help. Try thin Rem oil, gun grease and clean the hell out of the rails and still won’t run smooth. Ran smooth when first purchased but went to oil it the first time and then became almost gummy feeling. Any help appreciated Thanks
