Being from Maine, I spend a lot of time in the NMW. Next time you come up, head to Portage and spend a night at Fish River Falls. I was stationed at Loring AFB and camped many many time there and Car Pond. You can enter the NMW in Ashland or Portage and stay off road and hit the 6 mile check point also. Great video. Reach out on your next visit.

Nice Video Cosmo. We love Northern Maine. My Dad retired to Greenville and he loved the Moosehead Lake area til he passed. Great camping, hiking, and fly fishing. 30+ years ago, my wife and I would camp at Casey’s Spencer Bay campground, and we’d fly fish The Roach River for land locked Salmon. Casey taught me to tie a fly called the “Montreal Whore”. I have tied it a hundred times over the years, and caught many fish on it. Lots fun getting to know some of the folks up there. I’ll swap stories with ya sometime. Thx for sharing the experience.

My heart was in my stomach until I saw the daylight. I don’t worry about the roads, nature, weather or vehicle, etc., but all I could think of is some crazy nut job finding you. OMG, it was like a short thriller movie. So happy you’re safe. (The mom in me… ❤️). PS: I have two of my cousins following you now. We are all in a build list for our teardrops. I get mine soon. Ha ha ha. Giving a twinge of excitement eh. I was so well rested I could not sleep and on a lark decided to leave. I knew I was not going to fall back asleep and I was packed to leave the next day. So I just moved it up a bit. I drove all night and was worried I would be sucked into the underworld in some of those wet spots. How we handle our fears determines where we go with the rest of our lives. Experience adventure or be limited by the fear of it? This was actually fun. While I drove all night I did not cover much ground at 2 Miles per hour. I can wait to see your trailer gathering with the family. Adventure awaits you. Its safer than you think. Less that one Black Bear attack a year and that is always provoked by foolish humans. 17,000 human/human murders a year. You are safer out in the wilderness with nuts like me! Hi Gary! Ya quite an operation. The sound drop outs in that section of video were me swearing off paper towels, napkins, and printer paper! I chose sardines as emergency food for that reason. H Michael Camp-Inn was my other top choice while shopping. I am polyamory with Vistabule and Camp-Inn. Both set the standard for other makers to aspire to. Drone sounds like a great idea. In Maine North Woods I was miles down the road before it ended… I wish I was not so focused on getting out of the jams I got myself into and had videoed some of the situations I got out of like driving thru a field of 5 ft high bushes to turn the trailer around. I ripped a molding off the trailer on that one. But I was very happy to see the repair at Vistabule and the measures they take to waterproof all work. I had a chance to see the inside wood after 5 years of not so gentile use. It was perfect! These trailers Vistabule and Camp-Inn are destined to be collectables in the future like classic cars. Thanks for dropping in. Much appreciated. Happy New Year. =Cosmo

Northern Maine Woods logging roads line Golden Road best to carry two spares, very rough shale. Logging roads constantly changing so have plenty of spare gas as not much up there. TomTom gps is very good for off grid as it's satellite based and not relying on data connection which is mostly non-existent off grid areas. Gaia also but doesn't always work and it's also satellite based. Night driving not ideal driving with large moose out there, largest population in US lower 48.

Awesome cosmo! What a great adventure. Thank you for letting us tag a long. Quick question, do you do anything in regards to fuel reserves for the Subaru? How was that to manage?
@CosmoWeems3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew. Thanks for bring this up. It’s an important point. As I bumped into other explorers and hunters, the comment came up “are you OK on fuel?" Sort of like have a nice day in the Maine North Woods.If you pass someone stopped you slow and make sure they are OK. I carry a silicone hose ½ diameter, just in case i need to siphon. I did not carry a fuel can but I did see some people with one. I fueled up right before entering the MNW and squeezed in every last drop (rocking the car). For the entire trip NJ to Maine, exploring and back to NJ I averaged 21MPG. The Outback has an 18.5 gal. tank so my range in the woods was about 388 miles. I burned ¾ of the woods tank which means I drove about 291 mile in the woods. My strategy was to leave many points in my GPS so I could get out without wandering if I needed to. Other than that I loved getting lost. After a number of days in an area I got a little better at navigating (but still got bewildered and had to find my way out). GREAT FUN highly recommended if you are that kind of explorer. 𝕋𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕜 𝕐𝕠𝕦 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕨𝕒𝕥𝕔𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘! ✅ Check my other videos kzbin.infovideos SUBSCRIBE kzbin.info =𝓒𝓸𝓼𝓶𝓸 ✅

Really enjoyed this video Cosmo I also carry a tire plug kit I just think it's a good idea when in remote areas.over all it looks like you had milder temps then we did on our trip ,it was not real enjoyable when we cooked our meals fighting the cold and wind that we had but it made the trip memorable lol, by the way how are the trailer tires holding up .are they still the original s ? Until next time take care and will be watching for your next vid.
@CosmoWeems3 жыл бұрын
Ha ha I did not realize how worn down the tires were They are the originals with 42k miles on them. BUT the tires and Subi got me thru. I was not the only person who had a flat. Weather went down to low 30s some nights. I lucked out with mild temps most of the time. But as I left the area I could smell the cold coming. Trailer tires are in very good shape (so far) I will be keeping an eye on them too. I was thinking about the "hope in a bottle" tire sealer stuff as an added measure of protection for the car and the trailer. I averaged 21 MPG on my trip (I have to keep it below 70MPH or the mileage goes in the crapper. At 55 - 60 I can get 24 MPG. I am wondering what you averaged on the cross country trek? Regards =Cosmo
@duanerichardson54053 жыл бұрын
To be honest Cosmo I hate to admit it but I didn't even track the fuel mileage as to go that distance was more of a mission so we could have a reasonable amount of time for visiting my dad in BC and then our daughter in Alberta as I only had a two week vacation but overall all it was about as expected I would say .oh and the gross weight of the trailer was 1.350 lbs .

I generally do not allow my vehicle tires to get that worn down. Not only do they have decreased traction and water channeling, the puncture resistance is poor, as you're finding out. No need for 10 ply tires, it will ride like a 1-ton truck if you do. Tires, like everything else these days, it's hard to predict quality and Longevity like we used to be able to do in the old days. I suggest you check out the Subaru forums online and find out what they're having the best success with. For safety and peace of mind, at two-thirds worn, mine get replaced.
@CosmoWeems3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Reuben These are the original stock tires. I have 42K on the Outback and they are due. I agree with all your points. I picked a Subi because pickup did not make sense for most of my driving and am avoiding off road tires for the same reason. The Yokahamas have been good to me. I will replace them soon probably with a middle of the road tire (some tire punning) like an all season tire etc. They are much quieter on the road. I droe 1500 miles on this trip and got 21 MPG towing which is very good. When I am not towing I can get 34 on the highway. LOVE it with these high gas prices. @CosmoWeems3 жыл бұрын
Thanks D&J. Funny 20 days alone is an interesting exercise all by itself. I meditate and do other stuff which made it extra easy for me to enjoy fabulous nature. I damaged the trailer a tiny bit. I am having it fixed. Its a simple repair. I pushed the car and trailer beyond intended use design. No regrets. Regards =Cosmo

Wow! That's some real boondocking! I don't think I'd ever get to that level but you never know. I'm really considering a tear drop and Vistabule seems to be super well made but on the high end. After watching your in person review of the Bushwhacker with, sorry can't remember his name, I'm eliminating that brand. For now, I'll stay at campgrounds but have zero experience and am not all that handy. Would love to have a conversation with you because I'm nearly ready to purchase. How can I message you and talk privately?

Hi Barry. It took me a year to decide on a teardrop trailer. I looked at them all and had to make sure it was what I wanted. Vistabule and Camp-Inn are on the high end on the lower end you can check these - there are many more of course. kzbin.info/aero/PLVxlmS-2xmBV-q8vfGzKU4EVY3R3PcIXv I would chew on it a bit and come up with a budget your are comfortable with. Also tow vehicle must be able to pull your decision. You can email me at cosmoweems@hotmail.com My videos are about using the rigs but I do show a lot of rigs too. @CosmoWeems3 жыл бұрын
Ha! If you add up all the recommendations in the video I am above that. I had one handle fail so I recommend backups. AS long as you have enough you are good to go. A silly $7 plug kit can save a lot of money and time. I started using them so I would not have to leave the tire off and pick it up again (an all day affair). I have patched tires on the car and did not have to remove the tire in some cases. Regards =Cosmo 𝕋𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕜 𝕐𝕠𝕦 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕨𝕒𝕥𝕔𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘! ✅ Check my other videos kzbin.infovideos SUBSCRIBE kzbin.info =𝓒𝓸𝓼𝓶𝓸 ✅

Have you ever tried Arkansas? Since you like to have space. 10,000 square miles more then Ohio but 3 million people instead of 11 million. Alot of big state parks that was practically empty in Arkansas. Ohio campgrounds are always freaking packed for some reason.

How long did you drive late at night? I have driven off roads at night after the leaves have fallen. Do you have a winch?
@CosmoWeems3 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg. I could not sleep so I hit the dirt. I had to drive all night which I did not mind. Its was a great experience. It does get a bit tense wondering what else the road has in store for me at times. Ha ha ha. I was very well rested so the nocturnal exploring was fun. No winch if I got stuck on the videoed section I would have been in a jam. That is a very seldom traveled area in my opinion I would have had to use the Satellite communicator to get help. I worked out rescue plans in advance with my team (friends at home). The communicator sends GPS coordinates and a map of exactly where I am. WONDERFUL device. Most off road people don't do this with a single vehicle alone. Tow vehicles can put themselves out with the tow straps. 𝕋𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕜 𝕐𝕠𝕦 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕨𝕒𝕥𝕔𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘 and contributing! =𝓒𝓸𝓼𝓶𝓸 ✅

Just curious. Can you average 20 plus MPG or more towing the camper on the interstate? How does that CVT do while towing? I’m asking because I hear so many horror stories from people who had a CVT and towed. Thanks
@CosmoWeems2 жыл бұрын
My Subi is a 2018. 50K miles on it and I have towed a lot on and off road. No issues. Since I am towing I change fluids more than the average driver who does not tow. I have ranged between 16 and 26MPG. Terrain and highway speed have a big impact on mileage. @65MPH 20 or better is common. At 70 or 75 its not! How does the Subaru handle going up hills/mountains when towing on the highway and on soft roads?
@CosmoWeems3 жыл бұрын
My car is a 4 cylinder (no turbo). Reliability is 100% so far. I have not crossed the Rocky mountains. Here in the east its a very good match for my trailer. I take it easy and I beefed up the suspension (mildly) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3PLaKKbjtOesNk Its important to remain within the capacity of the car. Meaning dont exceed the tongue weight. Dont exceed the cargo capacity in weight. Overall I rate the car perfect for what I am doing. Unfortunately the suspension does not allow for air bags which would be an improvement. The car has 8.75 inches of ground clearance which is excellent. I get 36 MPG on highway not towing. 28 mixed not towing. 20 to 24 towing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWqZnXpqec19r9E. Traction has proven to be excellent in all conditions. However I do carry traction boards and a tow strap. Common sense is a good thing to carry too! There’s a lot going on in this video. I love the reader comments also. Boy, you are brave not carrying at least a 2.5 gallon fuel can. You never know,… you may help some one else out also. @21mpg that would carry you about an extra 50 miles to the next trouble. Heck… you could even power a Coleman stove or lantern with the dual fuel?! Did you take your HAM radio equipment with you? Considering the lack of cell coverage, seems to me that could be handy. Actually since there are hunters and pick up trux out and about, a CB in the trailer could be fun & handy too…. Probably some good stories on the air??????... 2am,… time to move… really? Really???! ((100 miles to Chicago It’s dark We’re wearing sunglasses Hit it!)) What possessed you to pull up stakes at 2am!? Unacceptable bathrooms? Black bears?? Sasquatch??? Pig squealing???? Rowdy banjo music????? I see the rear passenger quarter panel has a “lasting impression” on it…. Care to share????? Good stuff Cosmo…. Love the light comically side of your camp outs. Makes me want to go out and get a rig and “take off ay”? Take off to the great white north. If they ever figure out this car pandemic we are having… (no chips for you)… maybe I could get a Tacoma, Colorado, Ranger… or Fiat(jeep) …Gladiator????? I have a dodge caravan right now…. Been threatening to turn the back half into a teardrop configuration with the hatch. Insides have 4x8 size room inside. Twin cargo doors… It would be a class “A” Mini! ( or a mini A) Could be very stealthy for those late night… find a parking ramp to spend the night kinda moves while on the road between destinations. I would absolutely love to do that trip…. The same time of year you are doing it!! Nice view of the waves pounding the shore line too by the way. (From here to eternity) Happy Trails!

Thanks Michael. Ya I kept a close eye on fuel and reserving enough to get out to services was baked in. I used the GPS to create a path out while I was on my way in so I had an idea of when to leave for fuel. Having said that I had enough for the entire wilderness time. I am a HAM radio operator but did not bring my HF equipment. When I go back I will take it. I love operating in remote areas. Great entertainment. I carry a backup stove and other gear. The stove allows me to cook away from the trailer when I am in the mood. The loggers use a frequency that is posted on the roads. Its slips my mind now. I thing its FM. Ya know I could not sleep and I was packed to leave the next morning. So rather than try and sleep all night I hit the trails. No regrets. But slow go! Minor damage to car and trailer - that’s a story to share over a beer. I have to travel next week and I am pretty sure I will be doing some black top camping. Trailer is not to stealthy but I have pulled into a number of places and had a good night sleep unnoticed. Thanks so much for your comments. It put me back in Maine! Regard =Cosmo
