The latter two are definitely more recent and surplus to requirements, but guys and gals both need a break now and then so a kitchen and/or area to gather in is beneficial to keeping people productive. PR Departments == Marketing, always been around. HR departments it depends, I've worked in a few large companies and the turnaround, and sheer volume of drama, really do make managing staff and compliance requirements a full time job. Anything under full scale enterprise (several hundred people) not really needed though.

If you're truly unhappy and not having a good life then you need to find or build one. I *LITERALLY* made my missus go get a better-paid job than mine, then I quit to take care of the kids. 4 years on and the b*tching and moaning hasn't stopped, but now she is the breadwinner - working reeeeal hard - and has to fork over 95% of her earnings to pay the bills.
