Today I'm pruning my "Too Little Leaf" Ficus benjamina, my Ficus rumphii, my cascade style Lemon tree, my Nightshade (Solanum dulcamara) bonsai and my Russian Olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia).

Great narrative of your decision making process Nigel...Such a great trunk and so well proportioned overall...A really nice little tree...Tweezers, compost pile, been there, done that, but I couldn't find my tweezers...Really like the cascade lemon tree...Great pot for the Night Shade...Really compliments the tree...Great video...Thanks for sharing...

I really love that Lemon Cascade Nigel. Funnily enough my last surviving lemon cutting is actually looking pretty good...so I am afraid to touch it! I just gave my Tigerbark Ficus a 'clip and grow' pruning too :)

Hey nigel! I find those bittersweet nightshade vines everywhere! I'll have to keep one next time! I had the idea to bonsai one a few years ago but in the bin it went. Yours looks very nice

The lemon tree is very hansom. By style definition, it is what would be called a windswept tree. a semi cascade would have a lower branch that was below the rim of the pot. a full cascade tree would have the apex below the feet of the pot.

Wire tends to scar up the branches and I'm happy to continue developing the tree with clip and grow.

Hello Stephen!! Yes I have read the book, it's fantastic. It seems we both encourage people to be inspired by the trees around them and enjoy the same natural styling for your bonsai. I loved the pictures in the book too, fantastic trees in beautiful natural styles of Australia. Usually when I look at trees in bonsai books, I always wish the styling were more tree like and less bonsai like. Not the trees in your book, I wouldn't change a single thing about them! Thanks so much for creating your book, it's a real treasure!!

In my opinion you are abusing of the blue scissors. Recently you criticized Mauro Stemberg for his approximative pruning of the roots, but you are doing almost the same with the branches, which is worse. Ok, you then do a finer pruning, but the blue scissor part is really bad to me

No, I profile prune with the blue scissors, then I go in and refine the branch structure. This is the important step that is missing with just profile pruning or just trimming the outside of the root base. It's not abuse, it's an excellent technique that creates a wonderful tree!
