In my opinion, if Planetside 3 is going to thrive, they need to make the big jump when they're ready. Planetside 2 still has some major flaws that need ironing out, either while we still have it or as a fresh introduction to Planetside 3, especially when it comes to the new player experience. If they can nail long-term engagement, the rest of it falls into place.

At this point, it'd be better overall if they just bit the bullet and started now. It shouldn't go the route of WW2 Online and wait another 10 years to port to a new engine. They could come up with better concepts to handle the flow of battle and low population especially. They could reimagine all of the continents with an ongoing "Story system" that leans into campaigns. They could just downright modernize confusing aspects of "high tech nanofabrication" like the lack of turret stabilization, vehicles using internal combustion, just brush up all of this. It would be the perfect opportunity to take the construction system into greatness by QoL'ing the piss out of it. Buildings all have snap-to, large foundations to build upon could be added. You get my point. PS 2 is a good game that's held back by its development history. The code is extremely unfriendly to work with and fix, and the engine sucks. The IP is rock solid!

the gameplay is perfect minus a few broken and annoying features that just need minor nudges up or down to be decent the only think that can be brought to ps3 is map changes game modes graphical improvements/optimizations and a few more QOF things that modern games have now on a new engine which will be a pain in the ass so if theres no competition and the game has a rock solid community willing to fork out cash then there is no point making ps3

you hit the nail on the head. PS2’s biggest flaw is how much trust it puts in the players with how much data it leaves the client to decide. Back when PS2 was released, bandwidth was a major stopping block for players to have a good gaming experience but now with cloud technologies and AI models can overcome this and the game can be 99% secured on the server side. That’s my hope for a PS3 anyway

Another thing that makes Planetside 2 great is that it's in the future. Yes, I personally like futuristic game settings. But what this really does is it makes it more realistic to have these outlandish weapon platforms that would be totally out of place in a game set in our current time or in the past. Why this is important for a MMO FPS is because you have such a massive server of players, if everybody was locked to the same pool of 20ish weapons because of the limits of technology in that era, you start to produce repeat gameplay that will get old. Planetside 2 does well in this area offering a diverse group of weapons, playstyles, and platforms that wouldn't be able to exist in a 2023 setting. Cloaking, planes hovering, and orbital strikes come to mind. You can even go more wild with cosmetics in Planetside because, well, it's in the future. You can make cyclops helmets, futuristic helmets, and glowing armor that don't break the rules of realism or fitting in the game because of the setting. This is also important because players need to be able to create a cosmetic identity in this game crowded with tons of players to feel unique from each other. Rainbow Six Siege is an example of a game that throws futuristic or unrealistic weapons and abilities in the game and it totally ruins the aesthetic. It started when they released Jackal with his foot sniffing ability, which is simply impossible even 15 years out from now. It's just gotten more and more outlandish with time and it's not enjoyable. They even add crazy cosmetics now which make no sense and really ruin the "tactical operator/SWAT" vibe the game had initially. Planetside 2 really just has a few key issues in other areas that I believe to be near impossible to resolve because of the game format. Simply put, a new player is going to need a lot of time to understand the hex and map system, empty fights, why zergs form, etc. A confused player isn't going to be a player for long at all. Lobby games make it easy for a dummy to figure things out fast. Frankly, WW2 and modern era games saturate the market and I have no desire to pick up another one. We all know what an M1 Carbine is. I'm done looking down iron sights. I don't want another Pershing tank or Abrams when I can have a Magrider.

I would say the rise of battle royales, tailoring others towards smaller team 6v6 or less battles, on top of the failures of BF2042 and others to capture and retain players has caused a vacuum in the FPS genre that Battlebit is filling. As someone not drawn to BR and tired of smaller team deathmatch style gameplay, games like Battlebit that is working that gap from big team battle to MMOFPS is compelling.

MMOFPS is an inevitable obvious big genre, but not necessarily before the tech can support high fidelity battlefields with ~10k+ players (perhaps/probably with NPCs) with good gameplay and clever balance and incentive systems. Unfortunately, we're way off on the tech and still have to deal with compromises, a lot of the market still isn't far beyond CS:GO. Running Warzone's 150-player maps is still a struggle for many. But Battlebit's low-spec 254 seems fine for those willing to accept a compromised experience.

I see the next big MMOFPS as a hybrid game that defies norms. I'm thinking something along the lines of Ravenfield, Planetside, and Battlefield all mixed into this goofy concoction that people want to play but don't yet know that they want it. It will require the visceral FPS gameplay mixed with Planetside 2's longevity progression i.e. directives and account progression. It's out there, ready for the taking.

Whenever I look at Battlebit, I'm just reminded of playing Ace of Spades beta, which was great, but also not the experience that draws me to Planetside 2. The thing that makes it an MMO is really in allowing a kitchen sink of game features to coexist - it's not "lots of players", but also "lots of players and big maps and character customization and..." So the things that make it impractical, unbalanced and hard to learn are also tied to the things that make it a sticky experience with no competition. This isn't necessarily as bad as it seems, there are a lot of complex hobbies out there. A game being unique and semi-niche in this way makes it more like someone learning, e.g., riichi mahjong - something where you have to spend at least a few hours deciphering rules to start seriously getting into the gameplay. It just means that it doesn't pick up the casual side of the marketplace. And WWII Online is fine, but also by definition tends towards being a dry simulation of "x is this way because that's how it was in history". I like having a sci-fi setting as the justification for the game allowing things to be wacky and experimental.

There is absolutely a reason to invest in this genre even if nothing threatening is on the horizon. Eventually, someone with enough resources will take a look at mmofps games, categorize what’s good and what’s bad and make their own game. Inevitably, one of those will stick and take the crown. The problems are known to planetside and solution is simple: put money in now, so it right, and they will earn it all back AND more. It’s easier to keep a monopoly on something than create one out of nothing.

Battlebit is running hot right now because EA dropped the ball on BF2042. If BF2042 came out being basically BF3/4 with better graphics Battlebit would be rarely talked about, but alas here we are. Battlebit is filling a gaping hole that the BF franchise has left wide open. The closest thing to Planetside 2 is Foxhole, but many FPS players get turned off by the asymmetric top view combat. A game like Planetside 2 is hard to pull off without significant funding due to the development and infrastructure cost so you really don't see indie companies trying to chase that goose and AAA companies are seemingly uninterested.

They always copy the business model that works, nobody would spend time and money on something that is not profitable, that is why it has no competitors ps2. Now who would be dumb enough to copy a business model that didn't work for 10 years in the middle of an economic downturn to create a ps3 or something?

@ 07:58 - There's a couple of reasons that BattleBit players aren't coming back to Planetside 2 in the interim waiting period. For one, it's because a lot of them have been there, done that, and they aren't willing to deal with Planetside 2's problems. Sure, you could argue that BattleBit shares market space with Planetside because it has large scale battles, but BattleBit also focuses on addressing a LOT of the problems that Planetside carries. Vehicles are limited in number and can't be spammed beyond what the map/objectives can handle. Spawn camping is minimal because the objectives are large enough to house the fights the game offers. And in addition, the balance is far better from the perspective of a new player. There's no: • Cloakers one-framing you from cloak that hasn't actually de-cloaked on your screen • MAX Suits being abused • A2G explosive weapons that deny you movement options The reason helicopters in BattleBit were so celebrated is because they were implemented carefully, and in a reserved way that still added something to the game. Helicopters are extremely powerful with a good crew, but they aren't going to be frustrating to deal with like a Bulldog galaxy is sitting on the top of a hill. In addition to all this - BattleBit is accessible. You touched on this briefly, but BattleBit's focus on low-poly graphics allow for 'high tick-rate servers' while supporting the player count. This makes the gunplay feel responsive, and it ensures that players who don't have the best specs can still run the game. It's a focus on 'functionality over form' is a balance that MANY have gotten wrong over the years, and gamers are welcoming the shift in focus. The very critique on the look of the game is the reason it is popular. Planetside 2's visual fidelity, while it is great for those who choose to utilize it, is far from perfect from actually running the game.

Thanks for bringing a couple games to my attention. As much as I love Planetside, I feel like it has run it's course and I wish there was something else in the genre for me to move to. I was also excited by the idea of Eternal Crusade, but the product simply was not what was advertised. That, and as cool as the Warhammer universe is, I gather Games Workshop are an absolute nightmare to deal with for anyone who wants to make a product with their license. I've even heard a rumour that Blizzard's first big RTS title Warcraft Orcs and Humans was meant to be a Warhammer game, but GW dicked them around on the negotiations so hard that Blizzard walked. Imagine missing out on getting in on Blizzard money by being greedy.

If ps2 ran as well as battlebit it would certainly have a bigger player count, i barely crack 40 fps in 96v96 battles in ps2 and the fact that your weapons rpm is tied to youe fps is unsettling, while in battlebit i have to cap my fps to 144 to not stress my gpu as much on ultra settings and i never had any noticable fps drops, and imo the low poly aesthetic is somewhat nostalgic as i played a lot of Minecraft and unturned in the past, and the best feature is being able to talk to your enemies, its hilarious! Just a great Friday night with the boys type of game that anyone can get into

When they make Planetside 3, they need to address the major problems. The first is map design. We have so many recycled bases and buildings and that's unacceptable for any new game. More dev time would have to go into making each base more unique, and preferably larger. The player favourite bases are the big ones with flanking opportunities and ever-changing battle lines. Bases should not be "competitive" or equal for attackers or defenders. If anything, bases should always be in the favour of defenders to encourage escalating the fight and increasing the player count. Above all, they have to be fun and exciting the first time as well as the hundredth.

It had been a while since I logged on to PS2, but I did for a bit during prime time this weekend and it was pretty packed with people, but it was hard to make it to a viable map where there were any kind of fights I would want to be in. I was either locked out of an alert or had to go to a slaughter fest, which for me isn’t enjoyable to be on either side of a steamroll. The biggest problem I have is getting friends to play. I don’t tend to fit well with people I don’t have a lot of gaming time with, and joining a bunch of rando’s never works out for me long term. I still love this game with all my heart, but it’s been a hard sell getting friends into it when they don’t want to pay for a membership, but end up stuck in the sanctuary or on dead continents, and not getting to play to a level that is fun enough to convince them to buy in. I think the population locking solved a lot of issues, but they haven’t done a good enough job of mitigating the issues that it caused. I think they should leave all the continents unlocked and find a way to combine them into the overall battle map, kind of like ghost capping used to play out. Better than some stupid AI storm roaming around anyway.

WW2 Online is a WW2 game, a period I don't like, and Battlebit is NOT an MMOFPS, I remember when people used to call Destiny, Warframe and The Division MMOs just because they had RPG mechanics, they are good games, but they don't have anything massive. I just hope that someone heavily invest in the Planetside franchise (or just a new IP in the genre) and gives MMOFPS to the masses, I really think it could be a success, Battle Royale made it with much less.

I think there's probably a couple of reasons why the Battlebit beta audience aren't coming to PS2. PS2 is an old game and it shows, and it's got, uh... a _lot_ of bullshit. If people in the Battlebit community weren't already familiar with this game, they're going to be running into the same brick walls that cause the general NPE to be such a slog for newcomers. There's also the different genres to consider. Battlebit's a military game, and PS2 is a sci-fi game. While there'll certainly be people who are going to try any FPS without worrying about which genre it's in, there'll also be people who _only_ want one or the other. I'm certainly not about to give up my floating tanks and lasers and justifiable reasons for the amount of identical corpses I've left on Auraxis in favour of yet another military shooter. Still, a move back into the same rough areas as an MMOFPS in terms of the specific subgenre that's the order of the day is a good thing. I doubt PS3 is coming without some hefty competition to convince the investors to take a chance on supporting the development of a sequel, especially after DBG blew their previous attempt at a follow-up so hard. It also means my personal ideal game of a Transformers-derived MMO shooter is slightly more viable again.
