Testing the actual usefulness of Meshtastic once again from the mountainous Brecon Beacons in South Wales UK. I also took a handheld CB radio and a PMR446 radio too!
I'd set up a very basic temporary base node (Heltec V3) on the roof of my car at the camp site and whilst out on the hills, I sent a few messages back to base via Meshtastic direct messaging and I also sent out a message via the Longfast channel.
Local Bluetooth connectivity to the tablet at base was dysfunctional, so I now use WiFi to connect with the app and this works fine. Plans are afoot to improve the base node with a better antenna and to tidy-up the external enclosure install.

Hi Al - it's going to be a useful extra comms option when there's no phone signal in these places I find myself in - the back to base messaging will be good for when I go away with Mrs.104. Cheers.

Loving this Meshtastic content G. I had no idea about it until you started covering it. Another blinder of a video from the Mighty 104. 👊

The messaging and optional GPS tracking is great for this sort of trekking stuff! You just need to know it's capabilities and plan your expectations and use cases around that. Cheers.

my node is on your list kidderminster node simple pcb dipole from a design someone put online meant for lorawan type things, its blocked to the west by my house. The mesh around here is very hit and miss but when it works it goes far seen south wales and Manchester quite a few times. You were seeing me via clows top yagi n4b pointing at Birmingham and another node in Stourbridge hence the two hops showing i have seen your node a couple of times and gotten some messages you have sent but too many hops to reach you and yes changing the node name is one of the most reliable way of getting a message out its how i made a contact with a node in Gloucester which turn out to be someone from Germany on holiday

Hi - thanks for the comment! Good to know I'm 'getting out' so to speak! After the initial hype and euphoria which, at least in some areas, caused saturation on the frequency, Meshtastic is settling down to be a viable form of comms. System is improving all the time with updates and I'm looking forward to doing some more testing on the south coast of England soon. Cheers.
