One ball away isn't necessarily as close as you think: Balls are numbered 1 to 14. If you're only assigned one of the remaining numbers, you have a 1/14 chance (~7.1%) Obviously your team might have several winning combinations, but each winning ball gives you ~7/1% more. Without knowing which teams were assigned all of the remaining numbers, there's no way to know how close your team came.

As an Oilers fan, if Marner is the first to go from the Leafs, that is just the best. There's no way the Leafs get better if you commit to Matthews over Marner, but hey, what do I know, I just watch all the Leafs games as well as many other teams and it's so clear that Marner is the driver.

He definitely was the leafs best player this past season, but the problem with the team as a whole is consistency. You can point to almost any player on this team and find a game or where they were the best Toronto player on the ice as well as games where they played horribly and led to a loss. If you ask me, getting rid of one player wont fix the issue no matter who it is because the system as a whole needs to be thrown out. All of the players on this team are incredibly capable, but they never show up as a team when they need to.

Finally! Fans that understand how VALUABLE Marner is to this team. I never understood the Marner hate either. It's like Leaf fans are so blind. Marner has been the Leafs best player for a few years now. He pretty much does it all for this team except play goalie and yet people still don't see his worth. He's our best setup man in PP, he's our best Penalty Killer, he's easily a 90+ (dare I say 100+ point player easy), he can get you 30 goals. When another of the core 4 is on a slump what do they do? They put Marner on their line. What more do people want from him. You can tell he loves this team and does it all. Trading away Marner would be the BIGGEST mistake Leafs ever make.

The comments about "it's never the stars who aren't looked out for"- that's not universally true. The US women's gymnastics situation proves that being a star doesn't necessarily protect someone from egregious violations, and stars are absolutely still subject to systemic issues- being expected to play through injury, having the team decide on their medical decisions.

Call me crazy, but as a Flyers fan, I’m somewhat optimistic. I think Briere is a really smart guy and would’ve been better than any of the recently fired squad (Hextall, Treliving, etc.). He’s the first guy in charge of the Flyers for a while to mention the word rebuild. As for Keith Jones, I really just hope that he’s able to do his job without interference from the “wise men”. I think if that happens, he’ll be fine. I also don’t understand why people are complaining that both these guys previously played for the Flyers. The guy they just fired in Fletcher didn’t, which people seem to somewhat be forgetting, so does playing for the team or not really make a difference? Both these guys seem at the very least more competent compared than Fletcher as well as being extremely passionate so I say just give them a chance

I think there are some teams with such a strong identity that it becomes important to have management who are ex-team. The Broad Street Bullies are just such a team. That said, I never thought Hextall was right for the job. But nobody asked me.

I agree that the Core's mix doesn't work. They individually may all get their rings on separate teams, but not together. In playoff situations, they need babysitters and wont stand for one another. McJesus was prepared to get rough on behalf of Leon, none of the 4 would do it for their line-mates (see the reaction to Knies being dropped......) And from a fan's perspective, I would not have been as mad about them being 3 down, if they had shown some pushback. Prevented from playing + can't fight = will not go anywhere together.

I think a lot of the advanced stats stuff you guys were talking about is actually a case of pushback. When you have everyone moaning and bitching about how the Leafs suck and the Panthers are amazing while ignoring the reality in front of their face it's only natural to point out how badly the Leafs spanked the Panthers everywhere but the scoreboard. I have no issue with the idea that results are all that matter but at the same time you can't cry about how "the Leafs lost because they suck and suck because they lost" when that's 100% false (at least for games 1 & 2, game 3 was a pathetic trainwreck).

Sorry Adam, you are dead wrong on the best leaf from round 1. That was Rielly 100% and it's not even close. Dude stepped up his game, fought and was getting involved in the mess. He threw big hits (shocking I know) and played better defensively, blocking shots and breaking up rush chances. He was way better in the 2 way play. He had great first passes and zone exits, so far as being one of the only capable leafs on the backend to exit the zone through skating or passing. He stepped up and said the right things and he found ways to position himself better defensively than he had all year. Top this with how Rielly has consistently shown up in playoffs year over year, you can't argue who is TOR's best player in the 1st round. He's even playing well enough for consideration this 2nd round, you know, if they do the thing. Everyone always wants to say that teams need their "hedman"' type players in order to win. Well I think Rielly has done enough and proven enough this year to be considered comparable. Sure not as good but exactly what the leafs need right now and delivering. People need to start giving Rielly his dues. He's also the only one of the "core" who took a discount. Sure he's making more than Nylander but sorry, he's your top pair D, and has been for years. He's your best D skill / talent wise and has been for years. He's playing D as a position and on average 10 more minutes a game than Nylander so like... of course he should make more. The fact it's not substantially more should tell you something about how valuable he is to this team. In another world, I would believe Rielly could have been Captain of the leafs. And let's face it, leafs missed a golden chance to literally have "Captain Morgan" for years as a saying. There's still time when JT hands it over.
