Funny thing is that Ristar was actually designed using Sonic’s original concept: the concept started off as a game where you play as a rabbit who grabs enemies and objects with his ears. This was eventually used as the concept for Ristar in 1995.

In case anyone doesn't know...Ristar was one of the designs submitted for the same internal Sega platforming mascot competition that resulted in the creation of Sonic to begin with (as was Robotnik...who was originally Teddy Roosevelt in pajamas...no, I'm not kidding).

Ristar isn't a Sonic rip-off but it was almost a Sonic game. The concept for Ristar's stretchy limbs came from possible designs SEGA had for their Alex Kidd replacement. The one in question was a rabbit who could stretch its ears and use them to climb objects, as well as grab and throw enemies much like Ristar does.
