Arrival

Күн бұрын

The Arrival Bus has been created to revolutionise the market, not just because it is an electric bus built from the ground up, but also because it takes into account everyone that will come into contact with it.
From drivers and passengers, to cleaners, fleet managers, other road users and more, the Arrival Bus has been designed for them all. That is why it is vital that we get their feedback during the design process and ensure their needs are met to provide a better end-to-end experience than ever seen before on public transport.

I get that these videos are more advertisements than documentaries but as a designer it would be super interesting to see all the small ways that the current iterations of your products are failing, how design researchers are finding these when interacting with users, and how these issues are being addressed!

WOW. Who were the 23 people who gave this a thumbs down? As an network administrator and consumer as well as someone very interested in EV's this type of program from a company is what everyone should be doing. You can build a bus, it can be EV, it can seat however many people you want it to seat. Depending on battery tech you will get whatever charge from it BUT if it isn't user friendly to a vast array of customers then it's a waste of time, talent and money spent on it.

I hope it comes to your place. In Germany these kind of features are normal for a public Bus. There is almost always a ramp to get into and out with a wheelchair and free space inside for strollers, wheelchairs etc. Stops are displayed and announced. My only reaction was at the end of the video "what is so new about that". The new thing for me is only the electric Bus that leads to more space inside.
@Horizon301.
@Horizon301. 3 жыл бұрын
@@j.metzger1730 a lot of it isn’t new here in the UK either. It’s just improving various parts, of course buses have ramps and spaces for proms and wheelchairs. The voice announcements aren’t used though I don’t believe, or it may be dependent on the operator

Given that there's a big push in North America to modernize public transit systems, I think 3D printed electric buses are a pretty solid investment. Out of every EV startup, Arrival has to be the most promising due to the fact that the product lineup is so well defined, and built for a market that is very ripe and underserved. Just the fact that Arrival has thought to tackle small delivery vehichles and public transit before personal cars shows that these people have their heads in the right places and they're looking at there the market is actually headed.

I use a shopping trolley. Having to lift it on & off the bus even when the driver lowers the bus down, is a bit of a pain when my shopping trolley is very full. To be able to simply wheel it straight on & off in the same manner that wheelchair users do would be great. Even for elderly users, the simplicity of being able to use a ramp instead of steps is not only a fantastic safety feature (prevents falls) but for many who have limited mobility & don't have someone to take them shopping, a reliably extendable ramp would return a measure of independence & be no longer housebound. I should note that some of our local buses do have extendable ramps but stones frequently get trapped within the mechanism leaving the ramp either unextendable or (unretractable meaning that the bus & passengers are stranded until an engineer or replacement bus can be sourced) thus drivers have stopped offering & in many cases, refusing the use of the ramps.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 3 жыл бұрын
It’s so satisfying to see other good comments about the ramps on this video. On the earlier one, it was just full of naysayers who didn’t use mobility aids and evidently didn’t even have family who use them, because 99% of them were just “there’s nothing wrong with a simple manual ramp like all buses have to have by law!”. I tried to set a few of them straight but the armchair experts just doubled down insisting that this ramp is a bad idea. I was somewhat worried it might have influenced Arrival‘a decisions, such as adding a manual one for cheaper for the bus companies, even though the real life tests would have universally praised it. But now this video, and the better response on it, has me hoping more that they’ll keep the powered ramp as the only option. Fingers crossed!

Very thoughtful... One thing that would benefit all users would be to add, as standard, tinted/Anti-UV glass to help those siting on the side where the sun is blasting through the glass in the mornings and afternoon/evenings. I travel weekdays on rickerty old buses (that are the mainsty of the services in the area I travel in (and that's a major bus company)) and I chose the wrong side to sit on... The glare was dreadful as the sun blasted through the windows.

Amazing! In Sydney Australia, they added a screen behind the driver a few years back, but it was useless. All its ever used for is either a 360° view (those "satellite" views in cars when parking) or NSW Transport ads. Going onto a new bus route is scary, so adding having stops displayed is a huge plus.

Arrival dudes, there are a few things you could steal from the buses going around here in Sweden. They put the power source on the roof, so that the floor can be lower to the ground and easier for people to access. They also have two different STOP buttons, one normal and one for elderly, where the bus will tilt down a few inches towards the street so you can get on and off easier.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 3 жыл бұрын
In the UK the buses lean down for all passengers, not just if you press a special button. In an interview they specifically stated they didn’t want the battery in the roof for stability and so passengers at the back didn’t get as queasy around turns. And that’s part of why they have the motorised ramp in the design, too, I presume. Though they also did make a boast about keeping the floor fairly low even with batteries in the floor.

Have you considered the height of the bus overhangs may collide with the raised curbs that are typically found at bus stops especially when pulling in or out at an angle. The entry step onto the bus looks about the same height as a normal kerb so there may be problems deploying the ramp at a raised kerb if the bus height is not sufficient or adjustable. Also, how will you cut down on night-time reflections for the driver on the flat windscreen?

The bus itself almost nothing. The whole infrastructure in the cities should be rebuilt. Fast charging trolley-like stations should come as an additional lane on the roads with instant authorization. Also, buses will shift soon to driverless machines. And it is also should be counted. How would it look like without a driver? How passenger's safety will be held? How can we build those buses twice smaller but cover more individual routes? That is really very important. People should be able to get literally anywhere within 30 minutes intervals. And within 15 minutes intervals to have 5-10 minutes extra walk to a destination.
