OMG Mike, you mentioned me in viewers comments making my day, thank you! Regarding the suggestion of capturing and uploading near-daily unedited video footage of yourself while working at the bench, I may have an alternative solution depending on your willingness to return to social media. Simply take a picture(s) as you reach milestones during the week and post them to Twitter, Instagram, etc, which satisfies my selfish request for seeing additional content, while possibly providing a preview of whats to come on YT. I enjoy watching you build the most so whatever formats you decide to tinker with I am interested in seeing.

I've been considering getting on Instagram. I think you may be the tipping point. I'll work on it. Thanks for the suggestion. And I'm always happy to put up good comments in the view comment section. :)

Hi Mike, I'd like to make a suggestion if I may... after you have finished showing us all the piece(s) you are working on sometimes it's hard to see exactly what you have achieved so I was thinking a couple of photographs after you have finished would help us see more clearly. Keep up the good work 👍

That's a good point. :) I was planning on showing photos in the next (final) part of this series, but some along the way would be nice as well. :) Will do. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just a tip. A) after priming your mini, apply a coat of Citadel Chainmail (What's nowaday's equivalence? Oldie me.) B) here and there, get some highlights with Brazen Brass. Next and last of this part, another lighter highlight with some golden tone. Not too clear, anyway. C) cover with satin varnish. Let it dry completely. D) apply a coat of Vallejo Chipping Medium. Wait for it to dry about one hour. E) airbrush the mini with Vallejo Verdigris Glaze. Wait one or two minutes. F) using a flat narrow wet brush, retire as much Verdigris as desired. This will make the surface appear as if it was stained. It takes not a big deal to get great results. How about giving it a try?

I didn’t find the video or audio to be jumpy, I felt it was fairly smooth. As a matter of fact, any smoother and I’d be intimidated - I’m a below average painter and need advice from someone that speaks human instead of just professional jargon. Additionally, if there was just sped up video with no voice, I’d probably not watch at all because I need the constant updates about paint thicknesses and what you’re trying to get the brush to do in order for it to help me at all. Thanks for the video.

Have you tried using a very aggressive dry brushing? I haven't watched the wrap-up to this series yet, but it seems like an aggressive dry brushing would still get into some of the recesses but still leave some of them bare. I know it's harder to be as detailed that way, but if you were painting a whole army, then it would certainly speed the process along. Looking good so far, though!

At the end of the verdigris experiments, maybe in a view comment section, I talk about drybrushing as a method for armywide painting. And, I wasn't totally happy with my results so there is some room to explore more for sure.

I agree with the comment about editing too heavily. Don't be afraid to leave it feeling more natural. I find that it actually feels more professional and polished when it's not as cut up. Of course I completely understand wanting to keep the video to a certain length of time. But my view would be don't worry as much about "umms" and and pauses. I think we all accept that to be a normal part of being human :P I also appreciate the bell sound as I paint while having your videos on in the background, so when I hear the bell I know to look up for an important bit of information. My one suggestion would be to use it sparingly. Looking up every few minutes for important information is great, but reading an annotation apologising for your chewing is unneeded. Again you're a human (I believe?!), therefore you will make noises and mistakes. Accept the noises. And this is coming from a person who HATES the sound of chewing. I think the bell is a great addition, I just wonder if it's a less is more situation.

Seems verdigris wants to express itself on larger areas. Much larger. THen you could consider adding something to grain it up a bit if the surface is too smooth. Crafts people using something from DYI paints that is some kind of sand powder. Adds texture to the paint. Scale has to be right, of course. I think you gotta try verdigris on way bigger stuff. Like some of the surface on the 31 inch Masterpiece Models resin Nautilus. That contrasting with rust effects, and keep it darker in spots will help not only with realism, but with character.

I actually think the GW effect looks pretty good. Obviously that's not always how copper looks, but it does sometimes seem to tarnish more heavily in the recesses.

@Terranscapes
@Terranscapes 6 жыл бұрын
I've tried them and they can produce nice effects but it is hard to get a consistent look. Plus, you can't clear coat them as it really knocks down the effect a lot.
@johnstevens6063
@johnstevens6063 6 жыл бұрын
Actually you can clear coat them and keep the effect if you airbrush the clear coat as opposed to using a rattle can one :)

Why don’t you paint them the verdigris colour first and then apply a wash over that to achieve what you want with the shadows?

I know there is a super easy way to accomplish what youre looking to do. I know it works great on larger models and I see no difference on it being used on small figures. Look up Hairspay Technique (Michael Rinaldi) You would easily get those micro in scale chipping effect you're looking for. Of course you would have to spray it with an airbrush and you would have to find the right "airbrushable" colored paint. Mission Models MMP-100 Russian Cockpit is close. I use this technique on my tanks and aircraft. it's AMAZING.

Thanks for taking the time to respond! Mooncabbage (one word) is in this case, a man. I would honestly rather a radio show than a silent at the bench, I really hate videos without talking or a voice over. I was thinking of something slightly more advanced than a Duncan paint by numbers, perhaps more in line with a Dr Faust painting tutorial/paint along. I really enjoy Dr Faust's stuff, and have done a few Reaper Bones Giants following along. Really the point was to have something searchable to help people find the channel. Money makes the world go round, afterall, and viewers = money. I am personally far too poor for a class, but you only need a few for that to work. I'm interested to see if your Innsmouth diorama series is a follow-along-able thing, not necessarily for cloning, but close enough you could make your own version following the same process (like a Bob Ross!).
@Terranscapes
@Terranscapes 6 жыл бұрын
I figured that about voice over/no voice over. I know I would want the chatting. :) Felt like I should put it out there just to see if there was a clamoring. I'm doing some hard thinking about classes. Real hard thinking. For the Innsmouth project, one of my goals will be to have more Join Me At the Bench segments where I can explain more about what I am doing. Sort of tutorial-lite installments along the way. I think (hope) that will be popular. Now I gotta sit down an work on the damn project... This verdigris stuff really derailed me. :)

Though I didn’t see how the Vallejo Game Paint came out. Did I miss it somehow? I am using Vallejo Game Paints, inks, heavy opaques and effects primarily so I was interested in seeing what you thought about their colors for this technique.

Have you considered that there might not be one right way of doing verdigris. It might be a combination of techniques. One for flat areas (capes) , one for lightly textured areas (armour) and one for heavily textured areas (faces/hair).
@Terranscapes
@Terranscapes 6 жыл бұрын
I hope I mentioned there isn't a right or wrong way. Can't remember... :( I have seen some statues that have varying shades from one area to another. Even on smaller pieces like shields. So I agree, varying the technique for areas is totally viable. :)

6:30 and around - if you want to showcase colour differences better, provide a uniform, plain white (or black) background to the models. Overall, for showcasing you'd have to take a hint from AvE and tell the lens to "fhokoos, you fhack!". I have recently bought Vallejo's verdigris and at first was surprised it's not a wash... now I understand better why. The "problem" with realistic verdigris is that what it looks like absolutely depends on what and where the item is. Is it a statue? Well, has it been bronze from the get-go? Has it been treated to achieve 'fake' verdigris before it's been exposed to weather? Has it just been cast, and then exposed to weather? Is the overall humidity high? etc... In some places it looks like verdigris is streaking, completely opaque. Other times it's chipped, or looks like brushed, and is semi-opaque. GW surely were wrong in their use of verdigris, but there seems to be many ways to get verdigris right, and it changes with scale.

It is the frequency of use, not really the frequency of the sine wave, if that makes sense? Maybe a tone with less attack would be less... annoying. but thats just me! if they make you happy, keep using them.

Almost all my paints are Vallejo, and pretty happy about that. But Vallejo Verdigris is the worst paint I have ever painted. It has a gelatine texture and there's no way to thin it properly. It never paints the way I like it to paint
