We were spending the weekend in the Lake District and I looked around for a parkrun that caught my eye. Morecambe Prom parkrun jumped out at me immediately. I love coastal runs so an out-and-back on the Promenade really appealed and when I looked at the run route then WOW!
The 5 km route passes so many points of interest including the famous statue of Eric Morecambe OBE. It also passes the Time and Tide Bell, the grade II* listed Midland Hotel, the site for The Eden Project North, not to mention the sculpture of the Lake District peaks on the horizon, three awesome playgrounds and countless incredible bird sculptures amongst other sculptures and landmarks.
The volunteers were incredible in these testing conditions, especially young Audra who blew me away with her energy, knowledge and enthusiasm. Poppy did ridiculously well too as it was hard to run with what felt like rain piercing your skin! The back of the out-and-back was some of the most challenging running I've ever done!
We then headed to the Lakes for a weekend of running in the mountains although the weather didn't improve much! I'll bring you a video of that soon!
Happy running,
Nicola :)

Thanks Sally, you're right, she's a pretty tough outdoors child. She went to Steiner until she turned 5 so was outside whatever the weather and they taught skills about how to keep warm in frozen weather rather than just teaching to get indoors so being outside in bad weather has been normalised for Poppy. I think it's given her a good foundation and also... Being dragged to parkrun every weekend whatever the weather since birth 🤣 she's an outdoors child for sure but I still feel very very lucky that she enjoys running with me and that together we can make it a fun adventure, when in reality it could VERY easily be hideous due to the atrocious weather! I'm a lucky Mummy as Poppy is a pleasure to be with and a great companion. That's why I let her sit in the car after a mile when we ran in Storm Arwen. I totally trust her judgement about what she should and shouldn't be doing and that day it was genuinely too cold for Poppy. Luckily this week was windy, the rain hurt and it was cold but not to the bone like it was at Roundhay and Poppy coped fine and enjoyed it. Anyway... I'm waffling! TLDR 🤣 Thanks for your lovely comment 🤗

@@NicolaRuns you sound like an amazing mum and I'm sure she'll be an amazing young lady when she grows up. @@matthewcullen1298 thank you for these lovely words Matthew 🤗 it's one of the reasons I think parkrun is so brilliant for children. It definitely helps build resilience 💪 I'm just so lucky that Poppy is such a great adventure buddy. She always has been, even at 4 when we came to your neck of the woods to parkrun! We did Cairns parkrun in the summer! So she's run in all weathers! Super cold to super hot! 🙃

@@NicolaRuns holy Dooly. Cairns in summer run. Yeah she is a little trooper. I'm from Queensland but just in the south east. I've worked about 2 hours west of Mackay concreting in summer and you drip in sweat all day . The heat is oppressive.and that's coming from an Australian. She's an impressive young lady but you obviously make it enjoyable for her and that's the sign of a good mum . It sounds like she will adapt to most situations and be able to overcome most hurdles. They are valuable life skills. Too many think that everything has to be perfect before they can do anything these days . Simply not a realistic approach

It's similar to Whitley Bay parkrun where my parents live, minus the bird sculptures, and Whitley Bay has a better beach for sandcastles, plus a lighthouse on an island with seals (though the parkrun doesn't go near there). My dad used to go to Morecambe for holidays as a child, seeing this makes me realise why he decided to settle in Whitley Bay as they are so similar. Poppy is amazing, so impressed that she kept going. I think parkrunning in all weathers is so good for their resilience.

I think you're so right Ruth! Poppy's emotional resilience could sometimes take some work as she can be easily hurt but oh my goodness her physical resilience and determination are amazing. I'm so lucky because we can still have fun when we're out in challenging conditions. It's one of the many reasons parkrun is so good for kids... As you well know 🤗 I've never been to Whitley Bay but after reading your comment I really want to go! 😃

Cheers Nic. Another epic adventure. Character building in all that wind & rain. 😆🤣 Brings back memories of 2016 Great North West Half Marathon in Blackpool where we were battered with wind & rain for 13.1 miles. Bad weather adds to the fun, I guess. Pleased you found time to visit Eric. He must be the most photographed man in Morecambe. This would be an awesome one to do in the summer. You must return when the sun is shining & do a follow up video. Ps. Done a few races in that area with Lancaster runners. Fun, friendly events. I would highly recommend if you get the chance.

Never been to Morecombe but it ďoes look lovely from your vlog. One to put on the "to do" list if I am up in the North ever again. Something special about running next to water....even on a windy day like last Saturday. Was training Tuesday night and it took us right next to the rail station, I waved at commuters standing on the platform, they didn't wave back miserable sods. 😁
