OMG all the memories, we used to never miss Morecambe and Wise show especially with Tom Jones . All we have now is reality TV which is absolutely abominable. The younger generation don’t realise what good comedy we had back then , absolutely bloody marvellous compared with today .

Morcambe and Wise were a perfectly matched pair. In a sense.the foil and the epee. Ernie.the more conservative, usually the recipient of Eric's kindly jibes, and the more serious player when the part called for it, was masterful in that role. Eric, more of the clown, was more spontaneous and insightful to the developing scene. Always looking for an opportunity to quickly exploit, he was just brilliant. Together they were pure gold!

So funny when they started dancing behind him. Those were the days, the singer could sing, the comedians were funny and everyone felt a bit better about things. Although alternative comedy was my generations revolution and I loved it at the time, where we've ended up is not so good. You only have to watch these pro's to realise that.

Not true. It's just that variety shows like Morecambe and Wise went out of fashion. There's a lot of excellent comedy around today in the form of stand up and sitcoms, and it's easily arguable that sitcoms today are collectively a higher standard than they were back then. We remember the classics of the 70s and 80s but there was a lot of dross back then too that we never clips for on KZbin because they were so bad. We may never see the likes of double acts like Morecambe and Wise again, but comedy is alive and well, just different, that's all, just like variety shows were different from the music hall show where Eric and Ernie developed their act.

This clip is why they were brilliant. Their show may have been variable at times (especially on ITV), but this is an example of their comedy at its best- self-deprecation mixed with gentle ribbing of the guest, then physical comedy, all calculated to bring out the best in their guest and in their show.
