I bough mine a year ago and it works great. I had a few jams when it was being broke in, but no other issues since. I noticed you were only feeding (1) limb at a time and are timing how long it takes to chip it up, but I non-stop feed multiple branch's into it and it chips them up great. I have chipped the tops and branch's of over (50) Live & Water oaks. If feeding limbs above 4 inches you do have to keep putting pressure on it as it may not auto fed the bigger one's. Hope you find something that works for you, but I've had nothing but great experiences with mine..

I watched this video before I purchased this machine. Very detailed, well done. I hoped your experience was just bad luck as there were so many other positive reviews. I should have learned from your bad experience... Mine came in a similarly damaged crate. Looked like it was dropped from an airplane into my driveway. Same issues with paint missing from the chutes. The welding was terrible. The bracket for the latch that holds the outfeed chute was welded on too proud, so the latch wouldn't stay closed and would pop open as soon as the motor started running. Big safety issue obviously. Explained this to the company and they sent me new latches... after I told them that wasn't the problem. I had to take an angle grinder to my brand new machine to make the latch close properly. Once I started using the machine I was pleased with its chipping power, even though it is SUPER loud, even with hearing protection. On the 2nd day of use, the part on the exhaust that deflects the exhaust away from the outfeed chute rattled off. DK Power wouldn't field my complaint and referred me to Koehler... I continued to use the machine but now I have a large burn circle on the outfeed chute from the exhaust blowing directly on it. Now there seems to be a small piece of debris under the drum that is preventing it from spinning. That may or may not be the machine's fault but for a $3k machine, it seems like there is some issue with it every time I use it. I have to take it all apart and hopefully the problem is just a small chunk of wood under the drum. Big time buyer's remorse on this machine!

sorry you had to to go thru this, after my deep inspection there was no way that i had that many issues with my unit and that it wouldnt be passed down to others but unfortunately i've had a few reports of others having issues as well. I'm very nit-picky but man this was a real lemon and i'mo glad i was able to return it to home depot. i actually tried another chipper, made in the usa that had a $4k+ price tag and it had it's own issues, i'll actually be uploading the video on that soon. if you can , return the SOB and rent a vermeer bc1000 for a few hundred bucks and call it a day. :) thank you for this update, it validates my concerns for sure but sorry you had to experience it first hand.

Agree with your assessment that any retail chipper is going to struggle vs the commercial ones you can rent. I tried both - the retail one I had to put a lot of effort into. I ended up spending more time trimming branches for it to feed properly and not jam than I did actual chipping. Then I rent a commercial chipper. What a godsend. I threw branches in and it ate it right up. I would love to have a chipper onsite to use whenever I want but a reliable retail version at a reasonable price just doesn't seem possible.

Yeah the only thing I think I'd be happy with is something along the lines of a used Vermeer iron similar in good shape but that's going to set you back 10K and up.

I have the Jansen gts 2000 pro. It has been on the European market for years with having the strongest German certification on the market. The only problem I had with it was my fault I picked up a hand full of pine straw at the end of the job and didn't realize it had a 2" rock mixed in with it. But it at least ate the rock. The Jansen 1500e I'm learning is a better design and works better live and learn I guess hope this helps. 🇺🇸👍

I'm one month into owning one of these DK2 chipper/shredders and yes, I agree completely. I'm spending more time preparing the branches for the machine than I am actually using the machine. I've never owned one of these before and... I don't know what I was expecting. It's not the time saver I thought it would be, that's for sure. And, after 7 hours of use, the thing is broken. The metal wheel inside is rubbing against the metal housing and making a terrible racket.

So I just bought this chipper. Yes, I was skeptical but did my research. I had none of the problems you did. I think you had been sent a returned machine. First thing I did was check for proper belt alignment. It was dead on. Next I re-torqued all the nuts. They were good but I wasn't quite satisfied with the bed knife bolts so torqued them a bit more. The only thing missing from the kit was two lock nuts, I had some in the shop. The spindles are just a smudge too long for the wheel hubs. A couple shims will fix that. I put a quart of oil in it, some gas in the tank, I was chipping brush! It ran smooth and cut well. I bought this to fill a niche. I plan to remove the wheels and tongue and add an attachment plate to it. I'll move it around with a toro dingo. I've been around chippers for close to 35 years and I can tell you this, they aren't complicated machines.

@@morejelloplease , brought it back to home depot today. Fortunately I got my money back. It had a defective knife. I could have replaced it but with what? Probably another defective knife. I was afraid it might explode at full throttle and that couldn't be good. I spoke to the receptionist at DK2, she said a technician would contact me within 24 hours, that was at least 4 days ago. That told me a lot about the company right there. Back to the drawing board...

Hopefully buyers will do research like us and stumble across this video and comment section and save themselves some time money and frustration. I've had the OPC533 for about a month, I've put about 7 hours on the thing and it started making a hellacious metallic racket and stopped chipping well. Took it apart and found that the rotating wheel thing is rubbing on the metal housing, it looks like the whole thing became misaligned. My guess is that this rubbing is slowing the wheel down, leading to the poor chipping quality. I was wearing ear protection so I didn't notice the increased noise at first. I'm going to call the dealer that I bought it from and see what my options are. I may ask for my money back.

Sorry about your bad machine. Mine works well on the farm. But ... It required of me to get to know it and really understand the setup and tweak it for performance. Also had to correct typical manufacturing defects.

I wish I have found this video before purchasing. I got the same model. We had no problems with assembly, and no misterios noises in the drum. It chips pretty good up to 3” of soft green material. But- on the 3rd hour of operation the lower belt pulley broke, apparently it’s cast iron, not steel. And of poor alloy. The vendor sent us a replacement part free of charge, but assembling it was a nightmare, it was too tight, we had to ship it to fit, we got new belts (exact same as the original) wouldn’t fit, we are now getting bigger ones. I suspect it broke because the original belts were too short and applied too much pressure on the pulley (even with poor alloy it should’ve held otherwise, it provides circular friction, not hammering power) I hope our specimen would work better once we get the right belts on it.. 😢

You definitely got a bad or returned unit. I just bought one yesterday and so far so good. But the main reason I am commenting is about your dissatisfaction with how long it take to chip a twig. I have used a few professional grade chippers in the past (rentals - but ones that retail for $20K+). For a gravity feed, I am not sure you are ever going to get the experience you are looking for like the professional ones with hydraulic feeders. All those ones you showed in the beginning, I would have taken all of them at once, or as many as I could, and shoved them all in, and if they get jammed or don't slide down, then grab a bigger one and show that down. I learned to save the "good" branches as chute cleaners. By good I mean at least 2" diameter, not shaped like an "S", and a bit fanned out at the end. Mine worked similar to yours, I just didn't stand there waiting for it to chip the twig and threw more at it.

The Power King looks solid but since it was stated on here that they were related to DK2 I have doubts about that one as well. I am open to recommendations from anyone. Don't need to spend more than $1500 and would like to keep it closer to 1k.

I have to admit. That was painful. Really painful. I wonder if it was a previously used product or just a bad copy. The manufacturer needs to step in with a comment and explain why this happened. I was so happy when it showed up, but as i put it together things kept going wrong. i think the oil was break in oil from the engine manufacturer. i believe this was a new product but it was just designed and fabricated very poorly. some people had better luck but this one really hurt, if the manufacturer wants to send me the next step up i'll sure give it a shot! but it's bad when it wont chip anything larger than a 1" branch, hell i can break those over my leg :)

Wish I had seen this before we bought ours. Got about 180 hours of work in it before the rotor jumped loose and jammed the cutting knife into the steel rotor. Part is on back order and has been for 2 months. They wont even give me a ETA. Save your money.

That's how it usually starts out. Then after several hours hardware starts falling off, etc. You have to really go over the unit and check every nut and bolt. Hope yours stays together.

Very true. It used to be that "import resellers" with integrity and money would find a good factory, send a rep over and work out the details of quality control in person to eliminate, "lost in translation" and dubious quality control practices. Basically it costs money, time, and a good business rapport to develop a product with good QC. There is a much better market in Europe due to the demand for these small machines. Much better quality at a much higher price though. They have great machines that we can't even get here in the US. Now if I could only buy a small chipper on tracks from Alibaba instead of $10k for the same thing here in the states.

The only thing I don’t like is the chipper blades get dull fast . That’s probably because like you I was trying to chip dry wood . On a fresh cut tree it works really good .

Second time us my OPC 506 yesterday. I noticed a bolt, lock washer and a large washer lying beneath the unit as I was working. After pulling off the pulley cover, I realized the bolt and washer were from the top pulley. The bolt was stripped, the only thing holding the pulley on was the belt cover. Just sent in pictures for warranty. I shall see what DK2 has to say. This is ridiculous.

I have owned the same model for 3 seasons and it has chipped a lot of braches on my 65 acre wooded property.. Lots of green, dried, hard and soft woods. I do have a bad latch though. My blades have stayed pretty sharp- still on the first edges. The tongue and stand were poorly thought out and I wouldnt buy it again.

Forgive me but i have the power king copy same engine same chassis…i use it to run a two man tree service mine works perfectly well even after two years, one thing that did happen to me is a week ago i think my drum split i wish you could share more info on how you removed the belt pulleys to access the drum im currently stuck on that part,,, try power king though

I don't remember honestly without looking at my video, I could remember though that it was hard to take that cover off with stripped nuts and bolts. The Power King is made by the same company, you got a good machine, I got a lemon.

Removed bolts from cutter blades using an impact wrench with 160 lbs. of force which was necessary to even begin to loosen the bolts. Inspected each bolt and notice the threads had flattened due to the application of too torque when installed plus the threads were left completely covered with loctite residue. One of the bolt heads was damaged as it was frozen and would not turn at all. Used chemical release agents and a map torch and nothing helped. Cut the blade with a diamond cutter then pried it up breaking the blade for removal hoping it would help release the bond, again no success. Used a 3-foot breaker bar and broke off the head of the bolt, which required me to flatten the top and drill out the bolt and then tapped the hole to be able to just replace the bolt. Installed the first blade and rotated the drum to find it was impacting on a metal guard on the side. Then I removed the drive belts and pulley to find the set screws on the rotating shaft had been over torqued and stripped allowing the shaft to float sideways. Great video, I laugh every time I watch it, which is the only thing funny about this piece of crap machine. Be prepared to spend many hours when you replace the blades, oh and I bought 3 sets of spares as the first pieces had many large breaks after only 8 hours of using them on my limbs. Removing the drum, the mounting bolts are misaligned and require a pry bar to remove the assembly and god help you when trying to replace the parts. I removed the drum shaft bracket so I could decide what modifications were necessary before it could be replaced. Several of the bolts were bent using a hammer hitting the nuts partial rotated so as not to damage the threads and even that required me to use a round file to open several of the holes. So now, I could now beat the mounting assembly back onto main unit, wow what a pain in the arse.

@@morejelloplease Ordered a box of metric set screws to complete the assembly before I can test the chipper, as I needed 4 of them to complete the job. The blades were torqued to 45 ft. lbs. using the generic settings as no information is provided by the manufacturer. The one good thing about my blade order which was done through DK as they were the only source available at the time, was that they sent 2 sets blades with screws for the $150, probably a mistake on their part. It will be interesting to see how the new blades hold up after using the proper torque assembly settings. When ordering the parts through DK you will find that they are not available on the website listing, so you will have to call customer support and request they add them to the site and they will add 10 pieces and then you must keep refreshing until you can add them to your order, that is the only way that I could purchase them. They do not sell the 4 set screws for the shaft, so I purchased a box of them from ebay, as not available from Harbor Freight in the metric sizes and I did not want to have to re-tap the holes which were in good condition. I had previously ordered blades from another secondary source which were not in stock at the time which is how I ended up with the third set, having spares is never a bad thing in my playbook.

I know absolutely nothing about that make of wood chippers, but it looks like the blades must be turned 180 degrees so that the slanted part of the blade faces the drum. A chipper with blades is most useful on fresh branches and not some that have been lying around and dried up.

The blade is mounted wrong; the bevel on the blade should be turned toward the drum. All chippers work like a guillotine. The sharp edge of the blade passes by the anvil, thus doing the cutting. This is why the chipper would not chip.

this is how it came from the factory, it wouldnt go in any other way, the anvil could not be reversed. a drum chipper is different from a disc. this thins was so crappy i had to make a video or else no one would believe me :)

You sure did have a lot of issues with your chipper. I also had issue with missed aligned parts, and the tons of corrosion. I will be making a update to my review this weekend before I take my machine back. I really haven't chip too much and already the blades are becoming dull. Also the discharge shoot keeps coming lose.

Hey thanks for the video. After seeing the other vid you referred to, I was considering buying one. Not now. By chance, did you buy it from Lowes ? They show ones with a black bottom like yours on their site. Tractor Supply shows the orange ones. I worked in the building supply business for 9 years (not a big box store). I found that manufacturers make products to the buyers specs. Example: we would see Stanley doors from Home Depot vs our Stanley doors. The jambs were thinner, and so was the steel on the Home Depot Stanley. Maybe DK made a cheaper version for big box stores ? Who knows. Sorry for your bad luck !

this one came from home depot. i noticed last years model had an orange drum casing. i think different vendors get a mixed bag of paint jobs, just depends what leaves the manufacturer in china. this also reminds me of when i was building my house, i was told that the delta faucets were plastic vs brass for the contractor ones at the plumbing store. i called delta and they said we make the best faucet we can, some models are brass, some use plastic, just depends on which one you get, but we don't make a cheaper box store version. when i told the plumber what delta said, then he suddenly matched home depots price. some vendors say "we can't compete with big box stores, they buy more faucets and get a bigger discount" well, on the opposite side of the coin business is business, i'm buying 15 faucets, and i expect the price to be right. if the faucets are the same then it makes sense for me to buy them from depot at $171 each compared to $230/ea. at the plumbing store. sometimes shops are just too far apart and don't want to play ball, i'm not asking for something for nothing, but when cost is $120 each, there is still meat on the bone at $171. multiply that times 15 and you see where i'm going. sometimes i've had to tell them thanks but no thanks and move on, some guys got butt hurt and started name calling in emails, that was a window store here in austin, i had to block their emails. that's just bad business practices. their yelp reviews were horrible, wonder why. I like home building , home inspections, diagnostics, etc. on those weekends when i need to mow the lawn or chip some wood i expect my brand new machine to do what it's supposed to, not break in 5 places leaving me with my fingers crossed hoping i can get replacement parts under warranty, too much fuss and bother. imagine if car manufactures worked like that? oh wait, there's one that does. Honda. lol i owned 9 of them, never again.

@@morejelloplease We measured the jambs on the doors. There was a difference. Cheaper quality. IDK about Delta. I can tell you, Price Pfister had different ones. I broke a part on one years ago while installing it. Went to every plumbing supply to get a replacement. Nothing. Had to return it and go with another brand.

I purchased this same model from Lowe’s. Much different experience. I’ve cleared about 30 3”-5” trees and done a lot of canopy lifting- and it’s worked like a tank! Dry wood does chip harder and kickback, but fresh cut trees that are 5” pull right in and chip. Sorry you got a lemon. :(

Home Depot had them on sale $1999 if i recall correctly. they were just the vendor that did the transaction. the unit came straight from DK2 Power on a pallet via ABF or Estes freight, can't remember which one now. These are made in china, in fact the manufacturer makes slightly different variants but paints them different colors for different US buyers. they range from $600-800 and shipping is determined on the amount of pieces they buy. There's no quality control, something is bound to break on these units sooner or later, and if you're outside the return period then you're screwed. I bought it thru home depot because I could return it easily if there was any issues. I contacted the owner of DK2, same owner as power king and he told me to return it and buy another one. After all the issues I saw with mine there was no way in hell i'd buy another one. If they want to send me a 566e i'll try it in exchange for a simple and honest review, and if it works, then great, the video doesn't lie. but so far i havent heard a peep. Not a big deal, I found a manufacturer that stepped up to the plate and i'm going to test their machine in a week. I almost bought a Salsco but they tried to sell me a 6 year old used machine with no warranty representing it as new. Fool me once....

@@BuckRogers2000 the key issues with mine were the bed knives didn't line up correctly and were not adjustable despite what they say. The drum bearing allen screws were loose. The blade knife bolts disappeared, the belt wore prematurely, overall fit and finish was pretty poor. I assembled it correctly, you basically attach the hopper and exhaust chute and add the wheels, then its ready. All of the issues were from someone else's hands, not mine. It looked good on paper but realistically you're not going to feed it a 6" log unless you want to babysit it for 5 minutes, and that's IF it doesn't stall the engine. Some people are embarrassed to say they are having issues because of what they paid. All I'm trying to do is present a real world end user experience and educate the next guy that's looking at buying one of these so they know what they are getting into.

@Meiere Christi probably! I know those chippers they use to make mulch. Are massive! There like 2 stories high! They put whole big trees through them! Anyway I used to work for a Landscaper down in South Florida. I was a forman. So one day my boss told me to run out west where they make the mulch to get 10 pallet of mulch. I'd been there many times before. And seen the big mulcher in action! It gobbled up whole trees no problem! And sprays red dye out the end on to the chips. Anyway I get to the front gate and it's closed. Which it's always open. This is a Tuesday I think. So I call them. There company name is Earthwise mulch. So they answer and I tell them I need 10 pallets of mulch and I'm at the gate. They told me there closed for the day that the guy that runs the big mulcher fell in! A log was jammed. And he didn't follow protocol and shut the machine off and get help. Instead because he had worked there for yrs. He tried to break loose the jammed log! Well he succeeded! And he slipped and went with the log! Crazy! I could only Imagine his last thoughts! But it was over quickly atleast. 😟😔

I have found with most pinch feed chippers, they will take branches as fast as you can feed them if they are straight and green, not ash,oak,or black locust, and nothing forked or twisted at all. My DR will take huge pine when it's fresh and green as long as it doesn't have any snags. This DK Power design doesn't leave you much to work with...alignment and so on.

@Meiere Christi i can burn as long as the neighbors dont complain. we all burn often so it's not an issue. i have multiple piles and could use a good chipper. lots of trees and branches that breakand fall due to weather, etc.

Hell no, the company said bring it back and other another one, maybe it will be better. One of those dreamt in USA, made in China deals that's not his fault or problem. I returned it and bought a $5k made in usa one and even that failed on me in 30 minutes. I had videos posted but the company worked with me to fix it. I ended up selling that because in my opinion a $5k machine should be efficient and it wasn't, kinda like my $5k scag zero turn, 3 brand new - all have issues, no dealer or manufacturer support, warranty doesn't mean a thing.

I am glad I watched the video as I was considering a purchase. Very good detailed review, thanks. I am guessing this was manufactured in the big C. I have encountered similar problems with Ch#a products, such as poor welds, misaligned holes, stripped threads, poor machining, poor quality quality alloys, and flaky paint. I am tired of re-drilling holes, breaking bolts and screw heads simply by tightening by hand.

I thought all the reviews made it look painfully slow. I have an old DR chipper that would eat it's dinner and I only have $400 into it. Old 18hp Briggs opposed twin powers it right through.

I bought a mackissic commercial (they make DR) and it failed on me several times. They worked with me on repairs but it just wasn't up to my standard. I've yet to find a decent chipper.

Dead, bone dry wood is not ideal for chippers, also that "not straight" branches. It will not want to feed.

i had a $5k chipper recently and it was a royal pain in the ass, i dont recommend anything so far, nothing has my seal of approval lol. you may have better luck than me, i'm pretty fussy. whatever you decide on just make sure you can return it. if it doesnt do what they say it will do or what the videos show it doing then you should be able to return it, the only good thing about ordering one thru a box store, you have that piece of mind.

I've used the jansen gts 1500 for over a year now doing professional tree work . I cut wood up instead of chipping no bigger than my arm and it has always worked great . It never let me down and I've used bigger chipper before with my old tree company and 100% know how to chip and what machines can do and for its size you can't beat it . I get it in back yards and next to places a big chipper never could go . When the blades get worn it doesn't work as well but it took a year before I had to flip the blades and adjust the gap

@@morejelloplease I am curious what kind that was. I have found small home store type machines are all pretty weak even if you're good at tweaking them in to maximum performance. Stamped steel can only take so much without flexing. But more heavy machines with thicker, welded steel, and adjustable bed/anvil plate (also sharpenable) of some sort, makes a machine you can work with. My little old DR isn't the boss, but it does very well for the money. I can sharpen the knives and bed plate, and adjust the bed plate closer to the knives and get it cutting fast and chipping small chips. I would prefer about another 1/8" of thickness to the chipper housing, at least another 1/4" thickness on the flywheel (it is 3/4" thick now), but really, that would be better at 1 1/4" thick, and I would more fan blades to blow out the chips, and a chute that made it east to load into a truck or trailer. Of course then it would need 30hp. My old tractor is about 35hp on the pto, it would be perfect but not for going anywhere and doing tree work off the farm. Sorry you went through such a mess for a chipper.

@@TacoBoyManThing strange i saw your reply but not matthews. compact yellow one? i bought a merry commercial made by mackissic and it broke after 30 mins, it wouldnt even chip a 1/2 branch. they worked with me , sent me parts to try but it never worked right. I finally got it where it would chip a 2" limb but it had to be perfectly straight and freshly cut. that chipper was supposed to be the answer to te he power king . DK2 power junk but it turned out to be a failure also. i sold it about a week later. as much as i'd like to have my own chipper, it's best to rent a vermeer 1000 for a few hundred bucks. that thing will eat a bicycle.

This is a cheap Chinese knock-off of a Woodmaxx DC-1260, which I have owned for the past 4 years. It is definitely superior to this unit.

Sorry to burst your bubble but there are only a handful of companies in China manufacturing these, every year is they change them up just enough to confuse the end-user. Most of the USA designed chipper such as your WoodMax is actually made in China. Some are made better than others but I wouldn't bet on it. I did get my hands on a US-made MacKissic who also makes chippers for the DR brand and had trouble with there's also . If I need any chipping done I'm just going to rent a Vermeer for a couple hundred bucks , being able to feed 10 inch logs is rather enjoying to watch on a large machine that I don't have to pay for, store, or maintain. You need to go buy any other one at that price range and see what you get.. I ran a 12 inch power feed wood chip that did not want to take a 2 inch branch because it was bent all stupid.. You are like the worst person to demo a machine. Good luck finding something you wont grumble about.. I have bought stuff made in the US that was made on a Monday and all the workers must have come in still drunk.. Go buy a DR Woodchipper and see how you like that lol..

He may have been exaggerating on the chipping speed for a model that doesn't have auto feed and might get better results loading more wood behind the first, but the blade and anvil alignment are terrible on that machine. I thought the anvil would be more of a right angle to the cutter knives (like in a disk type chipper). Dry cedar is still a soft wood, and should chip up easy. I think your comment might have been a little harsh, but you are entitled to your opinions.
