Native Utrechter here: great to hear you had such a wonderful time in our lovely city! And you seem like the perfect, friendly and considerate tourist. If you should return to Utrecht, I've got some tips :): - The tower that you mentioned, the medieval Dom, really is a must see. Because of an old law no building in the city is allowed to be higher than the Dom. - Rent a kayak at the Oudegracht to cruise the canals and discover the city. I would recommend either taking the Biltse Grift/Zilveren schaats route (see parts of the city that you can't see by bike or foot) or go sailing to Amelisweerd. The last route takes you out of the city more into nature (do bring some picknick stuff with you). - If the weather allows, go nature swimming at veilinghaven or the Munt quay (for free) in the city. - For more off the beaten tracks go for drinks and often life music (in the evening/night) at the Nijverheid (on an old industrial site). Close by is the Nar, which is my favorite place to go out, they have a nice outside also, the vibe is relaxed and they often have great DJs. Sometimes also on a saturday/sunday during the day. The Ekko is also fun (which is a bit closer to city centre). For more 'traditional'' life music you can go to the oude pothuys. Best and very cosy/atmospheric cocktailbar is Behind Bars; very small and great place to chat with people. Fun buildings to go in for a drink or a look: Olivier bar, set up in a hidden Catholic church (when Catholic churches were officially not allowed but tolerated) and restaurant/bar/hostel Bunk, set up also in an old church. - Food: Because of our (regrettable) history the Netherlands has great Indonesian or Indo-Dutch food and Surinamese food. In Utrecht I would recommend Blauw (Get a Rijsttafel, it a typical Dutch-Indo dish) or the more wallet-friendly Indonesia Asli. For the best Surinamese (vegetarian) roti, go to Moksi & Tandoori. De Klub is also a great restaurant with seasonal more European/Dutch dishes. For a quick and more budget friendly bite go to Spagetteria (Italian pasta) or Kimmade (vietnamese). - Go browsing in old antique and curiosity shops on the Oudegracht. My favorite is de Oude Pijplade. Even if you don't buy anything, super fun to walk around their vault cellar. - There are a lot of hidden small parks and playgrounds in the city that are very fun to walk around in (google it and you'll find the map). In the middle of the city there is also the very lovely and quiet 18th century botanical garden (Oude Hortus), you can enter for € 5,-. Hopefully you'll come back to our great city. Have fun on the rest of your European trip!

Hi guy, enjoying your tripvlog! I'm Dutch, and living in Leiden. If you draw a triangle from Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden is the 3d city. Leiden is old as well, and in 1574 we were sieged by Spain in the 80 jarige oorlog. The liberation is still celebrated every year at the 3d of October. One of the traditions is td FREE distribution of raw herring and a round white bread. Every citizen, or ex citizen is welcome. According to myth, this was tthe first food that reached the city after driving away the Spaniards. Other fun fact about the beach: every new years morning thousands of people run for a dip in the sea or lakes: it's called the New Years Dip (Nieuwjaarsduik). Thanks for your vids, really fun and interesting to hear from a foreign guy about his impressions of our country. Greetings!

Hi, I love to see you walk all my favorite spots! The cathedral at 9.00 in your walking tour used to be conected to the big tower next to it. The Dom Tower. One of the very rare tornado's in the Netherlands distroyed a part of the church in 1674, They never rebuild it. I am glad you enoyed Utrecht so much! Hope you have a realy good time in Germany too.
@arjenlaan41033 ай бұрын
Geeky addition for readers who can't get enough of history with years and dates and all 🙂 Not only did they not rebuild that part of the church, they did not even fully clear out the rubble until 1850. The main reasons for that were that the people were traumatized and both the city and the church were broke. The reason for that happened two years earlier: 1672, "The Year of Disaster", the only year in Dutch history that received a nickname. The Netherlands were simultaneously invaded by Hamburg and by Louis "The Sun King" XIV, and attacked by England. Holland remained save behind a line of fortresses and inundated lands, but Utrecht is not Holland. Also, Utrecht was stupid and thought it would not need protective water works (and that water works would benefit the competing city of Amersfoort, and how horrible would that have been, right) Aaaanyway. So, while Holland was safe, Utrecht was attacked by the French, and quickly surrendered to avoid too much plunder and massacre. The plundering still happened, and within a week the rich city of Utrecht became destitute. The then protestant (and wealthy) Dom church was re-consecrated as catholic (and now dirt poor) church. Some catholic couples in Utrecht took the opportunity to get married in the Dom church. Amsterdam noted this, and did not forget or forgive, in the eyes of Holland, Utrecht was now a city of cowards and traitors... and papists! Eventually, the Dutch army, under Prince William III (the one of the Glorious Revolution of 1688) drove away the French. But when the French left Utrecht, they took all the money and all the valuables with them. And nobody was willing to help Utrecht rebuild. And then, two years later, after a sweltering hot last day of July, the storm came. Storms, like years, did not get names, back then. This one did though: "’t Schrickelik Tempeest" ("The Terrible Tempest"). It ravaged the land from Brugues to past Amersfoort, but Utrecht was hit like no other, many houses, and every single windmill was destroyed, as were several churches, and as was part of the (now re-re-consecrated as a Protestant) Dom Church. This, people, both in Utrecht and outside it, believed, could not have been a coincidence... And like in 1672, no help from Amsterdam or anywhere else would come for Utrecht. And why would it, this was clearly an act of God! Especially since while the middle of the church was just about pulverized, the tower and the choir remained completely untouched. So, with no money and the people devastated, the ruins remained ruins. But the story does not end there, oh no. Because: few people would visit those ruins... but many who did were men, from all ranks and walks of life, seeking intimate relations with other men, among the nooks and crannies that the rubble offered. This was not widely known outside the 17th/18th century "gay scene", but the sacristan of the church did know. And this became a big problem in 1730 when the then sacristan, who lived in the Dom Tower, was held to account for being a corrupt, drunk piece of work. He escaped prosecution by spilling the beans about the depravity that regularly took place at his doorstep. The scandal shook the whole country. The least of the result of it that locals in Utrecht to this day call themselves "Utrechter" and not, as the demonym was until 1730, "Utrechtenaar", which even centuries after was only ever used as a pejorative. The more serious result was that hundreds of gay men were persecuted, and 80 were murdered. Bigotry, too, was probably all the incentive that the people needed to actually start doing something about the ruins. And in the end, that did bring a little bit of good, too, because the ground under the Dom Square has a LOT of history: there are remains of an older church, and beneath that, the remains of a major Roman fortress from when Utrecht was still called "Ultra Trajectum". archeologists have done a lot of digging there, and the last time they did, they kept the dig site open for people to visit, it's basically an in-situ museum that you can roam around in holding a flashlight (that has a laser pointer that activates displays, it's kind of neat). With 2000 years of history, there is a lot of stuff there!

Those cathedrals both in the Netherlands and also in Belgium are huge and they stand out more because the terrain is so flat. For someone that has been living in Utrecht for quite some time, it's fun to see you walk around and hear your experiences! 2:51 I was really surprised you hadn't experienced this before. It's very common in The Netherlands to pay after you're done eating or drinking; inside, but also when you sit in the outside area of a place. It feels very hospitable, since you can stay as long as you like, order more, and just pick up the bill at the end. Maybe if they had bad experiences at some point they change it, but it rarely happens to me that I'd have to pay immediately. I usually only ask for that when I'm in a hurry, so that I can get up and go anytime without having to worry about the bill. 7:07 In Utrecht on their days off when it's warm, a lot of people tend to go to the parks near the water and bring some food and drinks. Then after the sun sets or around dinner time they go for a bite to eat and maybe the cafe later. But even then on warm days, a lot prefer to sit in outside areas of restaurants and bars and enjoy that. We don't have good weather all the time, so we grab the chance when it's there!

As a Belgian who mass produce frikandel (we allso call them curryworst). I may tell you: we all love them and they only got more popular as a filling of the "WorsteBroodje" : a bread-sausage. You don't want to know what it's made from. Most of us know & we still opt to forget cause it's so good ;)

Great to see you walking through Utrecht which is my "local " city when I visit my Dutch friends who live just a few miles away. Glad you saw the Dom Tower. Love your Dutch pronunciations always good to have a go at it ! Looking forward to more of your videos Joel !

Did you miss the fact that half the Cathedral, the Nave, fell down in a storm in 1674 and the city fathers being tight Dutchies, just bricked up the end, which is why that stunning tower is separate from what's left, with a nice square in between? 😛🤣

I think the current consensus between meteorologists and historians is that it was likely a powerful tornado (very rare in the Netherlands) that neatly took out the middle section of the church while leaving the rest standing

Tip for eating a 'kroket'..ask for loads of mustard...first put up some mustard... then take a careful first bite...avoid the filling there cause you burn your tongue...put again first mustard on the filling to cool it and take your second careful bite...etc etc

Fun fact about the Cathedral and Dom Tower. They used to be part of a singular building, however on the 1st of August 1674 the building was torn apart by a tornado, leaving the tower to be sepperated from the main building.

Come to Limburg. There are very few canals, none in the cities but lots of history, especially in Maastricht. Also, you need to eat krokets and fricandellen sparingly. We call them cholesterol bangers. You also do not want to know what they put in frikandellen (free-kahn-dellun). They also sell frikandellen in Germany but those are just meatballs.

At 10:03 you see a litte girl statue before the Saint John's church, that is Anne Frank, she lived a short time in Utrecht, before her family moved to Amsterdam in the 30's.

"There's this tower here, but it was closed" 😂 Arguably THE tower of the Netherlands, the Dom of Utrecht. It's got such a special history. You should go see it anyway, even if you can't climb it 😊

So cool to see you really like the vibe here in the Netherlands. Sometimes we might forget how beautiful it is here, calm, peaceful. And also the rest of Europe has great things. But I every time I am glad I am back on dutch soil again haha. And about being the only tourist, I think there are maybe a lot of tourists in Utrecht, but they may be dutchies too from other parts of the country. I did 3 weeks ago. I live in the north and dont come to the south side so much.

Cool to follow your adventure here in the Netherlands. You visited a lot of places that are in fact older than the country (as a Kingdom (1814)) itself. Utrecht has been an official city (with city rights) since 1122. The Dom church and tower were finished in 1382, which started in 1321.
@embreis22573 ай бұрын
that makes sense. the church was built as a Catholic temple, that's why it looks so grand. Protestants probably would have built it differently
@ArumesYT3 ай бұрын
@@embreis2257 That is true for a lot of churches here, because a lot of them are older than the Protestant movement. Also, a lot of those Catholic churches did get their interiors stripped and repainted (to cover Catholic paintings) by the Protestants - the well-known "beeldenstorm".

Burning your mouth on a kroket is part of the Dutch integration course haha. Nice you're taking the Dutch experience to such a level in such a short time. Great choices for your visits too. Not sure how long you'll be in The Netherlands but if you want another part of our staple food you gotta try both Indonesian and Surinamese food. Surinamese food especially can pack a punch in spice. It's a unique cuisine and together with Indonesian food the most unique food you're gonna find in Europe.
