Not only are winter tires more expensive than summer tires, the rubber compound is also designed for cold weather. In warm weather, they wear out much faster and are also damaged more quickly.

In Germany, using winter tires in snowy or icy conditions is mandatory for safety reasons. Winter tires have a special rubber mix and tread pattern that grip better in cold, slippery weather, helping prevent accidents. Driving with winter tires all year isn’t practical because they wear out faster in warmer temperatures, have longer braking distances on dry roads, and increase fuel consumption. Many German auto shops offer seasonal tire services, including switching tires twice a year and storing the off-season set. This makes it easier for drivers to always have the safest tires for each season.

It's also really easy to do it yourself. I have absolutely no mechanical knowledge about cars and I can do it, if begrudgingly. The car should have a tyre changing kit inside anyway, so all you need is a place to store the unused tyres, some room to do the actual work, and maybe some grease to make sure the nuts don't get stuck when you're trying to take them off half a year later.

Winter tires are made of a different rubber then regular tires. They are meant for temperatures below 8 (?) degrees Celsius. Why not to use them all year round? Above 8 degrees Celsius they will wear down MUCH faster than regular tires. And because winter tires are more expensive it's more economic to have two sets of tires (winter and regular tires)

The reason why almost all Germans learn to drive in a manual vehicle is that if you take the test in an automatic vehicle, you are restricted to automatic vehicles on your driving license. In addition, there are a lot of manual vehicles in use and on the used market, so the proportion of automatic vehicles never became dominant. With electric cars, the issue resolves itself. In the past, automatic cars were less popular because they had higher fuel consumption. The reputation and the sporty aspect probably also contributed to the fact that automatic cars did not gain the same popularity as in the USA. I can also imagine that manual cars allow better control in mountainous regions because you can use the engine as a brake when going downhill.
@Tony66424

They changed that in 2021. If you now have at least 10 lessons driving a manual car you can finish your license in an automatic and be allowed to drive both afterwards

I’ve found a reference that before that change less than 0.1% of new drivers in Germany opted to take their test in an automatic car and thus receive an automatic-only license. Switzerland completely removed any requirements to take lessons or a test in a manual car to get a normal unrestricted driving license in 2019. Within a few years, the picture almost completely shifted, with now about 90% of new drivers opting to take the test in an automatic car. Though some new drivers are voluntarily still taking some lessons in manual cars and only take the test in an automatic car to reduce their chances of failing the test. It should be noted that taking driving exam in an automatic car has barely improved the rate at which new drivers pass the exam, from about 65% to 67%.
@Gaston413
@Gaston413 2 ай бұрын
@@aphextwin5712 I think it's nonsense too. For new drivers, the automatic transmission is a relief and getting used to a manual transmission later only takes a short learning phase. It also doesn't take into account that other vehicles sometimes have completely different controls for many important functions, so that you sometimes have to read the manual before you drive for the first time.

One reason for taking your driving license with a manual car (in Sweden at least, but I think it's the same in many other countries in EU) is that the driving license is conditional. This means that if you do your driving test with an automatic, you get the condition "Automatic" stamped in your driving license and you are not ALLOWED to rent or drive a manual car. So if you take the test with a manual car there is no condition, and you can drive whatever you like.

2:32 That's because in the US your driving licence requirements consist of driving the Sheriff around the block twice or thrice and if you haven't caused a major accident with more than two fatalities in the process you've got your license. In Germany we have to take hours of theoretical lessons followed by a theoretical exam which is then followed by hours of practical lessons including so called "special drives" which are as follows: - Five driving lessons of 45 minutes each on federal or country roads - Four driving lessons of 45 minutes each on the Autobahn - Three driving lessons of 45 minutes each at dusk or darkness (You can combine them though like taking a 45 minute lesson driving on the Autobahn at night you get one lesson of each.) At the end of all that you do a practical driving test of an hour with an independent tester and if your driving instructor touches the paddles even once you'll hear a buzzer and have failed the test on the spot. My driving instructor told me about a guy who did quite poorly on the practical exam and was basically on the edge of failing. He knew he had done badly so once he had returned to the parking lot of the independent tester he banged the car door in frustration after exiting his vehicle and failed his test right then and there because his door banging caused unnecessary noise emissions which you have to avoid and because he had been on the edge of failure already that was the straw that broke the camel's back...

another great plus to having removable shower heads is that you can get larger objects (such as mosquito screens, dogs, or - as I did recently - a large wicker basket) into the tub or shower and get the water to spray and clean where you want it instead of getting in with it at the same time and getting all wet trying to manoeuver the object you want to clean underneath the water that comes from one spot…

Greetings from Germany. Manual/automatic transmission. A little bit of history: as I grew up (1950's) the horsepower of an average car was around 50hp and with manual transmission you had 4 gears. An automatic transm. had a powerloss of 15-25% and only 3 gears. The consequence was that automatic cars were extreme slow and were driven only by old folks and had a bad image. Another reason was the hefty price increase for automatic transmissions.

Biking is generally considered a normal mode of transportation in most European countries whereas it appears that in the US and other countries it's really more viewed as a sports activity. That probably explains a lot. At least whenever I see documentaries it's more about mountain biking, BMX, competitive race cycling our couriers battling the traffic in New York or something like that. the biggest advantages of a manual transmission * vehicle control on snow and ice when you drive on a road with packed snow, at low speed you shift into 4th gear and the car becomes "inert" and reacts slowly, thus preventing tire slippage when you want to slow down you shift into a lower gear and let the engine brake the car, in which case the car's differential acts like ABS without you even pressing the brake * off-road control when you are on a bad road it is easy to decide what speed you will go * overall control if for some reason the transmission breaks down you can always "force" it into neutral and stop the vehicle (the tricks from the movies on a manual transmission don't work)

Just as rule of thumb when you should consider to use winter tires. By law you have to have them in showy/icy conditions. Else not mandatory even if it would make sense as due to the different rubber mixture below 7 degree celsius winter tires give you more grip than summer tires. On the other hand if to warm you loose a lot of control with winter tires as they become too soft and wobbly. If for some reason it would snow in July you need to drive winter tires.

The rubber compound of winter tires is soft(er) to be not so hard at cold temperatures and have more grip to the ground/ice. Additional the tread pattern of winter tires has more fine cuts to bite better into snow. All this plus for winter conditions comes with a minus for dry hot summer conditions: - the softer compounds "pulverizes" in the hot and you can see the tires strip themselfs down in a few thousend miles. - the many cuts in wintertires produces (when the tire gets really hot in the summer) a lot of friction that causes higher gas consumption (up to 1/4 Gallon per 100km) - The soft rubber that gets to soft in summertimes causes that the brakeing distances getting longer - even with ABS - not good to slide into the end of a car because your car needed 10m more room to stop.

All-weather tires don’t grip as well in snow and ice, which could be a safety concern. Plus, they tend to wear down faster in the summer heat because of their softer rubber. I feel like, in the long run, having separate winter and summer tires works better for both safety and cost.

Winter tires are designed to grip into snow and ice (more grooves perpendicular to the driving direction, plus narrow zig-zag grooves on the studs), whereas summer tires are designed to move water out of the way (sweeping grooves so that water is moved outwards as the tire rolls, plus continuous longitudinal grooves for better stability on dry roads).

Winter tyres are generally not more expensive than summer tyres. But they are much softer to provide better grip in the cold and have a special tread pattern to provide good grip on snow. Because they are so soft, they would wear out very fast at normale temps especially in the summer and they do not perform as good as summer tyres on warm days. It's recommended to put winter tyres on when temperatures get below 7°C (44°F) because that's when they begin to outperform summer tyres. All kinds of varieties, which is super helpful if you have muscle pain in your back for instance. Not to mention, it is way more practical to actually clean your bathtub or shower walls. Water pressure I found very weak in most american places I have been to. So even if you might have a weak water pressure in your home, by turning the setting of your shower head to a different stream, you can compensate that.

She must have lived in older homes in NZ. A lot of homes have showers with flexible hose shower heads. There's still a lot of manual cars here too. There are many places in NZ that have snow and icy roads in winter & early spring. Not sure about winter tyres, but snow chains are certainly used. In the town where I live there are a number of oldies riding bikes, and some with trikes too, who are pretty much in their eighties.

5:15 Winter tyres have a stronger grip on the road. Which means they wear off at a faster rate, also the roads are worn off at a faster rate. On the top of that in summer conditions the fabric of the winter tyre get softer which makes the car less responsive to stearing adjustments. The softer material kind of sticks to the road better which leads to higher fuel consumption. That's why, even if it isn't compulsory, in Central Europe everyone with a little bit of sense has a set of summer tyres and a set of winter tyres. If you slip off the road in winter, the first question of the insurance company is if you had summer or winter tyres on. Guess why.

Cars, with hybrid and e-cars it is quickly changing whether manual or not. Personally gave up on manual after too many traffic jams on the autobahn - kills your legs constantly on the clutch. As for winter tyres... They use up more fuel and are actually made with a slightly different rubber that is suited for cold and will wear off much quicker in hot weather.

@4:43 It's not only because they are expensive at all. It's a hazard driving that much softer rubber (rubber stiffens in colder temperatures) when it's not cold. It increases the breaking distance quite a bit. Some roads or zones in cities also BAN dubbed tires (tires with metal stubs in them) Because it severely makes the air around the road worse for breathing. If you want an example of that you have Hornsgatan in Stockholm, Sweden for example where it's banned to drive with dubbed tires on that street. Edit: There are "all weather tires" That work not good, not bad in almost all weathers and climate. Not good on ice though, then you will need the dubbed ones.

Nearly same in Russia There used to be a law that you were required to mark your car if you're driving spiked tires, not sure it's in place now, I've seen some cars on spikes without any sign on a car. I live in a northern part so climate is pretty cold and close to Finland and Sweden, minus the mountains in Norway😂 Also it's pretty humid where I live, so ice is pretty common on the road, so it's probably much safer to use spikes. Many people who only drive in a town or on a highways use non spiked winter tires, because many roads are cleaned using salt or reagents, and people who often go on non-asphalt roads use spiked ones

In many of the Rocky Mountain States there is a requirement to have either snow tires or snow chains available while driving a car between October and April. Moveable shower components are a standard choice these days at many hardware stores, when doing an upgrade in the bath area. Bicycles in Europe are also used as a daily means of transportation and this style of bikes are heavy duty. I have often seen them used when people go shopping on weekends and have a basket attached either to the front or back of the bicycle. And with that form of transportation there is also the option of shopping at the Saturday Open Air Markets. These have been around for centuries as a means of trade.

Winter-/Summer tyres: They are (at least partially) a consequence of the autobahn without speedlimit. A tyre gets deformed while rolling at the bottom. Getting deformed caused heat, The faster it rolls the more heat occurs. Driving at high speeds on a very warm day needs a tyre made of hard rubber or it will suffer wear and tear. Such a hard rubber is not capable to get a good grip on cold roads or even snow. The result is a seperate set of tyres for winter or a "Ganzjahres-Reifen", an all-year-tyre. The latter is but a bit of a Jack-of-all-trades. It has a higher wear in summer than a summer tyre, is a bit louder (due to a snow-optimized profile) and is not as good on snow as a winter tyre. Slow vehicles like trucks (speed limit in Germany 80 kmh ~ 50mph) don't need the harder tyres for the summer, they run the whole year on tyres that are basicly winter tyres.

Winter Tires are engineered to have a rubber mix that allows good adhesion in cold weather. If you would drive them during summer, you would need much more gas. there are „Allwetterreifen“ which can be used all year round but if you live in a area that is known for lots of snow, then you would chose the winter tires. Insurance can refuse to cover damages if you do not have winter or all weather tires during the winter months

Not sure how old the original video is, but I think by now the ratio between manual and automatic transmissions in vehicles has shifted over the last years. I would say in the last decade, automatic transmissions became more common, especially on higher end cars with maybe some safety assistant systems etc.. Some brands like Mercedes even sopped prouction of manual transmissions. Those transmission usually are not the "traditional" automatic transmisson using a torque converter, although those are around as well, even though more modern variants with more gears. A modern gearbo easily has 7 to 8 gears. also double clutch systems that work without a hydraulic torque converter are very common.

Shower heads - At the age of 60 I still remember a time where a bathtub was a luxury item if it had an attached hose with showerhead at all, and yes you had to hold it up yourself. The ultimate luxury became a wall mounted holder fot that head. A shower where you could just stand under, could only be found in fancy hotels or public swimming facilities, but nobody could afford one of those in their house. - Funny, how times can change in a few decades. By the way, I prefer the removable shower head today too.

Winter tires are not just "better tires". Wether studded or studless, their rubber compounds and thread design are completely different. They have to be, to be extra pliable to grip and drain slick snow, ice, slush and water in very cold conditions. The reason you don't run them in summer, is because those rubber compounds become _too_ soft in that heat, so they will wear incredibly quickly. In Norway at least, 1.6mm thread is the legal minimum for _summer_ tires. 3mm for winter, but you should really try to stay at 5mm or more, especially in snow heavy regions (winter tires start with more thread than summers do ofc). It also goes a long way when the thread needs to press and drain a lot of slushy snow-slop out to the sides so the wheel doesn't just float on top of it, losing surface traction completely.

The showerheads have more benefits like being hight adjustable, I love really hot showers (55-60°C) and if the head hangs to high the water cools off so darn quickly but best part is being attached to a hose. For us it´s normal to use the tub/ shower as a cleaning area for bigger objects like fat filters above your stove, bicycles, garbage bins etc and I remove the shower head multiple times per week to have a high pressure hose with warm/ hot water making cleaning certain things a lot easier.

Winter tires are made with a "softer" tire mixture, it's not only the depth of the grapple that defines them. This makes it also mandatory to change them before summer time, because if you drive with winter tires during the hot months the tire will "bake" (thats what we call it in Bulgaria) and will become "harder", making it unusable for winter conditions. The tires "law" and the chaning of them i believe is standart for entire Europe :)

I live in The Netherlands. We have winter tires as well. But they're not mandatory here. Only strongly advised. Personally I don't have winter tires on my car but so called 'All season tires'. Almost just as cheap as regular tires but safe to drive all year around. We do not have had strong winters for years, only mild autumn like winters. So 'all season tires' are safe enough. Winter tires are NOT mandatory in Germany. You can drive all year long with summer or all year tires. However, you have to have winter tires (with alpine symbol) if neccessary. This means that in winter road conditions, i.e. on black ice, snow, slush, ice or frost, you may only drive with winter tires. You don't need winter tires on bikes, commercial vehicles in agriculture and forestry or motorized wheelchairs. That said, winter tires generally aren't more expensive than summer tires. You can get cheap or expensive ones of both types. But usually really cheap ones are not recommended for various reasons. Winter tires are made für lower temperature (7°C and below) and are better on snow, ice and slush. Summer tires are better on a dry and slightly wet roads. It is not recommended to drive winter tires in summer because they wear a lot quicker on warm dry roads and the braking distance is longer.

Winter tires: I'm using "all years" which are allowed in winter. Jack of all trades, master of none. Not as good in warm conditions as summer tires, not as good on snow or wet as winter tires. But living near Cologne we have maybe three or four days a year where real winter tires would REALLY be the better option. If there is a real snowstorm out there (maybe once in 10 years) i'd call in work and just tell that i can't come in.

The difference between winter and summer tires lies in the tire tread! In winter a tire must have more grip on ice and snow - on the other hand, in summer on dry roads this profile would cause greater rolling resistance, which would increase fuel consumption and therefore fuel costs!! Secondly, the rubber composition of both types of tires is different! Summer tires are made of a harder rubber that retains its shape even in hot summer temperatures. In the winter, the cold would cause these tires to become too hard and brittle, which could lead to cracking and eventually bursting! Compared to summer tires, winter tires are made of a softer material, which means they remain soft and elastic even in cold weather. In summer, the heat would cause the tires to become even softer and deform, which would lead to unstable driving behavior, similar to a tire losing air!

Thing is, once you learn to drive with a manual transmission, really learn, it becomes second nature. You do not even think about it, expect when starting from a standstill. Okay, it becomes tricky when you have to start uphill with a dance between clutch, accelerator, and the handbrake. But it feels soo good when you manage that little feat!

The mooveable shower heads will make sense as soon as you're living with someone who's significantly taller or shorter than you. With the shower head hooked on a rod, you just adjust it to the height you're most comfortable with. Also, unhook the shower head and use the hose to reach every corner of the tub or shower stall to rinse off soap residue; saves a lot of time and effort when cleaning, because you don't have to scrub off dried-in soap scum.
