As someone who actually lives in West Virginia, I remember the last guy. My ex-husband bought a ticket for that lottery drawing, and was so irate that a businessman, who was already kind of well off, won it. And then all the bad stuff started happening to him, and it seemed like so many people were against him, and it just made me feel so bad to see people acting like he deserved all this bad luck because he wasn't some poor person that got an unexpected windfall.

California has been a “community property” state for a while, meaning that in the case of marriage, all property/earnings/etc are considered owned by both partners in the marriage, regardless of which one brought that into the relationship. That explains the “malice” aspect of that ruling, since she attempted to forcefully hide and keep the money for herself outside of legal routes such as a court order to do so.

In regards to the tax thing, not sure if it is the same everywhere but lottery winnings are considered an income which is why it is taxed. Basically if you win the lottery you are considered a professional gambler.

Something to keep in mind is that expensive things like a boat and jet are pretty useless once you run out of money. Stuff like that which requires some kind of constant upkeep are going to eventually bleed you dry if your millions are a result of a one-time lottery win and not from a constant source of income.

Going off the point you made saying never tell anyone about you winning, there’s only I think 11 or 12 states that will allow you to remain anonymous about the winnings. Some states will allow you to remain anonymous up to a certain amount also.

It's funny how in the UK, houses cost so much more in the South than they do in the North, because it's the exact opposite in the US. Real estate in the South is way cheaper than it is in the North and on the West Coast.

Not any more. Houses on the South have seen a whopping 25-40% INCREASE in prices. I still cannot afford a house. Even a 2 bedroom house with NO garage costs a staggering $250,000! I think a housing crash will come in the distant future because nobody is trying to stabilize the market. Housing prices are so wild that a neighbor at the end of my cul-de-sac sold his house for over $1 MILLION. He bought it 9 years ago for under $400,000!!
