We get non-GMO layer feed from an Amish guy that is a dealer for a feed company out of Walnut Hill, Ohio. Organic is so crazy expensive 😬 One of our local feed stores also sells non-GMO feed that is a little more expensive than what we're gettin, but still way cheaper than organic. We felt like that was a good compromise.

Thanks for reminding me about the importance of light for egg production. We're going into our second winter with our hens and I've done everything to keep egg production up except add more light to compensate for earlier sunsetting. I'll now be adding more this weekend. Thanks!

Great information! I have had chickens for close to ten years, my kids showed some in 4H and even I learned some great 'nuggets' from your video! BUT- I would also love to see a video on how to build your awesome nest boxes... been battling egg eaters off and on for the last couple years and have tried a few different nest box ideas with no lasting 'luck'. We are just starting out our homestead and you guys give some really excellent tips here and there that I find really helpful, thank you for sharing here!

Best of luck with the egg eaters. That's a really tough situation to solve. The roll away nest boxes work great but don't completely alleviate the problem. Make sure the nests are well-padded and clean. If the eggs crack at all, the chickens are much more likely to eat them.

Great tips! I like the idea of buying ready-to-lay pullets. The local stores only ever have chicks. Would we have to order the pullets from a farmer?

Most hatcheries will sell ready to lay pullets.. they often cost a lot to ship, so finding something local would be best. Craigslist or Facebook can be an option, but just make sure you’re gettin from somebody that knows what they’re doin.. I got some through Craigslist one time that never laid well.

Hi Codi, thanks for these helpful tips and ideas to raise better Egg laying chickens. When you had that cold spell you must have had to replenish their water often as it would freeze pretty quick. I guess with all chickens together it would generate some heat which would help.

I got like a faux leather, but it could be about anything. I’ve used regular cloth in the past. I’ve never washed mine 😊
