I just love your channel so much; it's new and interesting content, well-presented. I've learned from and implemented several things from y'all; did an at-home cow pregnancy test (she's pregnant!), am planting popcorn this year, routinely make your chocolate milk, and did the molasses water post-calving thing. When you've got 500,000 subscribers I'll be able to say I was in the 1st 500 😀. Love the family ice cream blip at the end. We're putting in a raspberry trellis this week and following your tutorial from last year (anything you'd change before we embark on that project?). Maybe grapes next year!

Wow, thank you so much Marie! I teared up a little reading that.. so good to know we’re making a difference 😊 Congrats on the cow pregnancy! Such a good feeling. So I did change a couple things.. I lowered the top wire a foot, and I added another set of wires in between the top and bottom sets. We had some plants still not reaching the top even after lowering it. I made the middle set wider than the top. I moved the wire down in this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYTJf3uXpduJkNU I don’t think the added wire made it into a video. I’m gonna till beside the plants soon so I could put it in a video within the next few weeks. It’s easy to add after you build the original structure. Good luck!

@morethanfarmers
@morethanfarmers Жыл бұрын
We had an inner battle about that.. we don’t like using plastic. BUT cardboard is held together with glue that I don’t want in our soil and the weeds still come up through. So at least instead of going with a thin plastic that has to be replaced every year, we went with a weed cloth that should last several.

We just planted three colors of grapes together--I didn't think about cross-pollination. I bought them as a set from the Indiana Berry Company though--so hopefully they wouldn't sell them like that if it were a problem. Your trellis looks great. We've decided to do a high arbor to put a table under. I think they theoretically may not be as productive in that setup, but I really like the (theoretically in the future) aesthetic of it!
@morethanfarmers

Cross pollination is not an issue when growing your grapes. A green seedless will remain green seedless, a blue concord will be a blue concord. If your trying to make seed production for sale then yes you don’t want cross pollination but just to grow and eat cross pollination creates a more abundant crop as the difference triggers a healthy fruiting response. If you grow 3 varieties of grapes beside each other the fruit of each variety will look and taste as its variety is meant to be,.. its the seeds that get different. Your parents didnt change just because they “cross pollinated” with each other its just you (their seed) that came out a unique blend of both your parents. Make sense?
@berniesat
@berniesat 11 ай бұрын
Unless you're planning on planting the seeds, you don't have to worry about cross pollination. You actually want them to cross pollinate. You'll get more fruit.

With post in the ground I see so many use a gas torch to preserve the wood that goes in the ground, and that works I think, but there is another way to protect rot with wood in the ground It turns out the the wood rots where it comes in contact with air, moisture, and dirt . Below the ground where oxygen does not come in contact, does not rot. So, if you put a rubber roofing that is used at the edge of a roof to prevent water from rotting the sheeting is a great product to wrap around the post and prevent rotting .

Found your channel, super entertaining, educational and interesting! Your family is adorable and I'm jealous you get to do all of this, because i'm in suburbia'ish, close to the outskirts of town. I know you're great at researching your ideas. From my own experience and my father's knowledge in grape growing I learned that there's a difference in grapes for juice/wine and grapes for the table. Table grapes should not be planted in the same vineyard as juice grapes. You want to plant seeded grapes separate from seedless grapes. Or they will cross pollinate and the seedless will grow seeds. once this happens no matter what, you can't change the vine back to a seedless vine. If all your grapes are for juice and jelly it won't matter since the juice will he separated from the rest of the grape. Hope this helps. Love your vids...so proud of you two! Keep up the great. Happy family life❤ God bless and keep yiucall! Candy in SC PS **course idea* "How you make a homestead wishboard" on the computer

Ok great energy young man if the farm! After you cut your 16' posts go get you some ground contact 2 x 4s and have extensions of 2 x 4snailed or screwed in the length of like 3 ir 4 feet then plant em whatever distance deep you like. I like 48 inches cuz here in michigan: GO BLUE!!! OUR FROSTLINE IS 48 INCHES! I LIKE DIGGING WITH MY POSTHOLE DIGGERS SO I CAN PUT DOWN GALF bagof gravel then thriw in some crushed rock or brick keeping it level then put a bag if cement next to my hole and yse a shivel to nip off the vag and use my hose and just flood it with water a bit then have the bag cement flood the hole slow then water it till its about a inch below the surface and get a 1inch by one inch stick and jab the hole while its getting sprayed and poke out the hole filling it up with cement to the top . All the time keeping a shirt level on ut to level it up pretty much. Let it sit a hour and done. Lots of energy for a good cause. Love your life on the farm and crew loves you too❤😂🎉 they all are keepers!!! Great job! God bless! Enjoyit if ya all keep uploading instructional stuff like this as its quite inspirational!! A++❤😂🎉

it's generally considered safe to use pressure-treated wood for a grape trellis, even if you're growing grapes for eating. The main concern with pressure-treated wood is that it contains a chemical called chromated copper arsenate (CCA), which is used to prevent the wood from rotting. While CCA does contain arsenic, which is a toxic substance, the amount of arsenic that leaches out of the wood is very low and not considered a significant health risk. Now used railroad ties is another matter. They are treated with creosote that is a carcinogen an dangerous to ingest.

I dont see the issue with cross pollination, which i believe they will do so. Cross pollination usually creates a more abundant crop. If your looking to get pure variety seed to plant or sell then its an issue but for your purposes you can clone the plant by taking cuttings or air layering the vines. That will make new plants for future use. As it is cross pollination is not an issue to be worried about.

Good video, with the bride and young 'uns in it and all--very entertaining--but everyone goes horizontal while I go vertical. This is especially important for people who don't have much space and want a solid, _really_ cool-looking trellis for just one or two plants that will last decades. I designed such a trellis and would be happy to share it. Parts are less than $200 at Home Depot. Reach out to me via the breadcrumbs below for drawings and parts list. P.S.
