Thanks for being begging brave enough to share your story, Morgan. We all learn from each other's experiences. And, like I've said before, even the most prepared people run into trouble sometimes. Some people feel like they know all there is to know want to given subject, but I know I'm constantly learning new stuff. I hope like you, my viewers are too.

I visited @empty plenty’s channel and he has declined my invitation to show us how to do this series of trails in two hours because it’s too far away and he’s too busy being a badass...but I do give him props for overcoming addiction even though it seems like his recovery journey isn’t quite finished since he’s projecting his drug&alcohol issues onto strangers on the interwebs...

Love survival stories!! I love to hike, but always easy stuff. So i dont think id ever find myself in a scary situation, but ya never know. I just like to listen, and imagine what i would've done. For example: I found it interesting that when his shivering got out of control, hallucinations started, thats when he decided to find a place to lay down and rest. I would've provided forced myself to exert myself more in an attempt to warm up. In my head that sounds like the right choice, but in reality It seems his choice was best - he found a rock he could kinda lay under in like a fetal position, all tucked in, conserving what heat he could get his body to make. Im a nurse, and hearing what his temp was at the hospital, which means he was even lower out where they found him - blew my mind. Hes very, very lucky to have survived. A lot of ppl dont realize you can die from hypothermia even if temps are above freezing. Ppl have died of hypothermia in 50 and 60 degree weather. My elderly neighbor (i live in the country so this was a few miles away) locked herself out of her house and she was found deceased. Died of hypothermia. I wish she had just broken a window to get in, but ppl dont realize that Temps in the 50s and 60s can be just as deadly, and ppl dont usually understand just how quickly cognitive functions are lost and then your incapable of making good decisions. 😔 Im glad he had a happy ending!!

People always think it’s easy to break a window pane. Based on the experience of 2 different instances, it is not. In both instances, I had a hammer and not just a rock other improvised tool. The first time, I was locked out of a house I was house sitting and no one had a spare key. It took 15 full body blows with a heavy hammer before the 15” x 10” glass pane broke. The second time, I was locked out of my own home and I gave up after about 20 blows. The glass crazed but did not break. In the end, I jimmied the back door.

Wow really lucky in terms of his overall significant injuries not to mention his luck in being found; one more day and he would have died. It’s amazing to me that he was able to get through the hypothermia stages and knowing to stop and sleep in a dry place. Lots of people in stage 1 don’t even realize what’s happening. I think what happened to Mr. Morgan, happens to a lot of day hikers in terms of assuming all will be well and not bringing equipment and gear for an overnight stay in less than desirable conditions. Most people don’t have this kind of appalling experience and eventually get back on trail or run into others and learn from the bad experience. I don’t think experienced hikers or armchair hikers should be so critical of the decisions of inexperienced hikers; everyone starts somewhere and is a beginner at some point. We ALL make mistakes and generally we’re lucky and get away with it. For me in addition to carrying the 10 essentials plus other survival gear, my biggest thing is keeping friends and family informed of my plans, any changes thereto, a paper map and a compass. Don’t ever rely on a phone GPS, you can download .PDFs on Avenza maps to use offline, but again, if your phone dies, you’re in trouble. I’m glad he survived his ordeal and I hope it hasn’t put him off hiking and camping. I 💕 how he refers to this as a Wilderness Adventure.

Yeah just checking in on social media from the trailhead could’ve been a game changer, and a portable charger definitely would’ve been, friends have told me about those apps since this happened and I’ll check them out if I ever decide to do any intentional deep woods stuff...but again, I wasn’t trying to be Backwoods Billy and Google maps was doing a decent job of keeping me where the trail was supposed to be for the most part...until my phone died...this definitely hasn’t turned me off of the outdoors and I’m planning to go back with a better pack soon...

He says don't take more than you need but you should never assume everything is going to go as you planned it likely would have been better for him if he had taken a small tent and a sleeping bag and why didn't he ever light a fire
