I really appreciate that you did this test. I was able to learn while lying under my electric blanket.

They now make a breathable version of this so that type might work with a good bed of pine needles and a wind block or fire under freezing temperatures.

Thank you Nikia for the informative video. I would have never thought about condensation in a bag like that! 🙂

I'm wondering if with the tarp you wouldn't/couldn't make a pup tent, dig a shallow pit inside, heat up a rock or 2 in your fire then put the heated rocks in the pit, and put the dirt back. That might both keep you warm and dry up the condensation. Might free up your coat as well to make into a makeshift door.

Aloha Nikia! Those views are quite a treat! Don't blame you for not wanting to venture out into the wild alone, as even here in Hawaii, it gets really cold at Upper elevations, and we have people go missing every year (sadly). Those Canada Geese look very much like our State Bird the Nene Goose.

Thanks for the review, Nikia! I’ve always wondered how good those were.

Great video, but some reviewers are suggesting using the bivy sack as an outside lining to your sleeping bag--i.e., you go inside the sleeping bag, the sleeping bag goes inside the the bivy sack...does that make sense, or should you just use it as a blanket over the sleeping bag (or perhaps as an additional ground covering)? To confuse things further, some bivy sacks are being marketed as "breathable"...any info would be appreciated...George, Canada...

What essentials should a hiker bring in their backpack to increase chances of survival? Thanks.
@RatandCat3 жыл бұрын
Before you go, know the area, look at maps and weather. Let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. Don't go alone. Go with someone you trust and that is reliable and also is prepared for the outdoors. If you are inexperienced, make sure you go with someone who is experienced. Make sure to take maps with you and a compass. Take a GPS and satellite emergency beacon and know how to use them before you go, Shelter, food, knife, cooking utensils, water, water purifier, fire starting kit and know how to start a fire, and 3 to 4 layers of clothes- enough to deal with the extreme temps for the season in your area and altitude, a good sleeping bag, and shelter. If you are just hiking just taking an emergency blanket rather than a tent and sleeping bag, and try to skip a camp stove and eating utensils. Take enough food to last 24 hours or more beyond your intended stay.

those goosies are so funny. :) in a way, it was good they were there, because then you had a least a little company (albeit even if it was hissy, standoffish and squawky company. LOL) also, at 17:17 it looks like a turtle! you had him there with you also! :)

btw I think I know that island; have been by it many times. Didn't know it has a camping spot on it! Surprised there isn't any snow up there yet!

Glad to see you again. Very good video. I enjoyed the geese. Glad you shared this experience and showed the things you tried to make the night survivable. Knowing these things to try could make a big difference in someone surviving the night. Your "good to know" review of the product was spot on.

I know some European countries won't allow the so called emergency blankets ect to be sold in there countries because of the miss representation of the products.
