You are right. The media went absolute batshit crazy with the amount of coverage in this story. I think I heard more about this story in the span of 3 days then I heard about Babcock in like 2 weeks.

The NHL's decision regarding the length of the suspension essentially boils down to "No, getting your feefees hurt is not a valid justification, and that the unwritten 'code' isn't real and should not be used as a metric to influence decisions" See the Battle of Alberta 2020 where Tkachuk taking several dangerous runs at Kassian was not justification for Kassian attempting to beat an unwilling Tkachuk to a pulp.

To be fair, many of the comparisons used were while play was ongoing or players were engaged. In THIS case, the play was dead as soon as the puck went in the net. Riley’s hit was premeditated, not part of a scrimmage nor an attempt for positioning. The light went on, the whistle was blown , heck I think the horn even blew and Grieg was heading back to his bench to celebrate. Was Grieg’s shot a sign of good sportsmanship? No. But Riley’s response was more than an opportunistic jab or a hard hit during play. He wanted to teach a lesson but was undisciplined and hot headed.

If you want to base your argument on hits after the whistle, then the closest comparison is Perron. Given that Perron got the wrong guy, hit a completely unsuspecting opponent, and got 6 games. 5 games seems fine for Rielly.

We need a helicopter view of Morgan arriving in NY. Yes the inconsistency is what does it. I think 5 is fine to protect the players, but then just make sure to do this league wide. I also think was it Dillon got 3, was 1 more than we'd normally see. Just keep it up

I like Tavares, but Morgan Rielly should be Captain. This decision is nonsense, because it's inconsistent. I would say that hit is a 2 games MAX suspension if that. He was passionately angry, and I'm sure Morgan regret the decision. It was the heat in the moment. Better to drop the gloves. Reilly NEVER meant to hurt the rookie of course.

Agree 100% Andrew. Now give Morgan the 'C' he deserves and let's move on already. We did fine without Rielly for a few games last season, we'll be fine a few games without him again.

A subsequent appeal right to a neutral arbitrator will be available for suspensions of six (6) or more games.” They gave him five so he doesn’t have the ability to use a neutral arbitrator lol

I have said it before and I'll say it again they use the leafs as an example to the league. Their punishments will always be longer. I'm not saying they don't deserve games but even Matthews got suspensions the other ones only got fines. It's always been like this.

Reilly is the furthest thing from a dirty player but his emotions got the better of him here. The loser Ottawa player who took the slap shot on the empty net deserved a shove not a cross check to the head or otherwise. 5 games seems fair even though I feel Morgan was attempting a shoulder cross check

I would have preferred a stone cold stunner but a cross check will do. It’s just the deranged leaf haters frothing out their mouths in a triggered frenzy that annoys me most. The funniest part is how they accuse Leafs nation of crying, when they are in fact crying for more games! 😅

There is no unwritten rule about how you can score, nonsense, and Rielly's intent to injure is woefully egregious. You've lost sight of what matters. Five games is way too light.

I gave examples. 5 is too much. And yes there is an unwritten rule. It’s called respect for the opponent. If NHL players are saying its a thing, then it is. What locker room have you been in?
