I picked up an 1890, New Orleans mint, Morgan dollar yesterday. It’s not in the best shape, but it’s just cool to me. I know some people collect to eventually sell, but I still love having moments where I take my silver out and just look at it and be proud of what I have.

That’s awesome. If you enjoy it, buy what you can afford and have fun. I like to imagine what heavily circulated Morgan’s could’ve seen? How much bourbon was bought in a saloon or was it part of a horse trade? Could Jesse James or an outlaw had it in his pocket? How about Wyatt Earp? That was such a historically rich time period, the possibilities are endless.

My mother won $80 on a slot machine pull in Las Vegas in 1960. My brother would clear out the kitchen cupboard and pull a drawer out. Then he put a cardboard tube through the hole and we lined up to play slot machine. I’m 70 now and can remember the great fun we had. Eventually, a cleaning lady stole them. But fond memories endure.

Don't let George Morgan's "Assistant" in his title fool you. He had a huge reputation in Britain at that point. We called him over here to make a proper silver dollar design and he said sure, I can do that. He couldn't just step off the boat and take over the Mint. He wasn't the highest manager obviously but he was essential and irreplaceable to the Morgan's creation. Not the most valuable US coin by a long shot, but I think it's one of the most beautiful coins of all time anywhere in the world. It's super popular with collectors and a true American classic!

Morgan 1881S: my grandmother gave me one in about 1960. It is dark/tarnished as I'm sure it was used in commerce and wound up in her purse and eventually was saved and offered to me among a handful of similar coins. It was the oldest one, so I chose it. Coins can encourage kids to do research. I discovered that 1881 was the year Billy the Kid was shot/killed (or so the story goes), not far from where I lived almost 80 years later in southern New Mexico. I still have the coin. I'll have to write up something about it in the event I can pass it along to my grand nieces 😊

Oh, last month I bought some Morgans, pretty much cull, their choice, from Apmex, and they were... okay, I guess. The price was low, and I just want them for barter in the future as they will be recognizable. Oh, and delivery speed was super fast as Apmex is in Oklahoma City, one time zone downhill from me. YMMV. (also, my LCS is better 😉

Another excellent video. Thanks! The Morgan is a beautiful coin for sure. I don't really collect them, but I have a NGC graded AU58 common date with good eye appeal just because I wanted a nice example to look at. Same for the Peace dollar. As far as stacking them for their silver value, I think that it makes more sense, if you want to stack constitutional ("junk") silver to stick with halves, quarters, and dimes. The Morgans just have too high a premium. That is unless you can get them for a great deal. A quick check of JM Bullion as I type this reveals that I can purchase a roll of twenty 1921 Morgans in VG+ condition for $396. On the other hand, I could purchase a roll of twenty generic (buffalo, sunshine, or whatever) silver rounds for $345 (free shipping on either order). The roll of Morgans will contain 15.5 troy oz of silver, while the roll of rounds will contain 20 oz.

$15 cull would be a dream here in 2022. I grabbed a bunch last year for around $24 and actually started the Dansco album with the idea of upgrading any culls that are too slick. I have gathered 74 unique ones but still have many pricey ones left to add. It’s a passion project that will take some time and I’m hoping to do some trades to keep the final costs down. 1893-S may never make it in the album. 😂

Good video however I must make a correction to what you said about the portrait of Liberty. In your format you said that portrait was the same as the Statue of Liberty, however that statue was not even completed and given to the US government until 1886. The portrait on the Morgan Dollar was from an actual model that's mr. Morgan hired for posing. She was a school teacher and these first portraitures were done around the year 1877 so as you see they could not be the same portrait as on the Statue of Liberty. FYI 😊
