If you have a circulated Morgan or Peace dollar that you can hold in your hand, and know that it's authentic, you can hold it in your hand on a regular basis and get used to the weight of it. You'll be able to spot the light ones without any difficulty by simply picking them up and can thus dispense with using a scale. If it's the right weight or even heavier but is a fake, it will be considerably thicker than a real dollar. This is helpful if you're looking at a big lot of circulated dollars.

Last week I threw out three nickels from my late grandfather's collection I thought to be counterfeit. By using your techniques and looking at how poor certain areas were struck, it was easy to see that the buffalos on them were actually missing one of their front legs! To think he had them since the late thirties and never knew.

A great deal of data exists for every Morgan ever minted. Reed edge counts are different for many of the Morgans so if it supposed to have significant Numismatic value, then counting those reed edges and looking up the recorded data and comparing is a good move.

What about the magnet test? And the Ping test? There are now a couple of apps for testing various precious metals by the Ping sound. And if you put the coin in a thin plastic sleeve and let a powerful tiny magnet slide down it on a 45° angle….the magnet should slow going over a real Morgan.

The weight disparity is key, but imho the wear differences are only slight, and too vague to be determining factors. Also, the "weird graininess" doesn't come across in the video - may in person, but not in the video. The dates aren't "off" enough to be a sole determining factor, either. Imho, it all comes down to the weight. Would have been nice if you told us what metal the fakes are made out of? Can't be 90% Silver, or it wouldn't be profitable enough to justify the effort. Are they Nickel, Zinc, or ???

My friend who has been in coin business for years passed on to me. He has no idea. I never did like the color on it. If you have a real Morgan dollar and others that are suspected fakes, the following may help. I had a good one (purchased 30+ years ago for $15) and three fakes (bought recently for $1 each). I mixed them up recently and could not figure out which was the real one. I wanted to weigh them but had no weighing machine. So, I put them one-at-a-time exactly at the end of a wooden ruler and then slid the ruler out over the edge of a book until the coin tipped the ruler down to my desk, noting the reading on the ruler's edge when that happened. The three fakes all tipped at one reading on the ruler's edge, the real one tipped much sooner because it was notably heavier. I found my real one!

On yours another thing I noticed the date looks more like 19 01 than 1901 the spacing of the numbers looks just off. And it sure does look cast rather than struck. If counterfeiters ever figure out how to cast a 27g planchet then using a hammer, anvil or vice to stamp out their fakes we're screwed lol.
@michaelguilas4057 Жыл бұрын
It depends how the coin was used. If you have a scratch mark on your face it doesn’t mean you should have scratch mark all over your body with the same deep and sizes. It is not perfect every time , that is why there are coin errors. You can see clearly that the coin was used a lot of times just like the other coins it went into different hands and without complaining until now there is you saying it is useless. If you believe that coin is fake why don’t you throw it away or destroy it and show it on you tube.

Maybe that's just me and my eyesight or just the way you held them both but all the way through I was trying to see if it was just me and to me it's consistent all the way through the video. The fake one has some black points on it, I saw in another video that this also comes from pouring the coin instead of real minting. Is that a true red flag indicator?
@ModernMiner44 жыл бұрын
It definitely could be. While a real dollar may have similar issues (you never know where it's been), black spots like that are not typical. Poured coins can often be identified by their grainy surface texture, and by random pinholes on the surface.

All of the videos show how test check/test them outside of a 2x2. Mist I come in contact with are still in them. How do I check other than magnet?
@ModernMiner44 жыл бұрын
For a coin in a 2x2, that can be tricky. However, the best way is to learn to identify them visually. Not all fake silver dollars are obvious to the eye, but many examples can be easily spotted. Try searching for silver dollars on eBay and picking out ones that look fake (or even ones that are sold as copies). Figure out why they look fake, and keep those factors in your mental toolbox. An example is that some will have brass color showing through the silver plating. Otherwise, if you're looking at a coin that is for sale, perhaps in a coin shop or at a coin show, ask to see it outside of the 2x2. If it helps them sell it, it would be ridiculous not to do it. I hope this helps, let me know if there's anything I can clarify.
