I had a few of these (two uncirculated 1883's) back in the 1970's. When silver prices skyrocketed in 1980 my brother took them and sold them to put gas in his car! I just started buying a few to remind me of a time when America meant something.

Hi there, just started collecting, especially silver dollars, but know absolutely nothing about coins. I pulled out some of my Morgan silver dollars from 1885-1901 and followed along with you. Unfortunately, mostly Philadelphia, SF & New Orleans. No Carsons so far, but have more more stashed away, hope to find something really rare, but mainly just having fun listening and learning from you. Many thanks

In all of my years of metal detecting I have never found a silver dollar or a single gold coin! I've found many silver dimes and quarters, and maybe a couple half dollars. I'm convinced that people just never lost silver dollars very often and children probably never played with them because that was a lot of money back in those days.

I've got a bunch of these I inherited. The best looking one I found was a 1887 S. It's in very good condition still. Very very light signs of wear, but it so shiney and doesn't seem to have changed color like all the other ones I i have.
@bigc716
@bigc716 6 жыл бұрын
Dante Guerra i would be skeptical about that really shiny one. These coins are all over 100 years old and unless it's in a capsule It would seem like someone tried to clean it. Cleaning a coin will Destroy its value and most likely you'll have to sell it at melt value. of course it might not be but if you take it to a shop that's the first thing thats going to catch their eye.
@FG-lq4pz

cj Miller hi there! Thanks for the response. I'm fairly niave when it come to coins. The Morgan's I have are not in a hard plastic protector, rather that cardboard and plastic deal (don't know what that is called). I've always known about these coins, but the box I undeartherd the other day has not seen the light of day since probably 1955. I was planning on selling the higher ticket ones, but I also plan on keeping the majority of them because I've recently started started stacking silver... Any advice as to how to get them gradded/appraised? I'm hesitant to take them to the local guy in town because the Google reviews all say he's quite the fraudster.
@bigc716
@bigc716 6 жыл бұрын
Dante Guerra I'm pretty muxh a beginner myself bud. I'd suggest checking online to see if you have any rare dates. If you do find some valuable ones you can send them in to PCGS of NGC to get them professionally graded. Not sure how much that costs though. But good luck bud. I wish you the best.

I collect coins. Overall, my favorites are the Walking Liberty Halves, Winged Liberty, (Mercury Dime), and the Silver Eagle, designs by Adolph Weinman. That being said, my favorite coin I have is a 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar w Beautiful Toning on the Reverse. I bought it for $25 from a coin shop. The Numismatist at the shop said it would grade AU. I sent it to PGCS and they graded it AU58. I have many coins that are worth far more, yet that is my favorite coin!

I don't have any of the rare or more valuable ones, but I do have the 1878-P (8 tail feathers), 1889-O and 1921-D. Those cost me enough, the rarer ones cost a lot more to own. Three examples is enough for me. The way I look at it is I have the original design, the regular design and the last re-created design dates.

One comment on rarity: the mintage number can be an initial clue...but it's important to never use that as a factor in your conclusions on (rarity/value). Why? Because, in addition to mintage...other factors can easily overwhelm the mintage number, in determining value/absolute rarity. How so? Two biggies (for affecting rarity, way beyond mintage): What percentage of the coins were released (by the mint) in the year they were minted? They may have held onto them for decades, before release...meaning even a low mintage could have low value, as many examples may exist. Another: How many were melted down? Huge...as there were three MAJOR silver melts (affecting Morgans) in the last 100 years or so: The Pittman Act of 1918, WW11, and the silver price spike of 1980. These all resulted in Morgans being melted. Here's a shocking example: the Morgan, 1886 (O). Over 10.7 MILLION WERE MINTED! So you'd think it's just a common date...BUT NO; IT'S ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE MORGANS OUT THERE, AS EVEN A(REALLY UGLY, BEAT UP, BAG-MARKED MS 60 EXAMPLE, WILL FETCH AROUND $700 TO 900 usd. And one that is MS 65...will be worth over $100,000. So...obviously, all or nearly all were released in the 1880's late, and likely most were melted down...as you just don't see many. Thanks for the video.

Very informative. What is toning, and can you clean discolored coins without damaging them? Thanks
@ModernMiner4
@ModernMiner4 4 жыл бұрын
Toning is what you'd consider "tarnish" on other silver items. It happens when silver comes in close proximity to sulfur. It can be very nice and colorful, or dark and ugly, or anywhere in between. If pretty enough, it can significantly increase the value of a coin. No, I would not recommend cleaning coins. That should be left to professionals.

Thank you for posting the information you did. I am not a collector in any way, however I came across letters, in my house in Italy which was built by my great grandmother during WWII....and I found a bunch of coinage, mostly Kennedy Half Dollars from the early 60's. However, I also found in a letter from my great grandfather to my great grandmother, as he went back and forth to the USA, beginning in the 1880's, a Morgan (I hope) Dollar, 1894, with no stamp, so per your info, Philly, and though it is not shiny and sparkly, it has never been in circulation so it simply appears a tad old. I have read to never clean them so it is, after 100+ years, aged but never been touched, until me and I am handling it like it is porcelain. I want to sell it and have seen them online being sold from 7000 Euros to much less. I have no idea as to its worth but as I am not a collector and I am not keeping it for sentiment's sake and it was simply something I found in a letter (though the letter from my great grandfather to his wife was incredibly emotional, especially given times)....and I would like to sell it. As is. Any advice, please? I would be grateful for any advice given the times we are in and in Italy, where I live, now, things are simply getting more stressful, financially. Anyway, any info you could share would be greatly appreciated. - Gary

Hi Gary, thanks for the comment. If you'd like, you could email me pictures of the coin at modernminer4@gmail.com. Since that would be an extremely rare date, I'd be interested in looking at it.

I picked up a 1881cc in an old coin purse at a yard sale, from what I can tell from comparisons online it looks to be a vf to au type of condition (myself looking thru a 4x loop).....I know without looking it's extremely hard to say, but what would the range of value be ?. And also is it worth being graded ?......love your vids and straight to the point approach, will be subscribing after I type this. Thanks

Price guides are great for comparing coins based on what's more valuable and what's not. Otherwise, I don't trust them. They cannot give real-time prices based on the most recent sales. That being said, VF-AU is a fairly broad range. There is also EF (XF) in between them, so let's say your coin is roughly EF. Coins in this grade range MAY realize prices stretching above $300. But the market fluctuates so much that it's hard to judge a coin sight-unseen. Your best bet is to research coins in that grade range that have sold. When doing so, some factors to keep in mind are damage, whether the coin's been cleaned or dipped, lighting and clarity (in the pictures of the sold coin), presence of dirt or other contaminants, and whether the coin has been professionally graded. Again, everything depends on the coin. I hope this helps. Thanks for subscribing!

Is there an acceptable weight variation for Morgan dollars on either side of the standard 26.73g?
@ModernMiner4
@ModernMiner4 5 жыл бұрын
Based on what I've found, 26.73 grams +/- .097 grams. For grains, 412.5 grains +/- 1.5 grains. Although, examples with wear may be different. Hope this helps!

Sorry for the late reply. The best way to get the highest price for your coin is on eBay. I can't tell you the value, but I can suggest that you compare it to examples on eBay that have sold.

I'd suggest a coin shop or perhaps eBay. Just make sure the coins are real first.

Do you suggest cleaning these? If so, what would you use to do so?
@ModernMiner4
@ModernMiner4 6 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend it unless you know exactly how to do it. Cleaning coins can devalue them significantly. Otherwise, I'm not sure the proper method for cleaning if there is one.

I have a 1893 cc and a 1895 cc morgan silver dollar in perfect conditions would these be worth anyting?
@ModernMiner4
@ModernMiner4 5 жыл бұрын
Well, unfortunately the 1895-CC is not real. Those were never made. If the 1893-CC is real, I'd recommend comparing it to examples on eBay that have sold.
